Time For Kareem's Statue...It's Been Long Enough

Post#1 » by DEEP3CL » Wed May 18, 2011 11:32 pm

This has been on my mind for awhile now, the Lakers OWE Kareem his statue period. This man single handedly saved Laker basketball in the 70's and is more than responsible for 5 of those banners hanging on the Staple Center's walls.

Time for Doc Buss to do what's right and honor Cap with his.......beginning next season. I will be emailing and writing a letter to the Lakers PR department on this real soon. Who's with me ?

Of course he deserves it, i don't necessarily agree that its "long overdue' but he deserves a statue nonetheless. With that being said, he needs to stop complaining about not having one. It'll come.

I'll support it

The Lakers already told him that he's next in line, what is he complaining about? And who cries about getting a statue built for them, bit of an ego on him.

I'm cool with him getting it, but wasn't he a Buck for a while? not that it should matter, but he can wait. now if we can start a take down that monstrosity of a De la Hoya one down then I will be at the forefront of that battle.

Yeah snaq he was a Buck for the first 6 years of his career, but like I said he single handedly save the Lakers. Jack Kent Cooke traded for Kareem and signed him to one of the highest extensions at the time in 1975. My guess is West and Magic got theirs before him because they only played their whole career with the Lakers.

No Disrespect to the game of Hockey or Boxing but,
Kareem deserved to have his statue built before Wayne The Great and
The Golden Boy IMO. Or at least around the same time.

Cap's more of a L.A Legend than both of them for what he accomplished with the Late Great John Wooden at UCLA(3 National Titles) and Pat Riley and the 80's Lakers (5 NBA Championships).

Let's also not forget his contributions as a Championship Mentor to our current bigs.

Kareem successfully fought off cancer recently.
He's got to be feeling great with a new appreciation for life nowadays.

Ain't nothing wrong with wanting to be remembered.
An for Kareem's legacy it's definitely Sky High like his shot.

Should he probably have one? I guess - only BB related statue at Staples where you can debate who should have had it first is Magic. Completely classless way of going about it though. Makes it hard to be on his side.

Kareem went on twitter. He also said it isn't even about the statue (which he deserves) but about being disrespected by management (buss family member), the statue was just the straw that broke the camel's back it seems. He is going to be on Mike and Mike to tell all according him, this morning.

This reminds me of when Kobe, Phil, Rambis, and Jeanie all went in public media rage mode in the summer of 07 because of Jim Buss.

Bill Russell is getting his statue after 40 years. Laker immortal Jerry West waited 37 years for his statue. My wait has only been 22 yrs.

Rumor has it that I will be getting a statue. A caveat for all my fans-don't hold your breath. Lakers don't care about me.

The only reason I endure is because of all the support I get from Laker fans everywhere I go. Thanks to all for your appreciation.

@Kim__Brooke Kim, an insult is an insult. If I didn't speak up no one would know how I feel about this. Thanks for your support! #KAJ33

@lukehagfors No tears just an oppty to state how I feel about the way things are. Justice deferred is justice denied. #KAJ33

@realjazz2011 Re the Buss Family, I don't if you can be sure about that! #KAJ33

@heyAndrew What prompted me has been a steady diet of disrespect from the supposedly wonderful Laker family. see Sporting News for the story

@lukehagfors No tears just an oppty to state how I feel about the way things are. Justice deferred is justice denied. #KAJ33

@MovieViral A slight is a slight. There is no bitterness. Laker fans have always let me know that they appreciated me. That is sufficient.

Lakers Fans are top shelf and I thank you for remembering my contributions as a player and as a coach. I love you all! #KAJ33

@EverythingLaker Should we mention the straw that broke the camels back ?

. Its not about a getting a statue because I'm over it - its about RESPECT! Lakers have given me the absolute minimum of respect. #KAJ33

Smart_Suzie I don't think at this point this can be rectified as this is the first time I have ever made my feelings public. Moving on.

Perhaps the Lakers not only feel one needs to be an HOF'er to have a jersey retired at Staples but a life-time Laker (unlike Kareem who only played 70% of his career in LA) to get a statue.

Kareem and Shaq deserve one equally ... not sure if either will get one.

They've already said KAJ is next. Hard to argue Chick deserving his - 40 years as the Laker voice. Coined the terms airball and slam dunk. Plus he's dead.

That made me laugh.

Shaq had 3 rings, but he had perhaps the worst breakup it was and alienated Kobe, all 3 Busses, Phil, Fisher, Horry, Van Exel, West, Jones, Fox, and others during his stay, exit, and there after. Shaq managed to not only create a moat between him and the franchise, but a ring of fire around said moat as well

Staples is incomplete without a statue of KAJ in his sky-hook form.

Kareem is insulted and I don't blame him, I think he can live with west and magic getting a statue before him but the fact that Hoya has one before him is a flat out insult.

But (and I don't know the answer) do the Lakers own the Staple's Center? It's not necessarily their choice as to who gets a statue.

De La Hoya was an AEG thing, not a Lakers thing.
