Pacers interested in Pritchard?

Post#1 » by Moooose » Mon May 2, 2011 5:17 pm

http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider/2011/05/01/the-search-is-on/

Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey isn’t the only person the Pacers have called around to do background checks on.

They’ve also checked on former Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard, according to a source.

Pritchard traveled with the Pacers on two of their West Coast games in January. Pritchard and Bird are former teammates with the Boston Celtics.

Bird could bring in a new general manager if he returns and decides to part ways with Morway.

The Pacers also have to hire a coach.

So these rumors could be true.. I'd love to have Pritchard as a GM.

Yep, this has been rumored for a while, between Pritchard and Bird seen sitting together at games and let's not forget the fact that Pritchard is an Indiana native. He obviously helped put together a great team in Portland. Some are concerned with him being a little stubborn due to the fact he drafted known injury risks Greg Oden and Brandon Roy. I'll give him a pass on Oden because pretty much every team not named Orlando or Miami likely would've jumped at the chance to take a 7-footer of Oden's quality when healthy. Roy gave them, what, 5 great years before finally seeing his injury woes in full-force.

He and Bird working together would be great though, as it would still be Bird's baby.

Pacers fans do not allow Pritchard into your franchise. You guys are headed in the right direction, he will only ruin things. This guy drafted Oden over Durant and held on to all of his once overvalued young talent until their trade value diminished.

I''m a big fan of Daryl Morey. I wish that we could somehow get him but I'm pretty sure he is fine in Houston.

Daryl Morey? I don't think he's that good.

He's very active on the trading market for sure. However, according to Kevin Martin, the SG of the Rockets, Daryl Morey was too active trading players which made the team chemistry went bad. And that is one important reason why can't Houston make the playoffs.

Another source said that what Daryl Morey did in the trade, makes Rick Adelman unhappy. And that's the reason why Adelman leave Houston.

He is trigger-happy, but given that his franchise player has been out of commission for the last 3 years, I'd say he's active, but not unreasonably so. He also gets results.

I don't think it's right to blame Pritchard for the drafting Oden. Injury-aside, he could have been a good old-school big man, and probably one of the best young centers in the league.
If he picked Durant on draft night, people would probably be blaming Sam Presti now for taking Oden.

This would be more exciting if it said "Pacers interestested in strongly going after Dwight Howard", regardless of the GM.

He does not have a perfect track record by any means. You can view a complete history of his transactions and such as a GM at http://hoopshype.com/general_managers/daryl_morey.htm.

I think that Morey is definitely one of the better GM's in the league. If roster shakeups are what is needed to improve a team, I am all for it. You could argue that Morey perhaps went overboard with trades but the Rockets team he assembled this year finished above .500 (no playoffs.) I believe the Rockets have always been .500 or better with Morey in the GM's seat. Not quite sure but I believe so. I'm impressed with that because the Rockets success has basically came without the franchise cornerstones, Yao and Tmac. I am also impressed with Morey's usage of analytics. He has been very active with the gathering and usage of analytics. I have an appreciation for that and the unique, untold formulas being used today. With all things considered, I would love to get Morey but understand that it is not possible at this time.

Outside of drafting Oden (who 90% of all GM's at that time probably would've taken #1), Pritchard really did a heck of a job. He did what any GM is supposed to do, assemble as much talent as possible...and looking at Portland's roster, there's a lot of talent there.

I have always admired the work Pritchard has done in Portland. He didn't go into that job hand gifted, when he got there the team was on the verge of ending their "Jail Blazers" nickname. They were what the Pacers were just a few seasons ago. Not only did they need to fix their team to make it competitive, they also needed to change their image.

From what I understand, Pritchard was the mastermind of these-

1. Telfair + Ratliff for LaFrentz + 7th overall pick
2. 4th pick (Tyrus Thomas) + Victor Khryapa for 2th overall pick (LaMarcus Aldridge)
3. 7th pick + Randy Foye for 6th overall pick (Brandon Roy)
4. 27th overall pick for Sergio Rodriguez
5. James Jones + trade exception for Rudy Fernandez
6. Drafting Nic Batum with the 25th pick
7. Drafting Greg Oden
8. Zach Randolph + Dan Dickou + Fred Jones for trade exception + Steve Francis + Channing Frye
9. Signed free agents such as Juwan Howard + Andre Miller

Not a bad resume. Sure he made some mistakes that i didn't list and like the above people have said, i don't blame him for Oden over Durant, because nobody could foresee the injuries and almost any other GM would have done the same thing in his shoes.
