Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
Unfortunately for sports purposes, I live in Minnesota (Canada).
However, I've been tremendous luck to anyone that hates all of their sports.
I would probably like the Wolves if they were to become relevant again and like the Twins, but since I've moved here:
-Twins swept by Yanks in playoffs/falling apart this year
-Wolves...Wolves
-Favre collapse
-Gophs had trainwreck seasons in both sports

I can understand why nobody is taking the risk.
It may not have been just health concerns since Bowers is a better fit as a 4-3 DE. Combine the two concerns and Ted passed, as did 31 other teams.
Well the non-fit may be a Ted reason, but in a draft where you're making such an investment in guys, I just think those are some serious warning flags and that is why all of the GMs passed.

Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
Bowers knee scares me and I think he really is a 4-3 end. It just screams Harrell pick to me so I'm glad we passed. I'm hoping we can get a outside rusher and a wideout in round 2 or 3 and search for the bargain d lineman with those 4th rounders where TT's scouting really shines.

Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
Best value in this draft was the Lions landing Fairley at 13. It wasn't a need (they could've used some OLine and secondary help), but it was a BPA. Picking Fairley actually helps their secondary to an extent as well - greater pass rush = less time to pass = less time for the secondary to get diced up. Suh and Fairley are a scary good interior line.
Worst value was Ponder at 12 by the Vikes. Simply a terrible pick value wise. I know they didn't exactly have a decent QB on their roster, but if I was them, I would have rather taken some line help in Pouncey, Castonzo, Quinn, or even Fairley. Take BPA there and move on. Reach for a QB and you can set your franchise back for several years.
I also didn't get Locker going as high as he did, but I wasn't particularly impressed with any QB in this draft other than Dalton - who I seriously think has some Brady potential.

Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
I love how confident Atlanta is in their next year's pick being about 26th or later, and I read on a few of their boards "it'll be in the 30s anyways." I honestly have them pegged at 9-7 to 11-5. Now, you can win the Super Bowl at 10-6
but I think having the 9th or 10th best QB in the NFL and a below average defense isn't really going to be good enough for them to make a run.
I have nothing against the Falcons in general but actually am cheering against them hard next year so we can finally stop hearing about how Matty Ice's statistical luck in a small sample (read: MASSIVE CLUTCH) is not as important as everyone claims it is. You'd think the Packers crushed that little movement, but I think it's still rolling.

Have you seen their schedule? Obviously there are always a few surprises in the NFL but other than Carolina twice and Tennessee how many gimme wins do they have?
Minnesota and Jacksonville are probably their easiest games after Carolina.

I've been anti-Falcons ever since they BARELY beat us and the country went crazy for Matty Ice. Would love to see them some how miss the playoffs next year. With Tampa and New Orleans in the division it's not completely unthinkable either.

I have Bowers blue balls, but am happy with the Sherrod pick. Tomorrow!

Falcons gave up wayyy too much for Julio. His hands are too questionable to trade away all of those picks. White and Jones will be very good, but their defense still sucks.

I've been anti-Falcons ever since Matty Ice was called a great quarterback for **** outside of his control. **** Matty Ice. Matty Ice can't hit receivers in stride draped in coverage twenty yards down the field. Matty Ice can't scramble. Matty Ice can't roll out and hit a receiver on an out. Matty Ice ain't ****. Matty Ice is melting. I hate Matty ice

Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
Yeah, well I wanted to project an even worse record for the Falcons, but I think they're a middle of the pack NFC team and Julio Jones obviously is going to help, not hurt.
Their style is going to win them a fair amount of the home games they are favored in. They're just not going to have every single ball bounce their way this time.
8 to 11 wins after looking at their schedule, I guess, and I'm starting to slide that towards the 8-9 number.

Anytime you can give up two first round picks and a bunch of other picks for a position largely dependent upon how well the receiver meshes with the system you gotta do it.
LOL @ ATLANTA. "WE HAVE MATTY ICE, WE HAVE TURNER, WE HAVE WHITE, WE ARE GODS!" SO GDLY THEY NEED ANOTHER "PLAYMAKER". MATT RYAN WILL COMPLETE FIFTY PERCENT OF HIS PASSES NEXT YEAR. 100 % TO WHITE AND 0 5 TO DROPSIES MCGEE

And none of them over 20 yards in the air.

None of his passes that long against the Packers will hit the ground because Collins and Tramonzilla and Shieldsapalooza and Heisman DPOY will pick all of them off

With how topsy-turvy the NFC South is, I'm going to predict a Saints-Bucs-Falcons-Panthers finish next year.

Re: Official 2011 First Round Thread
Maybe Jones really is the difference maker that puts them nearly over the top and masks their defense. I can't say it is 100% out of the question.
That said, I've said it many times. The reason the Patriots are always good is that they are so much better than you that they kick the living **** out of you. Then, in the 6 or 7 close games, Brady can't win 1 or 2, and they get unlucky in another 1 or 2. Margin of victory is huge.
I realize the Falcons had a huge margin of victory this year but it was because of another anomaly -- their massively **** schedule.
The Packers were actually incredibly unlucky in the fact that they lost basically every game that they left in doubt, but kicked the **** out of everybody else.
Anyways, back to the Falcons. This is why they went from a nice fringe playoff team, to missing the playoffs, to being "dominant."
1. Schedule
2. Things like the Saints missing a 30 yard FG to win the game or Nate Clements of the 49ers not kneeling after a game-ending INT and inexplicably fumbling. I'm not trying to scorn the Falcons as "ahhh I hate them they're so lucky!" but I'm just explaining the anomaly that helped them get to the record they ended up at.
