Running a system similar to the early decade Spurs

Post#1 » by Jajwanda » Thu May 26, 2011 7:34 am

Hey guys, with the recent Mike Brown hire I wanted to hear a little bit about the offense you guys ran while Duncan was a 2nd year guy and Robinson was still around. Apparently the Lakers will be running something similar. What do you need and how effective is it?

Duncan's 2nd year? That was 98-99, the lockout year.

I believe Avery was running the point and Robinson was still somewhat in his prime. From memory it was pretty simple: dump into Robinson or TD and let them go to work. Failing that, wait for the double team and kick out to the open man, in this case Elliott, Elie, Jaren Jackson etc. At that time both twin towers commanded double teams, meaning long range shooters had a field day.

It will be weird to see the Lakers move away from the triangle offense, and I'll be interested to see how Brown and the Lakers fit moving forward.

So basically P and R, post the two big men constantly, and if someone closes out on the shooter attack the paint. Doesn't take geniuses, just decent basketball players with all around games. Steve Blake could fit is what I'm saying.

Yeah, Blake might actually have a role next season, rather than looking like a deer in headlights trying to fit himself into Phil's triangle offense.

That pretty much sums it up. But I don't know how its going to work with the core group of players the Lakers have. Neither Fisher or Blake are really P and R guys and having Artest spoting up from 3 all the time just isn't a good idea.

Yeah, opening up for shooters is okay if you actually have them...who on the Lakers can shoot from deep?

Steve Blake?

And apparently Brown is trying to get Malone and Kuester to join him in LA. I've always liked Malone as an assistant but i'm not so sure about Kuester after what happened to him in Detriot, plus he hasn't even been canned yet.

What i'm interested in seeing is whether Kobe can accept playing second fiddle to the bigs.

Duncan's 2nd year, he was the first scoring option. Let's say that's what Gasol is.

Bynum will act like Robinson if you really want to utilize that size advantage.

So Kobe drops to third? IMO, if Kobe can accept that, it'll be best for the team. But I just don't see it happening.

The other question is ofcourse lack of 3 point shooting. That will be interesting to see. Plus, I remember in 99, our defense was incredible. Sure, Gasol and Bynum can give them that size, but I just don't think they protect the rim better than Duncan and Robinson did. And LA has got to be quicker when it comes to perimeter defense.

Nevertheless, I still think even with all that, LA will be among the top teams in the West. Offense may not be as good (Mike Brown isn't a very good offensive coach), but I'm sure the defense will get better.

I really don't think Kobe could handle not being option #1.

Kobe would sooner lose as option 1 than win as anything less than that. That's a fact.
