Atlanta Hawks: Home Crowd Makes it Feel Like a Road Game

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:38 pm

Slamonline bunched the entire article together.

I hope the fans show tonight because the team needs their support. Winning game one on the road should bring the fans out and make them feel more confident about the series. We'll see what the numbers are after the game.

It’s the Playoffs, which of course means it’s time for the Atlanta Hawks to engage in their annual verbal warfare with their fickle home crowd. The AJC reports: “The Hawks’ home record during the regular season was 24-17. That ranked 16th in the NBA. Many want to blame the lack of success on poor fan support. The problem with that theory is that the only playoff team with a worse home record than Atlanta this season was the Knicks (23-18), who are one of the best-supported teams in the league. ‘Sometimes it feels more like a road game,’ coach Larry Drew admitted Thursday. ‘Maybe our guys don’t respond to those things very well.’ . . . and it’s not in a marketing slogan, either. But Drew knows: Empty seats or booing fans or too many folks in the crowd pulling for the other team are not legitimate reasons for losing. Teams lose because they lack talent, or interest, or focus. How about if the Hawks give people a reason to show up and cheer? Doesn’t the saying go: ‘Home is where the heart is’? ‘At home at times [this season] it didn’t feel like we had that confidence of the crowd, but I feel like our crowd feeds off what we do,’ Al Horford said. ‘So if we have some highlight plays and really get it going, the crowd buys into that. Or we play hard. That’s all the fans ask for. It’s really disappointing at times we don’t do that as a team.’ Bingo. This sports market has always supported two things: 1) Georgia football; 2) Something else. No. 2 always changes, either because of fluctuating success, the perceived level of commitment of ownership and management or, as Horford said, just flat out effort. In short, fans want to be given a reason to believe. If the Hawks win two home games over the Magic, watch how quickly their bandwagon fills up.” http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/20 ... road-game/

I'd say that 35-40 percent of the people there for games 3 and 4 in 2008 were Boston fans. The Hawks just played so well that you would never have noticed.

Well I mean the Hawks have to start playing basketball. Getting blown out at home 5 times this year is not going to help the fans come out. Hopefully tonight's lucky win will keep the fans in phillips for game 4.
“We played them here, we played them there, we played them with their whole team, we played them without their whole team,” said Crawford of the four meetings. “We match up well with those guys. We definitely respect them, but we don’t fear anybody.”

19,865 tonight.

It should continue for the rest of the playoffs.

I think the city and it's fans really needed this win to feel confident about the team.

I agree with that sentiment. In the last 2 round 2 sweeps we've come home for game 3 with little hope left after large blowouts in the first two games. You add on to that the fact we've never had a truly deep run to engage a larger base for the team. Finally even us hard core season ticket holders can get tired with questionable effort, capped expenses, and constantly hearing about our lack of support. It can make it hard to show up every night during the season.

Well tonight it was an all Hawks crowd. Maybe the Magic haven't inspired anyone to travel this year. Or maybe the Hawks have given the fans reason to believe a little.

Also back in 2008 I got into an altercation with one of those many Celtic fans (well 3 of them). They took exception to my calling KG a dirty punk for his actions that led to the incident with Zaza. We were separated before it came to blows (the 4th Celtic fan was sober. As was I.). 30-40% of the fans there were Celtic supporters in game 3, but in all fairness we were long shots who got drubbed up there. Game 6 had only 10% Celtics fans because we had some hope.

Your very last point is key Evil.

We do have momentum but it could shift so quickly. With potential suspension looming, I think that ORL is actually at an advantage as JJ Reddick, Anderson and even Arenas will have to be used more while we will be sorely be missing Zaza who was instrumental in last night win while controlling Dwight (granted that Collins did the groundwork without getting in early foul touble but when they had their run in the 3rd every decent fan was calling for more of Zaza).

If we manage to win Game 4, even if we would lose 5, you would find a real home crowd for game 6.
