Current Player Evaluation Thread

Post#1 » by collin_k41 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 3:24 am

If you guys would be up for it I'd love some specific feedback on the players currently on our roster.

First, give each player a ranking from 1-10 based on their highest potential as an NBA player:
10=HOF
9=All-star
8=borderline All-star
7=quality starter
6=fringe starter
5=solid bench/role player
4=pretty limited bench role but plays every game
3=spot minutes in the league
2=out of the league in a few years
1=shouldn't be in the league now

Next, give each player a percent chance of realizing that potential in decimal form.
For example, 50% = 0.5, 35%=0.35 etc....

Next, Multiply the two numbers together, tabulate the results, and post them.

Here are mine:

Michael Beasley 10*0.5=5
Wayne Ellington 5*.70=3.5
Jonny Flynn 7*0.6=4.2
Lazar Hayward 5*.5=2.5
Wesley Johnson 9*0.6=5.4
Kevin Love 9*1=9
Darko Milicic 9*0.3=2.7
Nikola Pekovic 5*.9=4.5
Anthony Randolph 8*0.4=3.2
Luke Ridnour 6*0.9=5.4
Sebastian Telfair 5*0.7=3.5
Anthony Tolliver 6*0.8=4.8
Martell Webster 7*0.4=2.8

My top scorers are:
1. Kevin Love:9
2. Wesley Johnson:5.4
3. Luke Ridnour: 5.4
3. Michael Beasley:5

The system is flawed in the fact that vets get overrated, but this is meant mostly for our "youth" with "potential".

Is this too involved? I really just want people's views on our youth that have or don't have potential. In my opinion we just have too many young players, most of which will not pan out. It'd be good to identify these weak links and get rid of them. If you have a better idea I'm all for it.

Thanks!

Watching these teams in the playoffs, I can't even think about our roster. I just like to pretend that we are in a different league, not just figuratively but factually.

I'm not too worried. If we add Rubio and trade for Iguodala (or a player of his caliber), than we can easily become a playoff team. OKC scares the crap out of me though.

I'll play:
Kevin Love 9*1=9.0 Agree if he continues to add to his game otherwise 8
Wesley Johnson 8*0.85=6.8
Michael Beasley 8*0.8=6.4 Being Beasley he will need 24pt. 7reb B+ def seas. to be an All Star
Anthony Randolph 7*0.8=5.6
Luke Ridnour 6*0.9=5.4
Anthony Tolliver 5*1.0=5.0
Martell Webster 7*0.7=4.9 If he could stay healthy he is a 6-7.
Darko Milicic 7*0.6=4.2 Inconsistent offensive output, lacks heart many nights.
Lazar Hayward 5*.8=4.0
Nikola Pekovic 5*.8=4.0 If he increases lateral speed and vertical jump 4" he's a solid 5.
Sebastian Telfair 5*.8=4.0
Wayne Ellington 4*.8=3.2
Jonny Flynn 3*.7=2.1 I doubt if he will ever be a consistent starter in this league with his inadequesies and unless he checks his self centered attitude he will be out of the NBA and maybe playing overseas in 2 yrs His biggest weakness is he can not play defense in this league right now and not be able to learn to. I thought he showed flashes his rookie season - regressed this season injury or not.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

I haven't read this multiplication thing but that's how I'd judge our teams potential :lol:

Not really. If you're talking about their potential, not how they sucked this year, than Beasley definitely has the potential to be an All Star, Johnson can definitely develop into a quality starter, etc.

50% chance that Beasley becomes a HOF player and he still evaluates out as less valuable than Wes Johnson.

:party:

Edit:

Also this rating system doesn't work at all. Someone with a 60% chance to be a HOF player is definitely more valuable than someone with a 90% chance to be a borderline all-star. However, based on your system, the HOF player is a 6 and the borderline player is a 7.2. The biggest problem is that the 60% HOF player is also probably 100% allstar. The numbers should add up from each lower tier.

Edit 2:

Your system + my change = (in order from most valuable to least valuable)

Kevin Love = 9*1...etc = 45
Michael Beasley = 9*0.3 + 8*0.8 + 7*1...etc = 37.1
Anthony Randolph = 9*0.1 + 8*0.5 + 7*0.8 + 6*1...etc = 35.3
Wesley Johnson = 8*0.2 + 7*0.8 + 6*1...etc = 30.4
Martell Webster = 7*0.2 + 6*1..etc = 22.4
Anthony Tolliver = 6*1...etc = 21
Luke Ridnour = 6*1...etc = 21
Nikola Pekovic = 7*0.05 + 6*0.2 + 5*1...etc = 16.55
Jonny Flynn = 7*0.05 + 6*0.1 + 5*0.8 + 4*1...etc = 14.95*
Wayne Ellington = 5*0.8 + 4*1...etc = 14
Darko Milicic = 5*0.8 + 4*0.9 + 3*1...etc = 13.6
Lazar Hayward = 5*0.5 + 4*0.8 + 3*1...etc = 11.7

*The only one I struggled with is Flynn. I'm not convinced he can't still become a solid backup, or even a starter, on another team, but he'll never get there here.

Ya, your system is much better Aquintus. I didn't really do any debugging beforehand so I figured it could've been better. Also, I'll admit that Beas doesn't have a 50% shot of becoming a HOF. I'm not perfect I guess...

Shoot, I was thinking about this very topic, but I was just thinking a letter grade. This is way more fun. :)

Michael Beasley 9 x 0.6 = 5.4
Wayne Ellington 5 x 0.8 = 4.0
Jonny Flynn 6 x 0.4 = 2.4
Lazar Hayward 6 x 0.6 = 3.6
Wesley Johnson 9 x 0.5 = 4.5
Kevin Love 10 x 0.6 = 6 (max value 9 x 1.0 = 9)
Darko Milicic 9 x 0.3 = 3 (max value 7 x 0.5 =3.5)
Nikola Pekovic 6 x 0.6 = 3.6
Anthony Randolph 7 x 0.6 = 4.2
Luke Ridnour 6 x 1.0 = 6
Sebastian Telfair 6 x 1.0 = 6
Anthony Tolliver 5 x 1.0 = 5
Martell Webster 7 x 0.7 = 4.9

Some guys get higher values when not considering their absolute highest potential, but I think it's an interesting exercise nonetheless.

In terms of the guys we have, I wonder, is Wayvne, who I see as very likely to be a legit role player, really more valuable than Heyward, who I think has a chance to be a borderline starter? This system says he is. I think it rewards likelihood to realize potential. beacuse of this, it makes relative wildcards like Snipes or Randolph look less valuable than Tolliver, who is pretty much what he is. I'm not sure that's totally true.

I didn't buy NBA 2k11 (which I've heard is the best basketball game ever) because I thought Minnesota would have a terrible rating. I refuse to buy any NBA game until Rubio comes to Minnesota.

Minnesota does have a terrible rating, but it's really not hard to outsmart and outplay the computer (and most online players) if you know what you're doing.
