Russell Wilson - New Badger QB

Post#1 » by ReasonablySober » Wed May 11, 2011 11:10 pm

2nd team All-ACC in 2010, playing baseball in the Rockies system now. It's questionable whether or not he could leave the Rockies early enough to learn UW's system.

Would be a great get.

ETA: Got my year wrong on the All-ACC.

I'm down.

The problem is I can't tell you how disappointing Badger transfer/QB/big recruit rumors always end up being. Always a flop or more likely doesn't happen.

On the surface it sounds good, but if it happens, I'm not going to expect anything out of him. Odds are he'll flop, or just not even get a chance. Sounds good on the depth chart though, I guess.

You guys are way underrating this guy. He's thrown for 3000 yards twice and has had TD seasons of 29 and 31...lol when is the last Badger QB to do either of those? Never His freshmen year he threw for 2000 yds and 17 tds which is pretty similar production to what the Badgers have been getting the last 5 years.

Others teams competing for his services: Auburn, LSU, South Carolina...he'd start here.

This might have legs..

I'm not downplaying how good he might be, I'm just saying these "cool" scenarios never seem to happen or we get a highly touted QB like Curt Phillips and he flops. I have no doubt that Wilson could be great, I just don't see it happening.

Also, please god do not use a Bleacher Report article in "has legs." That site is one of the worst things on the internet. Call me a sports snob, but it passes off a ton of incorrect and stupid thoughts from fans as what looks like a real article/fact.

How about sporting news and cbs? Do those pass your test? The point is it's being discussed.

How about nbc?

I wasn't mocking you. I'm just saying that Bleacher Report is the bane of the internet. I never disagreed that you had sources.

You'll see things like: "Top signings of 2010!" with their stupid slide show format. You'll see something like #4 being Drew Gooden: "A tough big man that bangs inside and has a variety of post moves and shoots well from the otuside!" Then you'll realize the article was written by Nebula1 -- err -- Gary Busey.

I've seen entire rankings of MLB players on there strictly by their batting average which is also stupid.

Point is, it's just a bunch of random idiots writing articles and it portrays itself as a legitimate news source.

It would be like publishing our discussions on RealGM as fact. However, I'd like to say that the main posters on this board are 10x more sports savvy than the BR writers.

If this doesn't happen, do any of you guys think this might adversely affect Budmayr's confidence which may already be kind of low after the spring game?

If it does happen, Wisconsin would probably have to be considered the favorite in the 'Leaders' (or is it 'Legends'?) division with all of the crap that's going on in Columbus right now.

It shouldn't matter. I think a lot of those "affects his confidence" things are overblown. If Beilema publicly asks for Wilson to play and it fails, then it will affect Budamyr.

Of course, I have no idea how good he is going to be. Obviously, he's the next guy in line but I don't know much about him. I know that he's not a 5 star guy and hasn't necessarily dazzled so if he does struggle, it could just be because he sucks, but I'm sure a bunch of the talking heads will point to this.

Yeah, maybe you just go with Wilson this year and then go with Bart Houston as a true freshman the following year, especially if Houston could graduate a semester early.

Wouldn't he have to sit out a year?

Interesting, so the rule for transferring between D1 schools only applies to those who have remaining coursework? I never knew that.

I didn't either. Odd rule, IMO.

I'll take him over what we have now.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

In order for Wilson to come here and be eligible, he must pick a degree/program not offered at NC State.

That would be pretty easy to do. There are a handful of agricultural ones that are not at NC State among plenty of other ones.

Phillips, as a true frosh, was barely beat out by an upperclassman who ended up as one of the better QB's in the conference. He has flopped up until this point due to repeated knee injuries. So I don't see how his success or lack there of is applicable to this situation, because Wilson wouldn't be entering the program carrying injuries (that I know of), and especially since he's proven.

But I agree that the news is not worth getting that excited about before because of all the past high profile recruitments that fell flat on their faces. That said, a high profile QB just did commit to UW given the perceived favorability of the depth chart at the same position, and we are talking about a transfer here who'd need to play right away and thus have very limited options.
