When it happened to me I made them lay off real quick and it never turned into anything major, but I do know this one guy who wound up getting into a fight after a gay guy tried to go after him.

Maybe the ugly mofos out there don't care since it usually doesn't concern them, but it does happen.

Well I'm sure it happens. It's happened to me before but I just take it like an ugly girl trying to pick me up. I just be nice and break off when I get a chance. He just made it seem like something is definitely going down if a he's in a room with a gay guy in it. Gay guys have standards too.

No didn't mean it as if gay people dont have standards. All I said was, I hope I'm not their next "target." The possibilty of that happening could be 1 in 1000000000. All I meant was that I hope that it won't happen to me.

Look, I have a mate who is bisexual. It doesnt really bother me too much. Sure, the idea of a dude and a dude really creeps me out a bit, but thats just how some people choose to live their life. I'm not going to stop them.

First of all, this is somewhat newsworthy. It's not as if there are many openly gay people in the NBA, either as executives or as players. In fact, he's the only one I can think of besides the retired Amechi. So, given it's uniqueness, and the fact that this is a continuing discussion in the area of civil rights / civil acceptance / and sociology at both a societal and sub-cultural level, yes, it is newsworthy.

No, I don't thinke he's being an attention whore. He's always been a consumate professional within the NBA. Trying to be an example to other people who are where you used to be is a positive. I would say it's not that different from a minority CEO going and giving talks at schools like the ones he or she grew up in.

As far as "he's waving it in our faces", well, I wave my heterosexual nature around all the time. I talk about my wife and kids all the time. I take them to events, whether company sponsored or just in public. I discuss our past with people. I am not trying to hide who I am. I don't think it is fair in the slightest for Welts to spend his whole life not being seen in public, or not sitting at games with his partner, or pointedly avoiding mentioning his partner to anyone in any conversations. Being open about your partner in the same way I am open about having a wife and kids is not "waving it around".

As for the "gay guys are coming for me" stuff... no they're not. Firstly, being raped by a gay guy is pretty rare outside of prison. Secondly, most gay men I know are pretty careful about hitting on people whose sexual orientation they are unsure of. Straight guys make tons of VERY unsuccessful passes on women who couldn't be less interested, but most people are willing to accept "that's just part of life" rather than labeling all hetero men as uncontrollable rapist sexual savages, or even saying a lot of them are. It is very much the exception rather than the rule.

As far as "gay people aren't suffering like black people," true, there wasn't Jim Crow or slavery. However, given the small number gays compared with the much larger number of black people in the US, gays suffer a disproportionate number of hate crimes (i.e.a gay person is several times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than a black person).

http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/hc2009/victims.html

The numbers for members of the transgender community are way worse, but are not broken out from the FBI statistics.

http://www.thetaskforce.org/downloads/reports/reports/ntds_full.pdf

Based on these statistics, I think it clearly illustrates the need for public awareness of the issue. So even if Rick Welts was "waving it around", it's probably a public benefit anyway.

 Besides the she-men hanging out on Van Buren, when was the last time you were legitimately a "target" of a gay man?

Some people just think that because there are gays and you are a guy, suddenly you become a target.

Just like how Jessica Alba is a woman and I'm a guy, suddenly I'm her target 8-)

Nice one -

If anything, I would think any unwanted advances men are subjected to would be a good reminder that women don't particularly enjoy those kind of clumsy and persistent hits either ... No means no right?

I spent a ton of time - years - living in the West End of vancouver, which has the highest population of gay men outside of SF, and playing music in the punk/art scene on the West Coast and I can tell you honestly the number of times I ever saw a gay man hitting on an unreceptive straight guy can be counted on one hand. If anything the number of straight guys who seemed verrrry interested was more notable

Those stats can be decieving. Anyone who punches a guy and calls him a "f*g" these days can be charged for a hate crime.

Well said Worm

Our society still has a long way to go. I know of a local doctor who was 'forcefully' outed and it almost cost him his practice. In the course of public discussions, many were as upset by his secrecy as by his sexual preference, gays included. In the end, though, he of course received support from the homosexual community and their friendlies.
(no pun intended 8-) oops ... did it again... damn me)

Fine line to walk for those balancing two lives.

TheJohnWallShow wrote:That was a pretty uneducated way of twisting what I meant, but not everyone can comprehend. Ill give you a pass on this one. Trying to tie my head around how a FO employee of the Suns posting an article out of nowhere coming out of the closet is standing up for yourself. Blacks, jews and women are on completely different levels, if you dont see that then you must have a mental block somewhere. Standing up for yourself would be if someone came at you personally. Like if another NBA employee were to come out and call him out for being gay, then I can see the need to come out with an article. Otherwise, this came out of left field.

Lets put it this way, people hate on guys who wear pink all the time. In the NBA nobody wears pink! OMG!! I feel the need to stand up for myself and tell the world I enjoy wearing pink, to spread awareness to others who enjoy to wear the color pink proudly. Do you see where im going with this, its a non story. People are going to hate all the time, deal with it and learn to love yourself for what you are without making a public facade about it. I know plenty of gay people and most of them are happy with their lives as it is, and dislike the people who constantly make a big deal out of being gay, because it just keeps the issue on haters minds around the world. If youre gay- wonderful, if youre straight- awesome. What is the positive outcome about this guy coming out of the closet to the world? That more gay guys in the NBA will too? Is that the intended goal? This is just dumb, and if your response includes calling me homophobic, hater ect ect, re read all my posts and use your brain.

So gays dont deal with the same hatred that blacks or jews have encountered in the past, as they are more in line with people who get bashed for wearing pink shirts.

Because we beat people to death who wear pink shirts, and tie them to stakes and burn them, or drag them from the back of our trucks.

The more you talk the more of an idiot you make yourself out to be. I suggest you stop. Seriously. Don't type anymore. You have large paragraphs and nothing worth reading. Consider another avenue to waste your time. Perhaps finger painting or petty theft.

You belong to the only class of people that deserve to be hated - ignorant idiots. There are idiots out there that admit they are idiots and simply dont have the cognitive capacity to improve themselves, so they are humble about it. Then there are people who are idiots but are truly confident that they know what they're doing. This is where you fit in. Too bad there will never be a pride parade or civil rights movement for your kind, you are doomed to be hated your entire life, and I am ok with that.

You're all about equal rights and this and that yet you're trying to get someone you disagree with to shut up. Yeah, that's not hypocritical or anything.

"Intelligence police", as if you get to dictate.

WTFsunsFTW, just because I see things from a different perspective, you are going to try to insult me. Very mature..Im open minded and support peoples right to being gay. You are closed minded, and would rather spend your time trying to belittle me. Truth is, you're about as ignorant as people get and im sure most people on this board would agree.

Personally, no I dont beat people to death, burn them or drag them behind my truck because im a civilized person, and I could care less about dumb parades.

Next time you decide to have a hissy fit, dont post your garbage here please.

I know a black man when I see one... as I know a woman when I see one.... an oriental, etc.... but often I 'assume' if someone is gay. Many times I am sure I have no idea someone is gay. Not all wear tutus and sprinkle glitter. It sure would be easier that way (the identification process that is). People look at me and say 'Hippy'.... yup... I'm outta that hipster closet I am.

It all gets a big who cares in my book. But to say this is a non issue is merely an opinion. Just as the comparison and quest for similarities of racist acts against different 'minorities' is. Gawd Damn.... I am a minority... in Manilla. I am sure I do not fully understand the pressures of living in a society where the color of your skin or social/religious/sexual preferences receive biased treatments. All I know is I got pulled over a heck of a lot more when I was driving my VW bus around, and I dont think it had anything to do with my plastic Jesus. What a long strange trip it's been.

'Racist' is an easy label to fling. It just doesnt always stick.

i like how so many people categorize being gay as "so you like to bang dudes... who cares?"... as if who/what you have sex with is the only difference between being gay and straight. There's so much more to someone's sexual orientation than what goes on in the bedroom.

The things about "just looking for attention" are hilarious. I think someone else pointed it out... waiting until you are around 50 after keeping it secret the entire rest of your life before saying anything about it is hardly "Gimme attention!!!!!".

Also... the dude lost someone super important in his life. And he couldn't really speak about it to anyone. Not in a way that would have been accepted. Maybe he wanted to contribute to the movement that WILL allow himself, and others, to be open and honest when things like that happen.

DRK wrote:I really dont care at all. Makes no difference to me if the Suns Team CEO is gay, or some random guy across the road is gay. just hope that I'm not their next "target."

Also... this really sorta got to me, and I don't know if anyone's said anything about it, since I stopped reading the thread right around there. Most gay people want nothing to do with a straight person as a potential relationship. People thinking that gays "target" people is ridiculous. That sounds more like something a straight rapist does with a girl he's been looking at.

Meh. This is what I didn't want. Now every **** time some stupid gay controversy sports distraction nonsense happens like with the Noah thing, the Suns and Welts are going to be involved. Distractions.

Has absolutely no place at the workplace or in the media.

"Not in a way it would have been accepted" Sounds like you have very little faith in humanity and assume the majority of people are gay haters. But playing the victim cards seems to be working well these days. I know just as many people who accept gay people as are homophobic. Sounds like Welts has some self conscious issues to me. If people dont like gay people, they also have a right to feel that way. Not everyone is the same, although some much more ignorant and not as accepting as others. Cant force feed people different beliefs though. Its not like gay people are being beaten into submission, they have just about the same rights as the rest other than marriage.
