Idea for our OFFENSE!

Post#1 » by ACE_reppin_ATL » Sat Apr 23, 2011 8:04 pm

It just hit me:

Why dont Joe & Horford run pick-n-roll more??? Like Hedo-Dwight in 08.

Joe - would be harder to double, get instant mismatches to attack, and with the pick-n-roll commanding 2-3 defenders, Joe can pass great enough to open everybody up especially if Crawford.

Horford - would be abe to pop to that deadly mid range, roll to basket, or get switch w/ guard defending him (post up)...

We blame Drew for not making such an obvious call.

To me...it looks like the Hawks just freelance whenever Joe or Crawford bring the ball up the floor. There's no way some of those possessions in the 2nd half were actually set plays.

on that last three JC made, they tired to run a pick and roll play. but the Magic double the pick guy before he could set the pick. that is the problem with we don't have enough shooters to space the floor. Josh was hurting us late in the game. we need Marvin to step up but I am not sure if he has it in him.

the reason why Joe and Horford runing a pick and roll is not a great ideas is because of three things:

1. it still allows Dwight to play center field

2. it takes Horford out of the post, and the Hawks should be pressing the issue of feeding Horford in the paint.

3. the Orlando guards are not good on defense, Joe and Jamal don't have problems getting shots in rythem against smaller defenders. the pick and roll won't work when Orlando decides to go to a zone.

Orlando has been sending double teams to Horford, which is great, ........ Joe or Jamal should be sending entry passes to Horford in the paint. if the perimeter defender leaves Joe and goes to double Horford, Joe and Jamal should have some open threes..... so essentially the offense will start and go through Horford, instead of Joe.

Smoove shouldn't be make any entry passes to Horford, because it will leave him wide open for 3s, or if Smoove cuts to the basket after making the pass, Hedo won't need to follow, because Dwight is playing center field. Smoove needs to post up Hedo, or stay on weak side when Horford gets the ball in the post, and cut to the basket when he sees Dwight play help defense to get an alley-oop or offensive rebound.

I do want to see Joe and Collins run the pick and roll, for a play for Smoove, to get Dwight out of the paint, and see how the Magic respond. if Dwight comes out to defend the pick and roll, Smoove can cut to the basket, Joe can make a high lob pass or alley-oop and Smoove can go get it, regardless if Hedo is playing him tight. i always like running this play for athletes and let them play cornerback, because for athletes, it is easier for them to go get it, rather then set them up.

If Dwight doesn't come out to defend the pick and roll, then Joe might have some open 3s.

Horford isn't a good post player.

Horford played 43 minutes and made smart decisions out there. I would argue he's a good player.
