Change the Wizards name to...

Post#1 » by Zonkerbl » Tue May 10, 2011 4:56 pm

So now that we have completed the first phase of revamping the zards image, let's move to the more important issue, the stupid stupid name. As long as this franchise is named the wizards it will never be successful. Apart from the Bullets, which Ted has said he will not do out of respect to the Pollins', what should the new name be?

Ground rules: As previously mentioned you may not suggest the Bullets. You may not suggest the Generals (for obvious reasons), the Senators, or the Monuments.

I vote for the Grays. The name of the old baseball team, I think it's great. Might be a little too subtle.

Portland put "Rip City" on their jerseys. We should put Chocolate City on ours.

I don't think they will, but that should stop your speculation. I think this is as far as Ted plans on going with the change--or else why wouldn't he just change both at the same time and not have ANOTHER jersey alteration when he supposedly changes the name?

Just putting that out there.

Washington Presidents?

I don't know, I really don't mind Wizards to be honest.

My Dad recommended the Washington Traffic. Bullets is the ONLY name, but since I can't use that, I will take the next 10 minutes to come up with one of my own.

Washington Wall
Washington Wavelength
Washington Weapons
Washington Wheels
Whashington Whiplash.

But my submission is the Washington Blues. Blues meaning Blues music. However, it would suck cus we just changed the colors. But Blues is an American made music, and the DC Blues seen, Blues Alley, and we have the patriotic colors and stuff.

Bullets gosh darn it.

Hmm, something that makes sense with the city. Ties in with existing symbols. The official bird sucks for a team name -- Wood Thrush. Sounds like an illness.

Official flower is the American Beauty Rose. Washington Beauties sounds like a name for a 3rd grade dance team.

Official tree is the Scarlet Oak. Makes me think of scarlet fever. And Scarlet O'Hara. And the Kentucky Oaks. Also, I can see the headline, "Spurs Lay Wood to Oaks" or "Oaks Wilt Under Pressure from Heat".

City seal shows a female "Justice" hanging a wreath on a George Washington statue. Washington Justice isn't bad.

I'm probably in the minority but I don't have a problem with Wizards. Why do we need a new name?

In fact, it would probably be a mistake--and would show a certain level of fickleness and/or insecurity--to change the name yet again. The Lakers have been fine with that name since they were in Minneapolis, the Hawks went from St. Louis to Atlanta and kept the same name, and Memphis stuck with Grizzlies, even though there are probably no grizs in Memphis like there are in Vancouver.

Let's not get fixated (or distracted) by the team's name. You make your "name" memorable and popular by playing winning basketball...pure and simple.

I do like the new unis and colors, especially the hat with the ball emerging from the top of the "d" in "dc." Very similar to the old Bullets logo with the two hands throwing up the ball.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?????????

You're comparing the "Wizards" to "Grizzlies" and not seeing a difference?

The name "Wizards" is THE STUPIDEST NAME FOR A TEAM EVER. That is why it needs to change. There is nothing embarassing or childish about "Grizzlies" or "Lakers" or "Hawks." Those are perfectly acceptable names.

WIZARDS? Just say that name a couple times to yourself. Let's do some word association:

Wizards
Quidditch
Disney
Diapers
Poopoo
Stinky
Lousy
Crappy
Worthless
Incompetent
Untalented
Unloved
Hated
Evil
Satan
End Times
Armageddon
Heat Death

Should I go on?

Actually "Heat Death" wouldn't be such a bad name.

I would go with "Generals," to tap into the rich tradition of the Washington Generals. Or Seadogs.

If it's not going back to Bullets, I don't really mind Wizards.

We have the Washington Capitols, Washington Nationals, Washington United and then the WASHINGTON WIZARDS. Sounds like this name wasn't given any thought. I think he'll rename the team The Washington Monuments. The logo is already on the uniform with the ball & monument.

Really, the only decent names I've heard since Pollin decided to change it are Justice and Express. 90% of suggestions I've heard over the years rival Wizards for awfulness.

Pollin wanted to change the name to the Washington Monuments when it was changed to Wizards, but the feds blocked it...something about "Washington Monument" being copyrighted.
