New Orleans Hornets grant Lakers permission to interview lead assistant Mike Malone: http://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2 ... laker.html

The New Orleans Hornets have granted the Lakers permission to interview Mike Malone for an assistant job on newly hired Mike Brown's staff, according to league sources.

Prior to the joining the Hornets, Malone spent five seasons as an assistant on Brown's staff with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brown is seeking to hire assistants that he's work with before.

Malone, who could not be reached for comment Saturday, is considered a defensive mastermind and was instrumental in helping the Hornets emerge as one of the top defensive teams in the league.

i agree...

Monty Williams and Mike Malone would be great assistants for our team, but Kuester shouldnt even be considered. Kuester has no buisness being on a sideline, much less the Lakers sideline.

what happened to MB and getting Ettore Messina & Tim Grgurich to the Lakers?

Wait we're supposedly getting Monty Williams too? WT has it said as:

Brown has contacted New Orleans Hornets coach Monty Williams to express his interest in having Hornets assistant Michael Malone join him in Los Angeles

Which means that we're interested in Malone, not Williams. And yeah wtf is going on Kuester shouldn't be anywhere near this team.

As long as Ettore Messina is still coming I could give two s****.

Why would John Kuester EVER be an option? Isn't this the same guy who ran Cleveland's game-changing offense? I mean, I've NEVER seen an isolation play run for 48 minutes.

He should not be anywhere near this team. I pray to god that Mike Brown doesn't reassemble his coaching staff from Cleveland. I will punch a **** hole in my wall.

Four years later, fate will join Mike Brown and Ettore Messina on an ambitious and not without difficulties. Because the rumor has become news, and as I have known, Messina will accept the offer from the Lakers and will take the American adventure for the next season. The Italian coach, who had been tempted by the Nets and Spurs, will be responsible for straightening the ship and be an important part in the decisions and moves that are going to do in the coming days. Movements of which is pending Pau Gasol himself, criticized after eliminating the Lakers at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki.

Rumors flew late afternoon from Los Angeles. The journalist Eric Pincus of HOOPSWORLD, echoed rumors that placed as assistant coach Ettore Messina of Mike Brown in Los Angeles Lakers. The former Cleveland coach Messina met since 2007, when he visited to check their training methods in the technical phase of Sicilian at CSKA Moscow. Apparently, Brown, a great lover of defensive play, was impressed by the methods of Ettore.

Yeah that's already been reported. I hope Messina and TG are in fact coming but I remember hearing on SC that Brown's looking to replicate what he had in Cleveland and bring it to L.A.

Messina is known for developing post players? I guess they're looking to shift more of the offensive load from Kobe onto Drew, while also helping Pau get back to form.

Ettore Messina closer to Lakers?

The Italian coach close to agreeing with Lakers
Ettore Messina, as reported by sources close to the coach, is closer to accepting the proposal of Los Angeles Lakers for the assistant coach position.
Messina would be the assistant of the new head coach Mike Brown, hired by Lakers to replace Phil Jackson.
Messina started the season in Spain with Real Madrid but re-signed from the bench at the end of Euroleague Top 16, despite the team was already qualified, in first position, for the playoffs.

mike brown kinda brushed off talk about ettore messina during his intro presser.

i couldnt hear the journo's question, but mike brown said something about curling his r's and then went on to say if he gets better at curling those r's, "he" (ettore?) just might be a part of the staff

Sounds like Lakers will add Mike Malone to coaching staff - not official yet. Also waiting for word on Ettore Messina.

So how many assistants does a head coach usually have?

At first I thought the whole staff were considered 'assistants,' but now, it seems like there's one true Assistant Coach and the rest of the staff have different responsibilities.

Dunno.

But Brown's been rumored to be bringing in Malone, Kuester, and that Mavs assistant (forgot his name, Tim something with a G). Add Messina and you have 4 right there.

brian shaw looks like he's out

mike brown this morning:

I have a list of guys right now and I’m actually in the process of [narrowing] the list down with [Lakers General Manager] Mitch Kupchak and going over the list and, uh, seeing what we can do. But I have a list of top tier guys and he’s not on that list because it’s a very, very short list. I just have to see where I’m able to head in the direction with those guys and then we’ll kind of head from there
