Ummmm, no. People were not wondering if Ed Davis could catch a ball.

Reading the whole sentence will do wonders for you friend, I said "minus the knock on his hands....", sadly people on this board jump the gun just so they can slam on someone. Ed was horrible offensively during college. They knocked his face up game as well as his back to the basket.

Offensively, Davis remains extremely raw, being mostly limited to finishing plays in the immediate area around the basket and having a difficult time creating his own shot. His lack of strength makes it tough for him to establish position deep in the post and finish through contact in traffic, something that forces him to settle for difficult shots outside of his comfort zone. His footwork is raw and he avoids his right hand like the plague (he’s left-handed), not looking all that impressive when forced to improvise on the fly, and having a very difficult time against more physical defenders.

LoL what skill, did you even watch him play at UNC??? He was a great rebounder and shot blocker.... he was hella skinny, and couldn't hit a jumpshot to save his life.... He was limited to put backs his entire year.

Btw I love how the term skill is now used to mean offensive ability. Last I read, skill can be applied to either end of the court.

Yeah Davis wasn't exactly polished offensively when he came out. Definitely less "raw" than Biyombo, but he was also a little older at the time of the draft.

A little over a year older then Bismack actually. Plus our coaching staff has only ever been able to develop players offensively so I see no reason not to draft him. Not to say he is who we should take, I think that is completely situational, just that he isn't a flawed as people are suggesting.

I think the thing that sets Kanter apart from other C prospects is his fundamentals. He has great footwork in the post, which is something a lot of 7fts do not have. He also has good IQ when he is down there. He shows patience instead of panic. That kind of craftiness is something that can translate well into the NBA despite his average athleticism.

It's always interesting to hear the reactions & comparison made by scouts this time of year. I found a pretty good article with insight from NBA Draft Insider’s Kristofer Habbas from this past weekend, not sure if it's been posted.

Kanter scored a Nike Hoop Summit-record 33 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the 2010 game in Portland against a Team USA front line that included Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger, Florida’s Patric Young, Kentucky’s Terrence Jones and North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes.

According to ESPN.com’s Fran Fraschilla, if the 19-year-old Kanter had played college basketball this year, he would have had the same impact on Kentucky that Sullinger did with the Buckeyes.

Fraschilla said Kanter invites contact around the basket, has good footwork and has a nice shooting touch out to the college 3-point line.

The consensus is that Kanter isn’t a superior athlete and that he might not have a lot of upside. Habbas said Kanter will play center in the NBA.

“He’s a good rebounder, but not a great one,” he said.

Habbas agrees that Kanter is the most ready to play — if he’s near his playing shape of 255 pounds.

“If he’s in shape, he’ll be the most impactful (international player),” he said.

Fraschilla reports that Kanter is currently working out in Chicago with famed NBA skills guru Tim Grover.

He’s a player on the Cavs’ radar if they land the No. 2 or 3 pick in the draft.

He reminds scouts of: Al Jefferson

Jan Vesely, Czech Republic, power forward, 6-11, 240: He’s one of the best athletes in the draft. Fraschilla predicted he would win an NBA dunk contest someday.

Some seem to think he can play small forward in the NBA, which might be a stretch. He has a good motor, runs the floor well and moves great without the ball.

Habbas said Vesely is a “stretch 4.”

“He has a good set 3-point shot,” Habbas said. “His biggest skill is his ability to stretch the floor. He has a combination of athleticism, rebounding and hustle.”

He reminds scouts of: Andre Kirilenko.

Bismack Biyombo, Congo, power forward, 6-9, 243: Fraschilla guarantees that no more than three teams even knew who this guy was before January. Now, he’s going to be a lottery pick.

Defensively, he could be a force early on in the NBA because of his 7-7 wingspan, strength and athleticism. He burst upon the scene in last month’s Hoop Summit with a triple-double.

But as good as he could be defensively, he’s just as raw offensively. That’s why scouts don’t compare him to fellow countryman Serge Ibaka, who can make a mid-range jump shot.

“The issue I have is whether he can catch the ball,” Habbas said. “He doesn’t have the greatest hands. I don’t like the Ibaka comparison. It’s more like Ben Wallace when he first came to the league.”

Habbas said he’s seen Biyombo ranked as high as No. 3 on some draft boards.

“I’m vehemently against that,” he said. “But he’ll likely go in the top 10.”

He reminds scouts of: Ben Wallace.

Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuania, forward/center, 6-11, 230: Scouts are raving about his potential. But he’s probably the least ready of the international prospects scheduled to be drafted in the lottery.

“In this draft, I like him the most,” Habbas said. “He has the potential to do everything. But he doesn’t do anything great. He does outwork everyone.

“He needs to spend one or two more years in Europe.”

Valanciunas turned 19 on Friday. Fraschilla said his size, agility and athleticism make him very enticing for a team willing to wait for him to physically mature. Would that be enough for a team like the Cavs to bypass him in the draft?

They need immediate help, something he won’t be able to provide. On the other hand, they’re not going to be real good next year and might be able to wait for Valanciunas to mature.

ESPN.com’s Chad Ford has the Cavs taking Valanciunas with the eighth pick in his latest mock draft.

He reminds scouts of: Andris Biedrins.

Eh, I got 2/3 of the comparisons right. Nevermind about my Kanter and Brad Miller comparison. I see more of Zach Randolph in Enes than Al Jefferson. I would definitely be happy to have Kanter if we miss out on Irving and Williams especially seeing Randolph in the playoffs. I can see our team emulating a poor version of the Grizzlies.

You're right, but Perry isn't in this draft. Perry isn't the hulk either, he's a slim guy. Plus Perry seemed disenterested sometimes in the games I saw him in. Vesely's motor doesn't stop. I think he would be a better fit with our core. Davis/Amir/Vesely/Derozan/JB is a wave of athleticism. Good fit.

I see Charles Oakley. The other ones are easy, but I think Valanciunas is much better offensively than Biedrins.

One week until the day that could either be the first step in the reinvigorating of this franchise, or just anothe step towards acquiring a role player. Very exciting times. Irving or Williams and life is good.

Yep, gonna be a long week, for sure... but I think I'm fine even dropping as low as 5th, because I've sold myself on Irving/Williams/Kanter/Walker/Knight (in that order right now). We end up with one of those five, (preferably Irving, of course) and I'm walking away moderately happy at the very least.

Still on the fence on Biyombo, but I hope he can win me over with an impressive showing at the workouts/combine. Then there's no way we can fail! (Until BC picks Donatas :()

i agree. If we drop then so be it, i just pick Knight and be done with it. If we move up hey thats great but either way i think were walking away with a solid prospect.

kings was in the same situation last year from 3rd drop down to 5th to get cousins. I think this year we might not end up 5th...the worst coming is 4th or 6th

Dime: Heading into the NBA Draft, what players excite you? Who do you think would fit in with your current Raptors squad?
DD: It’s tough to say, but I like Kemba Walker’s game. I played against him in high school. Just the way he plays, I think he’ll make a major impact in the League using screen and rolls and being able to shoot and break down guards and everything. I like Kyrie Irving too, he’ll definitely be big. But I think there are just a handful of guys though.

Apparently CoJo has received some sort of promise from a team. Some speculate that it's the Cavs, which could perhaps be somewhat insightful into their intentions with their two lotto picks (or not, who knows).
