FIFA Bribery Scandal

Post#1 » by 5DOM » Sun May 29, 2011 12:03 am

Timeline of the **** that's going on: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... eline.html

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... arner.html

Revealed: Fifa 's top secret bribery files on Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner

Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner offered up to $1million (£600,000) in cash bribes to Caribbean football officials for their votes in the Fifa presidential election, according to explosive witness statements at the heart of the corruption inquiry into world football’s three most senior power brokers.

....

A defiant Warner said yesterday a “football tsunami” would hit Fifa this week and claimed he would not care if his association with the body comes to an end.

He said: “You will see a football tsunami that will hit Fifa and the world that will shock you. I have been here for 29 consecutive years and if the worst happens, the worst happens.

"If that is what it comes to, so be it, you must never get too attached to anything. They can do what they want, it doesn’t bother me.”

And the latest?

Bin Hammam withdraws from the race!

It saddens me that standing up for the causes that I believed in has come at a great price – the degradation of FIFA’s reputation. This is not what I had in mind for FIFA and this is unacceptable.

I cannot allow the name that I loved to be dragged more and more in the mud because of competition between two individuals.

The game itself and the people who love it around the world must come first.

It is for this reason that I announce my withdrawal from the presidential election.

I will not put my personal ambition ahead of FIFA’s dignity and integrity.

Besides, I believe my candidacy has been a catalyst for debate within FIFA and has brought change to the top of the agenda.

I hope the tsunami hits Blatter too.

Breaking news: Bin Hammam has just given up, citing "personal reasons". It is rumored that he is afraid of the upcoming tell-all book by Jack Warner (CEO of the failed WC-2022-in-England bid) which is reported to be an "honest depiction of the corruption, bribery and nepotism for which the FIFA stands for nowadays", featuring Bin Hammam in an extremely negative light. Also, the Swiss government is examining a recent 20m donation from Sepp Blatter to Interpol (?!), which is hard to explain.

Short term, Blatter is the winner, his re-election seems 100%. But long term, Platini may be the winner, because he is not part of the "corrupt old men" system (Blatter, Bin Hammam, Hayatou etc.). But to be fair, the sponsors also share a lot of blame. Coca Cola, Adidas, McDonalds etc. could EASILY call for more transparency by withholding their money, but they prefer to look the other way: soccer is the best way to sell more lemonade, shoes and burgers.

Anyway, the FIFA seems about as credible as Lehman Brothers. :-?

Corporations don't make ethical decisions, they produce revenue.

yep, it's not adidas job to make that tournaments are distributed fairly.

the whole idea of a revote for 2018 is really interesting to me, though i doubt there's any chance it happens

This is going to get a lot more interesting before it's over, I feel.

Warner is pissed, and he plans on taking people down with him:

Glad Nick Xenophon's on the case. Hopefully there are some more substantial accusations against Blatter in the works.

It's good to see that this is snowballing in general. More and more people are demanding decisive action, and more and more people with evidence against those at the top of FIFA seem to be coming out of the woodwork. I don't think it will be long until someone has something on Blatter that he can't wriggle out of.

I'm just surprised that they still plan on going ahead with their "election", despite the fact that both candidates have been accused of wrong-doing and abusing their position, and one of said candidates has now withdrawn. It's an absolute farce.

Blatter: No evidence received from Sunday Times, so no action on bribery allegations against Qatar 2022
