Why don't you go sell all your possessions for gold bars, stock up on canned food, and go take your half empty glasses to your storm shelter while we let the realists talk in this thread? Mmkay, thanks.

I thought Jeremy Tyler's rights belonged to the Phoenix Suns? I've been reading that Mitch was looking at Scottie Hopson? Is Hopson not coming out?

Re: Official Lakers Draft Thread *Updated 5/5*
Jeremy Tyler is the kid that skipped his senior year of high school to go play in Israel and sent last season in Japan. He was considered a good HS talent (projected to go lottery in 2009), but has fallen out of favor while playing over seas. Depending on our status, he could be a could Bynum type project player. This is his first year of eligibility, so his rights are not owned by anyone. Here is a high school mix of him (can't find any from his Israel or Japan games)

Scotty Hopson (if he stays in the draft, don't think he has an agent yet) would be one of my first picks for the Lakers in the second round. He's been projected between the middle and end of the second round, but is an ESPN Top 50 player I believe. He has the explosiveness we need and could be a good contributor down the road.

The question with both of these players is do we want to develop them or go for players that are seniors and have just about peaked, but could give some scrounge minutes here and there, ie Keith Benson from Oakland.
I'm hoping that we decide who our next coach will be by draft time so he can get a say in this (Brian Shaw was formerly a scout I believe so I'd be interested in seeing his draft choices).

Man it depresses me when we talk about the NBA draft. I can't believe we may go out like this before the lockout......

Thanks for the info on Hopson. I sure hope the Lakers picked him up. He is a Grieves Vasquez type player. he ain't scared and he can play defense.

Re: Official Lakers Draft Thread *Updated 5/5*
^ LOL.
It's sad but lets face it, this team has underperformed all season and just expected to turn it on when their backs were against the wall. Now their backs are against the wall and they realize they don't have what it takes to turn it on. It was a great run, a great 2-peat but now it's time to step off the throne. Of course, if we somehow win the series then the poop will be on my face.
Hopefully this draft thread stays up.
I'd be ecstatic if we ended up with:
41: Keith Benson, PF/C
46: DeAndre Liggins, PG/SG/SF
56: David Lighty, SG/SF
58: Euro
Benson's already been described, same as Lighty. Liggins is described as a poor man's Iguodala. He can play all the positions 1-3, handle the ball, and play great defense. And with the last pick just draft a euro and develop him.

Re: Official Lakers Draft Thread *Updated 5/5*
I'm really high on Benson as well. I know he's from a small school in Oakland, but he can rebound at 10 a game and can block shots at 3.6 bpg... those are two things that should translate to the NBA relatively well. The scoring at 18 a game will be questionable, but the fact that he had a FG% of 56% shows that it's not just pure volume.
Also i know a lot of people are like draft? in the playoffs? I'm not giving up on the playoffs by any means, but I've grown fond of the draft in the past few years and now that I actually know some of the players (ie have met and talked to IRL) it's even more interesting to me.

I think we need a point guard with handles, who can penetrate and play good on ball defense, a scoring SG off the bench, and another banger down low.

Re: Official Lakers Draft Thread *Updated 5/5*
Cory Joseph - PG/SG - Fr. - Texas
Sounds like a winner for our PG spot. The issue we have with him is whether or not he will fall far enough into the second round with us. He also hasn't signed an agent yet so he could still withdrawal (although indications are that he will enter the draft without one).
Our best bet for the SG woes is Scotty Hopson without a doubt. I personally like Benson for the banger roll. He wasn't consistent against a weak conference schedule, but like I said earlier, rebounding usually carries over very well to the pros. He has a solid frame for the scrapper role as well:

The issue is, outside of Benson, neither Hopson nor Joseph are guarantees to be in the draft (both underclassmen with future first round talent if they stay in school) and both are wild cards that could crash down to us late in the second round or be surprise picks at the end of the first round if they have good combines...
ESPN wrote:He loves to go left and uses spin moves or changes speed and direction to get by his defender with ease. He is a threat from the three point line and forces his defender to play close and excels at scoring off the dribble with a pull-up jumper in the lane or an acrobatic finish around the rim.
Rivals! wrote:A sound decision maker with a strong will to win, Joseph also has a surprising athletic burst to go along with his high skill level. With his high level feel for the game, he transitions well from being a distributor to being a scorer. He shoots the ball much better than most point guards and is an elite defender.

Gilbert Brown

One of my favorite players in the draft (Hail to Pitt!). Gilbert is already 24, but hasn't reached his full potential yet. Gilbert is explosive, he's an athlete. He doesn't have a problem slashing on the offensive end without the ball or getting in for the rebound on either end. He doesn't have the handles needed to solve our issues as a driver on the wing though (I'd say he has Shannon Brown style handles). His shot is fairly better than Ebanks' coming out of school and his spot up shooting from three has been improving every year. His most valuable aspect of his game is his defense. He has great lateral movement and the athleticism and strength needed to keep up with some of the bigger guards. Whether he ends up on the Lakers or not, I see him carving out a niche role in the NBA as he improves his shooting and ball handling.
Oh yeah, and he can dunk:

Oh and what's this? A Brad Wanamaker name drop? He can penetrate, but may be too small for SG and too awkward for PG. He's first in the video, a potential banger from Pitt in Gary McGhee is next in the video. He doesn't bring much offensively but can bang defensively. Gilbert Brown is at the end.

Draft express updated.... looks like David Lighty is a recurring theme for the Lakers. It will be interesting to see i we get a chance to get Shelvin Mack and how the Lakers losing changes the Mock's.

He's too small, too unathletic and would have been lucky to have been taken in the second round. He is one of the best shooters in the NCAA, if not the best.

Is he really that bad of a prospect? The little I saw of him during the season, left me with the feeling that he was a serviceable prospect. Nothing that makes you say wow, but he's ok.

If he improves his ball handling and learns to drive to the hoop he'll make the NBA.
