Choose your own adventure: REALGM style

Post#1 » by The Beam King » Mon May 9, 2011 8:27 pm

[EDITED]
Since the lotto hasn't happened yet, I'm operating under the assumption we remain at #5(best odds of happening).

First, I would deal Beno to the Bobcats with Casspi for Diaw and the #19 overall pick.

So to begin I would draft Brandon Knight at #5, at #19 I would draft Lucas Noguera(High Upside pick), @ #35 I would take Charles Jenkins, and at #60 I'd grab Vernon Macklin

Next I would re-sign Thornton(I think he gets something like 5 years 30 million - or 6 million annually.)

I would just go ahead and re-sign Daly - probably a little cheaper and more feasible to happen.

Kings current roster:
C: Dalembert, Whiteside, Nogueira
PF: Cousins, Thompson, Macklin
SF: Diaw, Garcia, Greene
SG: Tyreke, Thornton, (Taylor)
PG: Knight, Jenkins, (Jeter)

I don't want CV anywhere near this team. We're full up with minutes for bigs, and we've currently got great size with our bigs. A stretch 4 is nice, but it's a luxury.

I'd probably look to trade #5. But then, I'd look to trade anyone in this draft except for probably Irving right now.

Yeah, I'm kinda seeing that. I'll re-update. You got an off-season plan you care to share?

It would obviously depend on who is available--both at our draft position and via trade. Granger is somebody who I'd really consider trading the pick for. I don't know of any PGs that are really available, but I think that's what we need more than anything. I think we're basically fine at SF. We could get an upgrade, but I think that would be a luxury in a purely basketball sense.

That's not to say there aren't ones that could really help this team, particularly in terms of veteran leadership. In that sense, Battier would be ideal, but I think he's destined to re-sign with Memphis. So there are also guys like Prince.

I don't know, I mean the lottery is just in like, a week. I guess I'm thinking we might as well wait until then.

Depending on who fills out that SF position it might be a necessity for this team. I think if Dallas is proving one thing right now, it's that shooting the ball and in particular the 3-ball is....nice.

We gotta add shooters. Particularly at the 1 and 3. Thonton can add shooting at the 2 off the bench, but with Tyreke as our principle piece we need solid, consistent shooting at the 1 and the 3.

Shooting is nice, and prior to acquiring Thornton we were desperately missing it. Now it's something we could still stand to improve, but it's not as dire as it was. Give either Omri or Donte a more consistent role and I think we'll see consistent shooting from them, and then with Cisco, I think our shooting at SF should be fine.

Beno is kind of an issue here and that's one reason why I think we need a different PG. It's not that Beno is a bad outside shooter. He is very average, but spreading the floor isn't his thing. He's best at creating a shot for himself. We just don't really need that. We need a floor general that defenses have to respect in terms of his outside shot.

It's also worth noting that a real stretch 4 becomes less necessary when you consider that all of our current bigs are very capable mid-range shooters. We don't have a Jason Collins on our teams who other teams can basically ignore.

Here's my "adventure" (trying to be realistic):

If we stay at 5th pick. Trade #5 pick, Omri Casspi & capspace to 76ers for Andre Iguodala
Resign Marcus Thornton 5yr/38mil, Samuel Dalembert 4yr/38mil & Darnell Jackson 1yr/1mil
Sign JJ Barea 4yr/16mil & Chuck Hayes 4yr/16 mil
Draft Jamie Skeen #35
Draft Isaiah Thomas #60

Active Roster
Tyreke Evans/JJ Barea
Marcus Thornton/Beno Udrih
Andre Iguodala/Francisco Garcia/Donte Greene
DeMarcus Cousins/Chuck Hayes/Darnell Jackson
Samuel Dalembert/Jason Thompson

Suit/D-League
Isaiah Thomas
Jamie Skeen
Hassan Whiteside

This would put our payroll under 68 million which would've been 16th out of 30 teams last year. We should also be a top 16 team and in the Western Conference playoffs. It will still depend on the development of Tyreke & DeMarcus to ultimately become contenders. But with a competitive, playoff bound team playing, the arena should go back to sell outs everynight with excitement that the shovel is in the ground for our new downtown arena.

No use in signing guys we won't have many minutes for them. I wouldn't sign Hayes or Barea unless other moves were made to make room for them.

3. Trade:

Sign and trade Sam Dalembert to NY for Ronny Turiaf and draft rights to Tyler Honeycutt.

I think it's kinda risky to trade for a one-armed center who seems to be regressing mentally. Dally/JT>Bogut/Turiaf.

Really? I don't get this. Not only do I think it's overpaying, I think Daly's a much better fit for this team.

Some out of the box thinking and pairing up two of the better passing bigs in the league, not to mention probably an equally as good a shotblocker as Daly. If Westphal is determined to call plays for both bigs in the post it's probably better to have somebody like Bogut than Dalembert. I was trying to think who could fill that role and not cost the Kings all the shotblocking/rebounding.

Mbah a Moute is somebody I'd really like to see the Kings go after. I think he's an interesting player at PF. I really like how he plays defense there, with the exclusion of guarding DeMarcus Cousins of course  . He gives some of the more skilled PF's like Amare fits because he's so good at swatting the ball away from them. I also think it's extremely important to be able to switch on defense. Dallas switched on defense almost exclusively and that's how they really made life hell for Kobe and the Lakers. This is a team with a ton of versatility and depending on who's out there it would be able to basically switch EVERYTHING at times.

Is it overpaying? Maybe, but it's also a deal that the Kings are able to shed a little salary in so they can make some of the other moves as well as have some wiggle room moving forward. Each player moved has a dollar sign attached to them so that was a factor.

I disagree. We most likely won't be able to attract marquee free agents. Guys like Barea and Hayes are obtainable and won't break the bank. Plus they are 26 and 27 respectably. Hayes is from Nor Cal. Beno & JT's contracts will be coming up & there's no guarantee they'll resign. We're banking on the young guns (Evans/Thornton/Cousins) to be our "Big 3". Barea and Hayes are the type of character guys on and off the court that we need (BJax-Pollardesque).

Good find. I've considered him as well. He'd be an economical signing along the lines of my Barea/Hayes thought and he'd probably even be cheaper.

1. My dream offseason starts with us drafting Irving/Knight. Being the realist that I am for this post I will say we draft Knight (bcuz we all know Sac will not get #1, thanks Stern). Draft Isaih Thomas from Washington in the Second round. I watched him all year, honestly think he would fit our team better than K. Walker

2. We sign Wilson Chandler in FA, essentially overpaying to a degree. Life of a small market team.

3. Resign Dally to a much cheaper contract

4. Trade Casspi/Jackson for Amir Johnson

Knight/ Beno/ Thomas
Evans/Thornton
Chandler/Garcia/Greene
Cousins/Johnson/Thompson
Dally/Thompson/Whiteside

Thornton is our 6th man while Beno's minutes see a significant decrease. As the trade deadline approaches, and elite team with PG injuries/issues offers a package for Beno.

Assign Whiteside, Thomas to D league

Another option would be to keep Casspi and deal with his unhappiness with PT until we can package him with Beno for a front court player

Return to Sacramento Kings
