Re: 2010-11 Player of the Year thread
This love for Dirk is starting to get really annoying. People are only putting him above certain players because the Dallas Mavericks swept the Los Angeles Lakers.
I like Nowitzki; he's a great player who is playing well in these playoffs. But I feel the reasons why people are elevating him to a certain status are...idiotic.

The Mavs were 2-7 without him in the regular season. I thought he had a great argument for RS MVP. The playoffs validated that argument.

Do you think Derrick Rose was the best player in the NBA this season?

I promise you a lot of people will have him above the likes of Wade/Durant/Howard for this year's POY, maybe even having him be the winner of it.

Not at all. He had a great argument for MVP, but not best player. He was the default MVP. He got overrated because the Bulls defense led them to 62 wins and he wasn't a huge part of that.

So if you grasp that, then why did you use Nowitzki's argument- a legitimate argument- as REG SEA MVP as evidence that Nowitzki is the second best player this year? You know the difference....

I've been in enough of these to know that you're absolutely right.
Rose was my MVP, but I'm really not sure if he's in my top five.

Because Nowitzki was a top 5 regular season player and the best postseason player so far. Plus the gap 1-5 this year is so small that the playoffs are going to decide the best player of the year.

Re: 2010-11 Player of the Year thread
^^^How has Dirk Nowitzki been a superior basketball player to LeBron James or Dwyane Wade or Dwight Howard thus far? Lebron James is playing better than ever before.....
I'm not saying Nowitzki shouldn't be a top five player this year. For me, he's battling Paul, Rose, Bryant and Durant for the fourth and fifth spots, and his great postseason has really helped his case. But above Howard, James and Wade? That's a tough sell.

If IF the Bulls win the title, Rose is the POY, no question. Whenever you get league mvp and win the title the same year you are the POY.

Leaning towards James, Howard, Rose, Wade and Nowitzki or Durant. Probably Durant. We'll see how this series turns out.

For the record, the statistical gap between Dirk and Terry in the PS is smaller than that of Wade and Lebron.

Not really. There's like an 8% difference between the two in usage rate. Dirk's clearly carrying a far heavier offensive load for the Mavs, while LeBron/Wade are just about even.

You're right, I forgot to take that into consideration. But my point is, people are putting Dirk on a pedestal by arguing that he got so far without much help, without realizing that Terry has been playing the best playoff basketball of his career thus far by a comfortable margin.

Dirk "fell" a lot in the past week simply because he hasn't played. If the Mavs win, expect the hype to be back. Recency bias will cause havoc in the voting for this thing if it's done right after the Finals. Waiting even a couple months will do a lot of good, I think.

Re: 2010-11 Player of the Year thread
for me dirk and rose are going to be heavily affected in poybased on what happens in the post season for different reasons:
rose: hes so young, its impossible to rate him as its happening for me. you need to look back when hes done for the year and then rate him. if he wins mvp, fmvp this year he is no doubt for me the poy. that is a massive accomplishment and for me would be insurmountable by anyone if it happened. if he doesnt, he has no chance at being #1 poy this year.
dirk: hes so old, a lot of people including me thought he was toooo old and wearing down. his post seaosn so far has proven that he still has it. like rose, if he wins fmvp i would arguably have him #1...not definitely but i think he would edge out whoever was #2
durant: westbrook for me is killing the durant train. its as simple as that at this point.
lebron/wade: for me right now they are at or near the top of my ever changing poy rankings. if okc won the title, i think one of these two would be my poy baring something amazing from durant.
current rankings:
1. lebron (steady)
2. wade (steady, close to #1)
3. rose (rising)
4. dirk (rising)
5. durant (steady)
playoffs for me weigh extremely heavily in rankings. to me in the playoffs there is no chance someone is cruising along...you are showing what your made of for all to see. in the event of a close ranking or a tie, in my books the regular season is then taken into consideration.

Re: 2010-11 Player of the Year thread
Dwight was my #1 during the RS, and frankly, he was still great in the playoffs. His eff/diff was insane. At this point, only Rose can catch him if he leads the Bulls to a title.
I also don't get all the Wade love in this thread. Wade was All-NBA 2nd team, deffered way too much for much of the season, and basically didn't have the impact of the other top guys. If POY is about actual play this season and not just who people think are the better players, then Wade isn't Top 5.

He was the best SG of the season. That's got to count for something.
