What is Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings right now? Has he been unhappy with ownership over the unstable nature of the Kings potential move or the financial restraints he has to work under?
According to a reporter here in Portland, the Blazers have him on their short-list as a candidate for the new GM. It seems as though Petrie's name has popped up every time the Blazers have had a GM vacancy ever since they fired John Nash, so I seriously doubt the Blazers have any shot at him. But I was curious if any fracture had developed between Petrie and Kings ownership or if he could be lured away with a large bag of cash.

GP always will be linked to the blazers given there history together. However it doesn't seem GP has even considered it. He genuinely seems to want to be here and finish what he started.
Geoff is more motivated by class and integrity than money.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
Here is what the Maloofs said before any contract negotiation started back in 2009:
He signed an extension for 3 more years. But the general sentiment hasn't change so far. As far as I know, Petrie is a Kings for life until he says so. Right now, Petrie is doing a fine job for us. The Kings will have maximum cap flexibility for the second consecutive season. He nailed most of his draft selections (Cousins, Evans, Casspi), and has been pretty good on trades (Landry for Thornton & Nocioni/Hawes for Dally!!). The Kings team is on the rise and Petrie will be the major architect for this.
Petrie is the GM that most teams would love to have. He is intelligent, witty and possess a calm demeanor. Essentially, the anti-Kahn of GMs
He is the longest-tenured GM in the NBA (17 years).
If there was a Mt. Rushmore version of the Sacramento Kings, Petrie would be one of the first people that gets his face etched in stone!
"If he wants to be back, he'll be back," Maloof told the Sacramento Bee. "We've got such a great relationship with Geoff. We'll just sit down at the right time and do it.
"But as I mentioned and Joe mentioned, he can be a King for life as far as we're concerned. As far as we're concerned, we don't need a contract."

If he leaves it's because he wants to go and the Maloofs won't stand in his way. That's it.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
Ah, wondered when the "Petrie to Portland" stuff would pop up! Every freaking time they cut loose on their GM his name mysteriously appears. Bottom line is, Petrie is under contract for at least the next year so unless he REALLY, REALLY wanted to go to Portland and the Maloofs were OK to let him out of his contract it ain't happening.
However, if he were to split, the time to pick up someone else to take the reigns would be now, before the team has exasperated it's flexibility. Kevin Pritchard maybe? Anyway, as said, I doubt Petrie would leave now because he's finally ready to put the finishing touches on this team whereas Portland has a lot of questions moving forward and has a pretty rough salary cap situation.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
I doubt seriously that Petrie would even give thought to returning to Portland to work for an owner who's already forced him out the door once because that owner only listened to bad advice from a back-stabbing idiot (Bob Whitsitt). Paul Allen and Vulcan still have a habit of over-meddling in day-to-day operations and (worse) seem to be still eager to take bad advice. Can't see that as a situation that would be all that attractive to Petrie.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
Despite the brilliant trade for Gerald Wallace which turned their season around, they still released Cho. KIE hit the nail in the head, why would Petrie (or anyone) want to work for Allen?
Petrie seems committed to the Kings anyway, and thankfully one of the few good things the Maloofs have done is remain committed to Petrie.

I don't understand why everyone thinks he is a god. He had some good years, but lately he hasn't impressed me. 24 wins would get most gm's fired. They don't have an all star caliber player on the roster.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
Well thanks for bumping this thread just to say that. Great post, chap.
Anyway, I'd argue the Kings do have all-star caliber players, but that those players just aren't all-star caliber yet.

Who? Evans? Cousins? Until I see a guy like Monta Ellis make it to an all star games those guys never will. I really like Evans, but to have plantar fasciitis at his age is a huge concern. Cousins has a long way to go. His attitude scares me and he has a lot of growing up to do. I hope Petrie has something up his sleeve for next season or they will be last in the west.

Re: Geoff Petrie's status with the Kings
It's not that huge of a concern. There's no reason PF has to be an often recurring thing for Tyreke. Plenty of people get it and then never get it again.
And of course neither is all-star caliber now. Not at all. Most players their age aren't. The point is they have the talent to be, and simply saying "They're not good right now so we don't have good players" is very short-sighted. We have talent. It's just young and developing still.
