Sacrificing 2011?
I want the 49ers to do well this season but we might have to put our emphasis on 2012 season for a variety of reasons. The first is if the lockout would hurt the 49ers the worst out of any team in my opinion. What other team has a new GM, a new entire coaching staff coming from the college ranks (which will make it even harder to adjust), and a terrible quarterback situation. What this all means is that if we do not get a deal done soon I can almost guarantee we have no chance for the 2011 season. Imagine if the deal gets done in August and so August is when we can go after a veteran quarterback and start implementing new systems. It would not be good for our team. My point for the draft is maybe we should not try to trade back into the first to grab a quarterback who is not actually first round talent and instead look for guys in later rounds like Stanzi and Devlin. This situation might involve us keeping Alex Smith for a year and looking to the 2012 draft for a franchise quarterback. 2012 right now is projecting to be a great quarterback class. None of this sounds ideal but it might have to be the reality.

I will hate this year but I completely agree. I'm hoping we keep Smith around this year because I think he gives us the best shot. (too many other changes like you said) I really want a QB this year, because I'm impatient, but I don't think any of them are actually our future. We have a ton of picks this year. I would like to see us trade some of them for picks next year. Build up picks next year so we can trade down for Luck! Of course on draft day I will still be excited if we get a QB. That's just the way I am.

I told myself that the 2010 season was my last season for me to give Smith a shot, but this lockout makes it seem like maybe we can have him for one more year. It will be a terrible year most likely, but we don't have any options really.
Also I still highly doubt we will ever be able to get Luck. If Luck continues to play as a number one pick then we will not be able to get him. Our team has enough talent to not be the worst in the league and I highly doubt any amount of draft picks will land Luck if he has proven for two years that he is a number one pick. What team (who has the worst record) would be dumb enough to let a franchise quarterback out of their grasps.

Our shot at Luck would be to trade down into the Washington, Minnesota range and pick up a 2012 #1. Then trade down a few more slots and pick up perhaps a 2012 3rd or so. There's a legit shot we would have two top 15 picks next year, plus other picks. I think its possible to blow a team away to move up and get Luck... but we gotta get moving this year. Trade down! Andrew Luck 2012! far fetched... yes i know. haha
Edit: We could also package a few of our picks this year and possibley get a 2012 2nd rounder. I think San Diego seems to historically be in favor of trading future picks for current picks. How about our 3rd and one of our 4ths for SD's 2nd next year.
Whatever we do, we need picks in next year's draft and to not improve too much this year if we want Luck.

I am also coming to grips that 2011 is going to basically be a throw away season on several accounts. That said, I'm still under the midset that Frisco needs to pick up a qube prospect early on in THIS draft. That position is just way to important and Frisco is far too bare at that position to waste an entire season that could have been used grooming a young guy under Harbaugh. If you keep waiting til next season to grab your future QB, you might be waiting on that season for years and years.
Even if Frisco catches lightning in a bottle and somehow lands Andrew Luck next season, having a decent young QB prospect with a year of experience already on the roster is always good for business. I'm not exactly comfortable with any of the 3 current QB's. Do we really want David Carr as a long term backup?
