Everybody needs to chill ... I was as hard on Mike Brown as anyone when I heard about the Lakers interest in this guy, however ... it is a fact the guy can coach defense, was the assistant coach for the Spurs title team in '03, was the assistant coach when Ron won his only DPOY award, took over a horrible cavs team and lead them to the Finals in just his 2nd season as head coach (by the way, that cavs team was one of the worst to ever make the Finals and was lead by a kid who should have been a senior in college ... that is solid coaching at the very least), won the coach of the year in 2009, lead the Cavs to the best record in the league his last two years as coach with a far inferior roster to the Lakers, and has NEVER had a losing regular season or playoff season record, the epitomy of a "winner" ... Charlie Sheen would be proud.
Honestly if those were the specs on a coach like McMillan, Tibbs or Monty Williams we would probably all be thrilled with the signing and none of those guys have done jack compared to Mike Brown. Just about any team would be thrilled with a Tibbs hiring but when comparing him to Brown, Brown beats him in spades. They both have one title as an assitant coach and both coached one DPOY, but Tibbs has just one year of head coaching experience and is about to lead his top seeded Bulls to a crushing 1-4 series loss to the Heat ... Brown lead a suck team to the Finals and later had back to back "best record in basketball seasons".
Everyone should understand this is a quality coach, quality person and quality hire. Do I think Rick Adelman would have been a better hire? Yes I do. Would I be upset if I learned that the Lakers made an offer to Brown before Adelman or that they made a better offer to Brown instead of Adelman? Yes I will. However, do I think Brown is a quality coach, person and hire who can help lead us back to the Finals and winning a ring? Yup, I do.
Besides Mike Brown also happens to own the Cleveland Browns, swam for Canada at the 2008 Olympics and is the current mayor of Grand Forks, North Dakota ... can't beat that
