Future of the Nets
J Kiddy is back. This summer might be whack. But, once again I am going to repeat what I said. I think we will be fine.
The Nets are not in panic mode now. We will have the nicest arena in the world as our home base in a few months. We have a top 3 PG in the world running our show (the best passing PG in the league). We will sign a few free agents including AK47. We will have a solid playoff team in place before February rolls around. Dwight will be leaving O-Town.
The main issue is this. Orlando will realize they have to move Dwight instead of letting him pull a Lebron or Bosh. The Nets will be in a valuable position for Dwight. They will be able to trump the Lakers in regards to his next 5-7 years. Kobe will be done in 3 years... and by season 3 will be just a marginal NBA player. Deron Williams is on the way up. Dwight can demand to go to NJ in a sign and trade deal. He can do as Melo did but in a less bitchy and more straightfoward of a manner. The Nets can unload everyone except Deron, Brook, Hump, and Morrow and Dwight can demand that too. He'd much rather go to a team that is stronger than weeker. The Nets can give up plenty of expirings, $3 mill, several picks, and a few young players IF THE MAGIC are in this horrible position. This might very well happen one week before the deadline when other teams are going to give up more for Dwight (maybe the Lakers or Knicks) and Dwight tells them he will not go to any team but the Nets and will not sign and extension with any team but the Nets and both the Lakers and Knicks demand he does.
Let's see how this plays out.
Imagine this squad:
Deron Williams
Morrow/Jamal Crawford/JR SMith
Ak47
Lopez
Howard
6th man Hump
Justin Harper
Malcom Lee

While Deron is undoubtedly top 3 PG, he is not the best passing PG in the league. That would still be Steve Nash.

this is fail...
how can you even get howard without giving up lopez? when lakers will probably include bynum.....
plus right now lakers are the favorites to land howard right now. especially because howard wants to go to warm weather town.

Re: Future of the Nets
Wow, you are excited that the Nets are going to sign AK47 but say that Kobe is going to be a marginal player in a couple years? AK47 has been just that for the past few years, so how is he supposed to help turn the Nets into playoff contenders and attract players like Howard? And they will sign JR Smith AND Jamaal Crawford? They are both serious 6th man of the year material that play the same position, its not a good idea to have both because they will demand minutes and just create negative energy and situations on the team. And on top of that, the Nets are going to bring in Dwight Howard without giving up Lopez??? I think the most realistic plan is to try and nab Nene, either Mayo, JR Smith, or Crawford, trade for J Smoove and Dwight.
Williams
Mayo
Smoove
Nene
Howard
Ok looking at that, not sure how the money would work. Maybe they would have to take pay cuts like they did in Miami.

Re: Future of the Nets
Actually I just looked it up and Mayo isnt a free agent until 2013, dont know why I thought otherwise... Just replace Mayo with JR Smith. Or sign Thaddeus Young and move him to the 2.

Re: Future of the Nets
Guys,
Let's clear a few things up.
1) Deron now vs. an old but still great Nash - Deron might have the edge now in best passing PG in Assists per game or IS VERY CLOSE
2) When someone writes "Morrow/JR Smith/Jamal Crawford" - that means ONE OF THEM!!
3) The reason Dwight might come to the Nets on the cheap is HE WANTS TO GO TO BROOKLYN AND PLAY ALONGSIDE DERON - Kobe is an all-time great (guy who responded angrily). But, Kobe is on 40 year old wheels and knees now. He can't do the things he used to. Dwight would not be going to a team on the up. It would be a team in LA on the downswing since KOBE is the LAKE SHOW now.
You have to think logically and years ahead of today when you sign a 6 or 7 year deal! Kobe will be retired by year 3 or 4 (or be irrelevant). Age forces players to retire. It happened to Jordan. It will happen to Kobe in before Dwight's contract ends. But, the Nets can bring in players with Deron (about decade younger than Kobe and All-NBA talent) that are good pieces such as AK-47 and young players).
If the Nets did not have a top 10 player (some argue top 4/5), picks to move, millions to spend, the nicest arena in the NBA, and an owner and GM willing to do whatever it takes to win, I would say the Nets didn't have a shot. But, add all of that up with the move to Brooklyn as well as Dwight's desire to play with Deron AND ORLANDO not being able to take a Lebron like hit... Dwight can control this situation (see above) and this is plausible.

While Deron is undoubtedly top 3 PG, he is not the best passing PG in the league. That would still be Jason Kidd.

Let's make this simple...
Best passing PG other than Nash and Kidd (who are both 40).
Deron is 26!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Future of the Nets
JK I think your roster moves are slightly unrealistic since I doubt AK is signing for the min so we can't afford Howard, Lopez plus other guys like Hump and a SG.
I think if we went into next year with a lineup like this we will be a 4-7 seed team (barring health).
D-WIll/Farmar/Gaines
Morrow/Vujacic (for cheap)
AK/James/Outlaw
Hump/Outlaw/Wright
Lopez/Draft pick/Petro
Maybe we pull a deal for Mayo with Farmar, S&T'ed Vujacic, and/or the LAL 1st.
We do those moves we'll be in good position to make the playofffs and eventually make a play for Dwight.

You are out of your mind. That is the same team from this year but with AK47. The Nets were 13 games out of 8th this year how does he help the Nets win 13-15 more ball games? And to get to the 4th seed the Nets would need to win somewhere around 45-46, which is a 23 win increase..... not happening by just adding Kirilenko. I realize they only had Deron for half a season, but that team is not winning 45 games. Realisticly they could make 7th or 8th theres just not enough talent unless Lopez decides to step it up significantly. Also Deron isnt signing the extension with that roster.

Re: Future of the Nets
Hell naw to AK-47, unless he comes with a Russian discount, which is REALLY doubtful even then we have more important positions to fill. AK-47 will end up just being a surplus to our requirements.
Secondly, no way we get Howard without trading Brook.

Re: Future of the Nets
Going into next year I say we have a few nice building blocks to work with, two of which address the 2 most important positions in basketball.
1.) Elite PG that makes his teammates better and is a team leader. Can be closer at end of games.
2.) Excellent scoring big man and solid defensive low post presence. A piece that many teams in the league lack.
3.) One of the top rebounding power-forwards in the game and also a glue guy who does the little things that help teams win.
4.) Deadly sharpshooter. One of the game's best in fact.
5.) Solid backup PG who can also shoot, which allows him to share the floor with the regular starting point guard
Right now I see us as 5 deep when it comes to quality players that would be on a championship contender. I think we need to fill 4 more roles to be in the playoffs next year
1.) A starting quality SF who does a bit of everything (score, rebound, pass, defense, etc.)
2.) Lockdown wing defender to body up the game's elite perimeter scorers (in the mold of Sefolosha, Artest, Battier, etc.)
3.) Quality backup bigman who's game is about defense and rebounding (like Marcin Gortat when he played for Orlando)
4.) Another G/F who can come off the bench and score buckets. Someone who brings energy when the starters are out of the game or someone you can put on the floor with the starters to give them a boost (ala Jason Terry, Ben Gordon, JR Smith, etc.)
Depth, defense and at least 1 superstar has been a prereq for the past couple of championship teams, filling those 4 needs would be a nice start towards accomplishing that final goal.
