OT: King Felix trade after this season?

Post#1 » by rarefind » Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:12 pm

As per wiretap, looks like Felix Hernandez may be on the trading block since the Mariners might not be a winning team for a long time to come.

Is this the guy that we sell some of the farm to get and lock up long term? obviously power pitchers have their risks but felix is VERY young. Mind you, rumour has it that the Yankees will make a strong push for his services. The Yankees getting King Felix would be a disaster, even if the MLB expands playoff contention. As long as we don't touch Aaron Sanchez I do this with little remorse even though it'd cost us easily Drabek and Snider for starters or their equivalent.

Why would you make any prospect untouchable in trading for a player of that caliber? We saw how teams did that with Halladay and now they look stupid. F-Her is way younger and he is a consensus top 3 pitcher who doesn't have injury issues either. I'd give Seattle pretty much whatever they want. In fact, Sanchez would be a great guy to include because assuming he has a good year, he'd have the stats to back up his already high prospect pedigree, making him a legit top pitching prospect, yet he'd also be young enough that the still present risk of him failing would make trading him easier for us to stomach. Seattle has a pretty decent farm system all around but they badly need a catcher of the future so I wouldn't mind including JPA. I would make pretty much everyone else on the 40 man roster available too. It's King Felix we're talking about here and we'd get to instantly add an ace in his prime to our team right when we're starting to contend.

Does Sanchez + D'Arnaud or JPA + Thames come anywhere close? We are blocking Thames and don't need both of our catchers so who better to use them on then one of the best pitchers in baseball?

Felix
Romero
Drabek
Morrow
Cecil/Stewart

That's right filthy

I agree with the above with the caveat that we not call him "F-Her".

I don't think you'd have to strip the farm system completely bare though. Maybe some combination of a Catching prospect (D'Arnaud? JPA? I kind of like Perez and even though he's the furthest away, I would say he's the most valuable) + Pitching prospect (Sanchez? Stewart?) + one other hitting prospect and maybe a fringe prospect to top it off.

that's not gonna get it done. I'd say atleast Snider or Drabek, Stewart, D'Arnaud or Perez and a low minors flier like Kellen Sweeney or Marcus Knecht.

Sign Fielder, CJ Wilson and Kelly Johnson if Hill doesn't come around and you got a legit contender with a staff like

Felix
Romero
Morrow
CJ Wilson
Cecil

With Felix on board and the Yankees and Red Sox likely out of the bidding, it would be really interesting to see if Prince would come here. Too bad none of this will ever happen though.....

Not even close. Probably something like Drabek + Snider + Sanchez + d'Arnaud...and quite possibly more.

I know Felix is amazing, but that's much a better package than what the Phillies got for Halladay?

I understand that he would generate a bigger return than what the Jays got for Halladay (considering he's younger and has a higher potential ceiling), but that seems almost excessive, depending on what your definition of "quite possibly more" is.

Hernandez is seven years younger than Halladay was at the time of the trade, and he's under contract for three more years (whereas Doc was entering his walk year). They should get a much better package than we got for Roy.

Are there even other teams that have the prospects to match that kind of offer? I understand that KC and Tampa can but they aren't teams that're gonna be pursuing King Felix. Maybe we could withhold one of Snider or Drabek and give up someone in the minors instead. What's the best offer the Yankees could do?

Depending on the type of season Snider has, he could either be the marquee player with Seattle connections or a scenery change candidate with Seattle connections.

The Yankees could offer Montero, Banuelos, Brackman and Romine without blinking. Montero is one special hitter, Banuelos has ace potential, Brackman could be a #3 guy and Romine could become a everyday catcher. If push comes to shove, the Yankees won;t hesitate to include Betances and even Gary Sanchez to get the man they want.

Angels have some players that they could work with as well, like Trout, Conger, Trumbo, Chatwood, Walden and Segura. (Though I imagine it would cost a lot more for the Mariners to trade him away to the Angels)

Not sure if I'm right here, but was the Halladay trade contingent on Halladay accepting an extension with the Phillies?

Yes, the age difference is the only thing I see, however I still feel that's a bit much. JMO.

still would be hesitant to part with sanchez, if philly could hold out on gose in the halladay deal pretty sure we can hold back on sanchez if we are including other assets. mel queen's initial report on sanchez has me thinking that he could one day be as dominant as felix himself.

ultimately, if it is a deal breaker you do it; but it'd be one of those trades where you feel a bit guilty. next, i think from an a.l. east perspective alone you need to make this deal to keep the former cy young winner out of the division. the possibility of having to face him 4 or 5 times in a season would be terrible at the very least.

would end up being something like drabek, snider (lawrie perhaps), perez or d'arnaud, stewart

And possibly Slade Heathcott, who is off to a monstrous start in the Sally. To get him, we'd probably have to be prepared to offer an ungodly return.

If we got Felix, I think we could make a good run for Fielder.

Anyways, if we could make out with not giving up Morrow/Drabek/Romero, then I'm game after that.
