Trading Flynn

hoopshype wrote:If Rubio does indeed sign as expected, point guard Jonny Flynn's days in Minnesota are numbered. Sources also indicated to HOOPSWORLD that Flynn is almost sure to be traded in that case with the Toronto Raptors being one of the most probable destinations. There could be some competition for his services as the Charlotte Bobcats and Detroit Pistons could also use some help at the lead guard spot.

Flynn is a first-class individual with incredible character, but he hasn't produced as hoped in Minnesota and Rubio's arrival makes him expendable. At the age of 22 he still has some upside and his price tag is not very high at all.

Funny they're all Eastern Conference teams that wouldn't have seen him play against them very much.

We won't get much return for him.

That's fine. I'd take cap space for him. Any additional picks or whatever would just be a bonus.

The frustrating thing is that he is precisely the type of value-play guy that Kahn would normally target, if we weren't overloaded at the PG position.

High lottery pick? Check
Young? Check
Struggling in his current situation? Check
Wouldn't cost much in trade value? Check

Are there other GM's out there doing value investing?

Toronto or Detroit for a future pick, call it a day.

Would Minnesota still be interested if Randolph was requested with Flynn?

What about a future 1st Round Pick and a 2nd Round Pick this year from the Lakers? The Lakers need a younger and more athletic PG and Flynn would be a great choice as he has experience in the triangle offense but could also be good if they go up tempo depending on who is the next coach.

That's a ton of money to pay a backup. I'd use the cap space on upgrading the starting SG/C spots. Maybe Harris could be spun to another team for something...

I like you're using "future" - we have lots of roster crowding issues. We could use 2nds on euros.

LOL! Maybe he heard my impassioned plea that after 20 proposals from TOR, I couldn't stand to hear the name "Calderon" one more time!

If not, nobody in their right mind wants to pay Calderon $11 mil/year to ride the bench behind Rubio. I don't care that he's Spanish.

I'm asking because if my team (Toronto) traded for Flynn I'd wonder if Randolph could also be included. It seems like Flynn has really low value but I'm not sure what the consensus is on Randolph.

A lot more. Kahn really liked what Randolph showed at the end of last season, and Glen Taylor shelled out $3 mil to get him. Kahn loves the young, lottery pick, high upside players. You'd probably have to overpay.

You might not like the sound of getting Calderon, but he'll only have 2 years leftover on his deal and having a veteran pg who knows how to run a team is a big added bonus to a young point guard. People don't understand how valuable a good backup point guard is.

Flynn was practically the worst player in the NBA last year.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
