Poll: Do you want JoJo Reyes as a Blue Jay?

Post#1 » by damadmonk » Sat Apr 23, 2011 6:43 pm

I understand what AA is trying to do, create value, from little cost (AGonz) in Reyes. But at the expense of having Litch and now Cecil. These guys seem to have proven they can start in the majors (13 wins/15 wins) and should be working out their issues with the Jays. Hindering their development.

Do you want JoJo Reyes on the team and why?

Had an ok start yesterday with Cecil's problems he can stay there, when Cecil figures it out he should be tried in the BP focusing on just 2 pitches and throwing strikes a LH who can get guys swinging is incredibly valuable in the pen. There is no point in letting him go for nothing when the team is not trying to contend this year.

No, he has no long-term future as a starter in this division. Either move him to the bullpen or trade him.

I don't mind him as a reliever. I'd rather have Scrabble starting, personally.

I think we're playing him to showcase him to other teams that might be interested. AA will work his magic and at least get a decent return for him. The thing about him is that he has some serious control issues but game by game, you somewhat see improvement when you watch him closely. I highly doubt the Toronto Blue Jays future includes Jo-Jo Reyes but I like what we're doing with him.

You're right. Maybe he'll become the next David Purcey someday.

Or Litsch, or Stewart, or Mills, or Richmond, etc.

Maybe not Mills, but yeah, I'd be fine with Litsch or Richmond starting WELL in advance of Reyes. "Just because he's a lefty" isn't good enough, for sure.

Really, I'd be particularly happy with Morrow, Romero, Drabek, Cecil (if he figures himself out) and Scrabble starting. Otherwise slip Litsch in there for giggles as the 5th starter and we're good. I'm really not sure why we have him in the 'pen. I guess he's got among the most IP of our relievers, tied with Frasor and behind Camp and V, but do we really need him there when Reyes might serve well enough if they swapped roles?

*grumble*

I mean, he's (Reyes) been almost as bad as Cecil. More hittable, but better in terms of his ability to get Ks and avoid walking guys.

Bah. Hum bug. I like AA and honestly, I'm ready to put up with Farrell's foibles for now because they're DIFFERENT foibles, but man, Zep's situation is really confounding me.

When David Purcey was Jojo Reyes' age, he had potential to be a better pitcher than he has so far become. Reyes is two and a half years younger than Purcey. He may well follow a similar career path. He has the potential to be better. And the potential to be worse.

Whatever potential he may have, the Jays have several better rotation options going forward than him at #4/#5. If this guy even has a future with this organization, it will almost certainly be in the pen.

I agree that if Reyes were to have a future with this club, it would absolutely be in the pen because there are far too many arms in this organization ahead of him if you're looking at the four and five spots, assuming Romero, Morrow and Drabek form the core of the starting rotation

That said though, as a trade asset, it is definitely in our interest to see what we can get out of him in the rotation.

It is the same philosophy everyone was praising AA for last season; buy low, sell high. He was an afterthought in the Yescobar trade. If you can get anything out of him as a starter, it goes without saying the potential return in moving him would increase also.

Under that premise that he is not a long term option in the rotation, i'm ok with running him out there for now

Very nice outing Saturday. Seems to have found his release point and was mixing up the pitches nicely! I enjoyed watching him pitch. His offspeed pitch to the outer corner against Righties was a killer. I don't think anyone touched it all afternoon. Just do THIS Jojo!!!

Drop the CB and focus on being a FB SL pitcher with the odd change up, would be the ideal mix out of the BP would be interested to see his numbers each time through the lineup.

The way I see it, the the only pitchers in the high minors or above right now that have higher ceilings as a starter than Reyes are Morrow, Romero, Drabek, Stewart, and Rzep. (And Cecil, depending on whether he legitimately lost something off his fast ball.)

I'm fine with Rzep's conversion to the bullpen, if that's where Walton and Farrel feel he can most help the club. Though, going into the year I had him penciled into the Rotation.
