Amnesty Clause...... A dream come true/ More

Post#1 » by Jetset » Thu May 12, 2011 10:15 pm

Another key wrinkle from the rejected proposal, sources said, called for the ability for each team to shed one contract outright before next season through a one-time amnesty provision that wipes that contract off a team's books -- even though the player must still be paid -- reminiscent of a similar provision in the summer of 2005.

The league likewise has proposed to eliminate sign-and-trades in the next labor agreement. In a provision conceived by the league to inspire loyalty, teams are presently allowed to pay their own free agents more than anyone else. But that ability to offer a contract one year longer than the competition often has resulted in marquee free agents getting traded to the team they choose in free agency after first signing a larger contract with their original team, as seen with both James and Bosh last summer.

Best news I've heard all day. The possibility of getting rid of Luke is fantastic. Don't really know what to say about the possible elimination of S&Ts.

Just kidding ... nice knowing you Mr. Walton

Elimination of the S&T is needed, it's been flawed and exploited badly in the last 10 years. It will make deals harder to make but bottom line it now will call the bluff of a free agent. Now we'll see who really has the heart to opt out of contracts and test the market. Until now players always knew they could fall back on the S&T's.

So if Luke is cut, how much does the Lakers have to pay him? I have no idea how that works, sorry.

Luke Walton would be paid his contract, but Buss would not pay the luxury tax bill.

As far as other teams you might see Rashard Lewis, Gilbert Arenas, and a few others cut free.

Why just kidding? The lakers should seriously consider that. Kobe would still get his huge money and then he could play it off as he's all about the team and helping them, etc.

Luke does NOT earn his money. He gets paid starter $ and can't get PT over Artest or Barnes.

We paid him to keep Phil Jackson happy. But Phil's gone so Luke should go now.

"CUTTING" Kobe is kind of a slap-in-the-face thing IMO.

no u cut kobe.

and re-sign him for a much lower salary. kobe gets even more money. lakers save 24-30 million in luxury tax

kobe would jump at the chance to give this team more flexibility

Some rich ass owner is going to use this to his advantage and go after one of the big 2012 free agents.

^ Just remember who said it first!

The only reason I said "just kidding" is because I think if Kobe and the Lakers did that the league would slap them with huge fines and say they were circumventing the new rules ... it's an ingenious idea though and I could see quite a few stars doing it such as: Kobe, Duncan, Dirk, Pierce, Joe Johnson, etc.

But yeah, this rule could be called the Orlando Magic rule as Arenas and ex-Magic Shard Lewis should be two of the first guys cut ... others: Darko, Brand, Villanueva, Diop, Okafor, Brandon Roy ...

I'm pretty sure they'll have a time frame or rule that the cut player cannot re-sign with the original team. They aren't that stupid.

Dallas used it on Finley years ago and LA on Brian Grant.

The league was clear about the fact that the player who it is used on can't play for the team that uses the Amnesty Clause on them again, as long as that team was still paying their salary.

So yeah, cut Kobe so you can piss him off fresh off strengthening his legs again, and let him then sign with Miami, Chicago, or NYK on the Lakers dime. The fans in Los Angeles will revolt and stop paying the ridiculous prices that Buss has charged to see him, the other executives would laugh their behinds off at Mitch, and the networks would carry less games.
