Team ID's for posters

How about posters formally declaring their team and having it posted under their avatar?

Identifying with a team would be required to have posting priviledges in their team forum. It would probably also be a good idea to require a minimum numer of posts (say 1000) to post in a team forum. That would help prevent sock puppets being created to gain posting priviledges. Changing teams would not be permitted, or perhaps just once.

I just think team forums should be for those team's fans without disruption. If a poster really wanted to make a trade proposal, etc., to another team's forum, he could ask a fan of that team to post it.

All posters would still be able to read other team forums.

I think having the team ID would also add color and clarification for posters we might run into and don't know well.

People usually create SIGs and Avy's for their fandom (not all, but quite a few).

While it's a novel idea, it wouldn't work in that form for the long-run IMO. Some posters are bandwagon fans and frequently hop to new Teams. Also, some people are fans of multiple Teams. To limit their movement like that would not be good for activity levels of both them and RealGM as a whole.

I think it is a poor idea all around. Firstly, there would need to be an option for each sport. Being a fan of a team in one city for one sport doesn't mean you are a fan of all that cities sports teams. So there would need to be at least 4 team options available if I wanted to be a fan of the Heat, Canadiens, Falcons, and Steelers for example

Secondly, this would increase the friction between fans of different teams. For example while I am a Heat/Raptors fan first doesn't mean I don't find OKC enjoyable. But going to their forum with a different "tag" would just encourage posters to treat visiting posters in a hostile manner. Do we need to make it any easier to label other posters? We already have ballboys to hate on...

Yeah and i want to keep the fact i support the wolves under wraps. the less people know, the better.

My feeling is bandwagon and multiple team fans really don't deserve team forum access or to be acknowledged as a true fan of that team. They could declare no favorite, but that wouldn't get them into any team forum. I think most true fans aren't interested in the bandwagoners or multiple team types in their forum, anway.

Good point on the multiple sports - hadn't thought of that.

As the OP states, part of the idea is forbidding us from posting in other teams' forums.

That is part of what I disagree with. Some of the most interesting discussions I have had on RealGM have been with fans of different teams. This would force everyone to post on the GB, which is a s**t show already and often has too many people to hold real discussions.

And think of that poor Hornets fan, having to post 1000 times to himself before he could discuss other teams. Could you imagine the state of the Bruins board without visitors?

I don't think members should be banned from posting in other forums simply because they are not fans of the team.

If a fan from another team can come and talk in a polite manner without trolling I have no issue with that at all. As True Warrior Zo said some of the best discussions happen that way.

I think adding a team tag under the users name is an interesting idea though, would help with identifying trolls who can't discuss another team in a normal manner.

Would be weird with a "tag" for every team I like though, and where does it stop? Just with the big 4 sports leagues?

What about soccer and others sports like that where we do have a forum?

LittleOzzy, so modest and thoughtful. He doesn't want to hog all the crazies on his board! He wants them to spread their wings, and get banned on other boards. So go forth crazy Raptors fans and gives them mods some exercise! :razz:

very interesting idea. i think i proposed an idea several months ago about having a tag under your username that identifies you with the board you post the most on. so it could vary.

but having a primary team under your username could be interesting as well. while realgm is most busy with basketball, i know a lot of users like teams of other sports MORE than their basketball team. those sports forums aren't exactly up to par with the basketball portion of the site. perhaps somebody with a steeler, yankee, or chelsea tag would help rejuvenate the nfl, mlb, or soccer side of things, while still visiting their favorite forums on the site.

I think that's what myself, Ozzy and TWZ are getting at. The Tags idea to represent your fandom are great, but the limiting the posting to just your fandom is a bad one IMO.

Many people are a fan of many Teams and this would inhibit them and the discussions on Team Boards because no one outside of the Team fandom could comment.

Also, what would you do when someone changed Teams? And no, IMO calling them a fake fan wouldn't be an excuse (eventhough I agree :lol:

).

Considering how it's pretty much an instant ban if you go on another teams board and say anything objective about there team. You probably should do this.

its a nice idea, except the posting restrictions (post count requirement and must declare a team before you can post on their forum) would limit a lot of discussion between fans of different teams and exclude people from joining the discussion (due to not enough posts)

pretty much the only place new posters could go would be the general board
