posey gets taken out at plate, need rule change?

Post#1 » by Pharmcat » Thu May 26, 2011 2:54 pm

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/vide ... id=8879100

does this need to be addressed via new rules....I mean that runner made no attempt to touch the plate, he just went in on to take out posey

I think this whole blocking the plate business needs to be looked at

What are they gunna do... throw a penalty flag?

Collisions at home plate are part of the game. The only thing worth a punishment, a la ejection or fine/suspension is a cleats-up slide.

Gotta ask yourself how many home plate collisions happen during the week? 2-3? If that? Seems like the only time this gets addressed is when someone gets hurt, i.e. Josh Hamilton and now Posey.

What rule could possibly be devised for this situation? If the ball beats you, you're out? Screw that. Players have been charging the plate for over 100 years and because one guy breaks his leg they want to change the rule? Awesome.

Make sure Ray Fosse is on the Committee for Catcher's Safety, he'll make sure nothing bad happens to a catcher ever again.

This has been happening since the 70s too. Pete Rose was famous for tackling catchers. It's ingrained in baseball, you just can't take that away because someone got hurt. If this happened to Russell Martin, would anyone care?

player safety is paramount

my problem with it is that player made no attempt to score (ie touch the plate)...he deviated from his running on one side of the foul line to the other side for the sole purpose of taking out the catcher

I agree with you, those injuries are brutal and shouldn't happen.

You'd also have to address the double play and issues at 2nd base...cause a lot of injuries happen there too.

And other runners do make that attempt? When a guy charges the catcher he aims to bowl through the guy then touch the plate. It's like that all the time.

and I disagree with it...if you run into the catcher trying to score thats fine, but when you run into catcher making no attempt to touch the plate, its wrong....check the picture on the SF giant board, the guy is totally not going for the plate

I wonder what Ray Fosse's opinion about this would be?
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability
