OT: 1 Week to Bears Draft

Post#1 » by GRADEN » Thu Apr 21, 2011 9:09 am

Did this for my main two football sites but thought maybe (when you want that 1 min a day non-rose related break) some might like to debate the positions, players, and fits we need to fill in the draft. I'd like to add that bc no FA yet in place this will be a VERY different draft for all teams (who stays, who goes, only can trade picks for picks)... Btw, FA has soooo many amazing players in it. That will be a way bigger story then this below average draft (way below imo).

Here are the picks based on what I would do to help the teams... Not what they might do. Of note; you can't predict trades and there will be alot of them but I do believe that the Vikings and Redskins will move into the low-mid 20s to grab Mallett and Locker. Also a chance Mallett could go earlier imo. Really only debate I had was with Fairly replacing Bowers at 6 and 10.

Yes there are some "reaches" but honestly there are all the time so sometimes a team just needs to pull the trigger on a late 2nd rounder at 29 because he is the right guy for them... Talking about us here ;) Enjoy!!

Let me go ahead and defend my Bears picks as I'm sure I'll need to;

T Smith, Carimi, Boling, and Costanzo are all off my board. Our line while better when on our winning steak with Webb in there still needs to be set. 1st rounder Williams from what I see may never truly be anything other than a good versatile backup (the ones you draft in rounds 3-5). Webb has the size but is definitly still developing as is Louis... Garza, Kreutz both won't be getting any better from this point on. Omiyale? Mistake paying him. I know I know... Gilbert is a reach of about 30 spots right? Well, he has every physical tool and has great arm length, can play G and both OTs and is good with a power running playbook. So, take him. Let olin get the nasty in him that doesn't make him a higher pick. Personally, I also like the fact that he seems like a great dude and his dad protects presidents for a living. Great size, technique, and would fit with us well. Just needs to get nasty and have hate for green.

Harris; I like this guy a lot. Again, may be viewed as a reach but not to me. He wants those yards and is a super physical wideout with the ball like a RB looking for each little hole to get a toe more. I'd be thrilled if they took him here. Kind of guy we definitly need. Don't say we need a tall blah blah, we need this guy.

Wiss... Olin's 1 year understudy till he gets the job. Also can play guard but better at center imo.

Wright and Williams... Wright the more ready has all the ability, size, and hitting to work well with our D but will likely be a STr with Jabara (talented underweight project) and stand out right away for a season or two until we let our current crop move on.

Carter... Taylor was below what I thought coming in and wolfe etc... Well we need a guy that can give forte a bit of a break sometimes. Delone could be a perfect fit here. I like his game for our current makeup as our #2.

Graden, I really appreciate all your effort put forth but I think we have a bears board. Now, I don't think I would have seen it if it were there though... ironically enough. lol

Edit: well.....never mind.

The Bears will draft at least one DT. I expect in the first 3 rounds.

Those first two picks are MAJOR reaches. I would be upset if that's how the draft turned out, not if we got those players, but if that's where we took them. Dwayne Harris is a borderline top 20 WR prospect in this draft according to most listings I've seen. Not to be rude, becuase I always enjoy reading your stuff, but this is the worst Bears mock I've seen to date. Two major concerns, CB and DT, aren't even addressed.

Edit: I do like targeting Wiz in the 3rd/4th round range. If Nevis really falls to the 6th round or Austin falling to the 4th (not a chance of either of those even coming close to happening) and we don't take one of them over some of those other guys I'd be pretty ticked off as well.

Some recent mocks have us taking Austin in round 1.

As long as we shore up the O line and add some depth elsewhere, I'll be satisfied. I would like to us fix the line through the draft and obtain a legit WR (preferably a bigger one) via FA/trade.

Some secondary help would also be nice. I look at the Bears defense and think how special it could be w/a ball hawking safety like Ed Reed or Troy Polomolu. I know those guys are rare, but someone from that mold could really put the defense over the top. A game changing guy in the secondary makes this team incredible.

Hoping one of the top tier lineman drops to the Bears. I like the kid Vereen from Cal as a change of pace back. DT is another absolute need, so I can see the Bears reaching in the 2nd or 3rd on this one. Marvin Austin anyone?

Bears absolutely need a stud WR via draft or FA. The smallish WR's in Martz's system might be great in the dome... but the Bears play on a clump of green mud and need a consistent target. Can we dust off Plaxico or is he still locked up somewhere?

Btw, not meaning to mince by Dalton is going top 40, not pick 241. With his accuracy, I could see the Colts making a play for this kid as a future Manning replacement.

mods....

this site has became a complete sham.... the bulls board of which ive been apart of for coming up to a decade now has 9 OT posts in the top 75 in which one is on UFOs??? Isnt there a general discussion forum here or something? Oh yea no one goes to it so they post it here.... Same with this post. A TON of Bulls fans would like to talk Bears draft with THEIR FRIENDS FROM THE BULLS BOARD THAT THEY KNOW DONT VISIT THIS BEARS BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get a pair and put this OT post that is actually related to the city in the bulls forum because it is only 6 days to the draft and people are going to want to have this outlet. Do mods even read posts anymore???

Able... Played ball with your cali homie's last weekend. The twins are cool dudes. How young are you lol?

On picks... Marvin Austin is a pre-madonna baby and has been since about 12. I would hate having him. When I looked at the CB depth I really thought about it hard. Yes a young of size guy would be nice but we first need to sort it out. Nnamdi lol. Kidding... We dont have that cash. Bowman and Graham are only 25,26 and may have fallen out of favor with our coaches a bit but they are talented and still here, then we got tiny tim in to play the nic and he is young. Peanut is a good #1 imo still and we just got in the moore's who are in their first years... We have talent. Major Wright, Manning, Harris are a good base but depth could be used

On D Harris in the late 2nd... Call it a reach I don't care. I want this guy.

http://youtu.be/c_Iv8LQ12a4

He is strong after the catch and very physical with a thread and take it rb mindset. He would be a great addition and simply just looks like a Bear to me in every single way.

Check out the play from 1:30-45 here http://youtu.be/yzXpeP7Cj3I

Draft Harris!!!! I'm not wrong here, no way.

On Gilbert... The dude is going to be a starting lineman if he gets on the right offense. We are the right offense for him and he is extremely versatile. Likely best as either RG/RT imo but damn if he isnt a perfect fit. If I told you we would get a starting lineman with pick 29, would you say make the pick?? Of course you would, and I feel that way about this fit for him and us.

I hate the future of O-line right now.... I think it's awful. Anyone think Williams our only first rounder of the last few years because of the trade is really going to be our starting LT in 2-3 years? Shouldn't top 15 picks be in their primes right now from that year? Webb is better and he is was lucky to get picked.... Lucky for us!

Olin. Garza, Shaf... Getting old real fast and not getting better and we need help!!!!! We should devote 2 /3 top picks to a versatile lineman and a center that can pinch in guard if needed. I've done this. It's the right call.

Dharris stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/pr ... rId=184622

Has 10 catches 119 yards and a TD at top 10 Virginia Tech in which they focused on him.

He is used in a lot of ways but they loved to throw it straight line in the flat and let him go into blocks the way we sometimes use hester. He is extremly good at getting extra yards.

I think he could be there before 100 sure, but I don't want to risk it.

Graham and Manning could very well not be with the team come the start of the season. It's been made clear Graham is only going to be a special teamer (a probowl caliber one) on this team. If he wants a chance to play DB, he'll go elsewhere this offseason and I think that will happen. With Manning, we have tried to resign him and he wants more money. I think someone will give it to him (I hope I'm wrong because I like that 3 headed monster at safety). Tiny Tim didn't play nickel at all last year, it was DJ Moore and I think he'll stay there. We need a Tiny Tim replacement and Tillman is on his last legs. We NEED a CB in this draft. We still have Josh Moore but I really don't know if he's more than a backup at this point as he didn't even play last year, TBD.

Austin very well could be a premodonna and I've heard that talk as well, however, him and Nevis I think fit our scheme perfectly and if they really fall that far in the draft we need to take them (Austin won't get out of the 2nd and Nevis probably not out of the 3rd). Anthony Adams is a FA and if he leaves (I hope not) that leaves us reallllly thin at DT (Big Toe, Melton, Harrison???), yea, we need a DT in this draft too.

I understand the need to bring some youth to the LB core as Briggs/Urlacher aren't getting any younger and with the lockout we don't know what we have with PIsa/Roach but I see bigger more immediate needs and don't think we'll take 2 LB's, maybe one. I don't think we'll draft a RB. I think we'll let Chester have another year and give Unga some changes this year. I also see us taking a QB late in this draft.

The biggest mystery of them all is what we're going to do with Chris Williams this year. I think we need to give him a full year at tackle (whether it be LT or RT). He hasn't gotten a full year, and to this point his play hasn''t proven he deserves one, but I want to give him a final shot to play tackle for this team. If that's how they feel to, I'd really like to shore up the interior of the line (some of which can be picked up in the mid rounds but I'd really like Pouncey). If they feel Williams is going to be a long term guard (ala Gallery moving from tackle to guard) then we certainly need to take a tackle in round 1. Someone like Sherrod or Solder would make sense. I'm really interested to see the direction Tice takes with this oline and how they draft will answer some of those questions. I could also see a FA lineman being added to this team.

Allen Bailey at #12 overall? I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the board in the 3rd round.

Gilbert is a reach.. Over a guy like Danny Watkins who would walk in right away and be able to play RG/RT?

Not a single DL? This would be a pretty brutal draft.

Chris Williams is not a guard. He made that obvious last season.

Gilbert is a reach.. Over a guy like Danny Watkins who would walk in right away and be able to play RG/RT?

Not a single DL? This would be a pretty brutal draft.

My thoughts exactly

The more I think about it, Gilbert could be a guy that we go after in this draft. I went back and watched some of the tape of the PSU bowl game and I think his versatility along with massive size are both things that Tice is looking for in an olineman and while I think the value might not be there in round 1 it's very possible he could be a guy we strongly look at if we don't go DT, WR, the other 5 tackles are off the board, or if we end up trading down. I still strongly feel we need to address DT and DB in the draft, though.

1st Round: Marvin Austin DT 6'2 310 lbs: Most talented DT available
2nd Round: Orlando Franklin OT 6'5 320 lbs: Powerful RT. (Mike Tice kind of OT)
3rd Round: Marcus Gilbert OG/OT 6'6 330 lbs: I like him at LG. He has LT potential and can help Webb on the left side since he is getting moved there.
*3rd Round: John Moffitt OG/C 6'4 320 lbs: Olin Kruetz replacement. Another big buy.

*Additional 3rd Round pick by either trading down a little in the 1st...or trading a future pick...

LT: 6'8 335 lbs
LG: 6'6 330 lbs
C: 6'4 320 lbs
RG:6'7 360 lbs
RT: 6'5 320 lbs
^ That is a Mike Tice offensive line.

Lots of talk on Wide Receivers. Don't like drafting Wide Receivers, its just so hit or miss, and I think fixing our offensive line and defensive line is more important.
