2014 World Cup Qualification Thread (CONCACAF, CONMEBOL)

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Thu May 5, 2011 7:24 pm

Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualification

1. Preliminary Round. Teams ranked 26–35 would play-off to reduce the number of entrants to 30.
2. First round. 6 groups of 4 teams. This round would include the 5 qualifiers from the preliminary round plus teams ranked 7–25. The top team in each group would advance to the next stage.
3. Semifinal Round. 3 groups of 4. Teams ranked 1–6 would face off against the 6 group winners from the previous round. The top two in each group would advance.
4. Final Round. The top two teams in each group from the semifinal round compete in one group of 6. The top three teams would advance to the world cup, while the 4th place team would advance to an intercontinental playoff.

South American Football Confederation 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualification

The format is identical to the previous four World Cup qualification tournaments held by CONMEBOL, with all competing nations playing each other home and away in a single group.[1]

In qualification for recent World Cup finals tournaments, the CONMEBOL nations have had four direct qualifiers, with a fifth nation competing in a play-off with a team from another confederation. The same number of spots have been retained for the 2014 tournament, despite Brazil's automatic qualification as the host nation.

The fifth-placed team of CONMEBOL will compete in the inter-confederation play-offs with a team from another confederation, which will be either AFC's fifth-placed team, CONCACAF's fourth-placed team or OFC's first-placed team, to be chosen through a random draw.

I know it seems MEGA early for these threads but both the AFC and CONCACAF qualification tournaments start next month. It's crazy to even be thinking about 2014, but the journey for some teams begins very soon.

Also if someone would like to make a UEFA thread when to time is right that would be great. I'll do my best to update both these threads as I have split up the confederations in a pretty fair way I think. UEFA is just too much for me to update.

I'll bump these threads just before game one.

I believe the number now sits at 40 teams. Wikipedia may not be the greatest source but I have always found for soccer they lay out these tournaments in the most understanding way possible.

Qualification can be confusing.

CONCACAF delayed...

The matches are scheduled to be held prior to the main draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Originally, the first legs were scheduled for 3 June 2011 and the second legs on 7 June. However, the matches were postponed to scattered days in June and July. The 5 winners will advance to the second round of the CONCACAF qualifiers.

I'll have the new dates up soon, the first game is now June 5th with Saint Lucia vs. Aruba.

CONCACAF is really starting to piss me off.

Saint Lucia and Aruba has now changed to July 8th and 12th. All other games remain the same.

My guess is the lack of good playing fields and that CONCACAF is pretty much without a leader right now. Likely lots of infighting.

Belize wins 5-2 over Montserrat to start off the tournament to the World Cup. Second leg to be played June 19th.

I was really hoping for a Montserrat win, not because I follow the team but simply because that small little country needs something to cheer about. If you don't know where Montserrat is, look it up. The little island is basically an active volcano and half of it has been destroyed and abandoned because of it.

They still have a chance to settle things and reschedule but I doubt that will happen. We'll see.
