Tired of hearing how Lakers need a PG

Post#1 » by LovetheNBA1 » Wed Jun 1, 2011 7:38 pm

The Lakers have won 5 without a PG. Magic was not a pure PG on defense at all. He guarded fowards.

Miami does not have a real PG. Its not a point guards league. Its a closers league. What the Lakers need is a legit third option like they had in Ariza. And Gasol needs to be a real star.

Who is the best PG to win a title in the last 20 years? Parker?

ehhhem... The Lakers clearly need a damn pg. I don't want to hear that Kobe should handle the ball all game long (more than even now) or that LO could slide right in there (and watch Chriss Paul jog past him every drive), or that Fish or Blake is the answer.

bottom line PG- need one.

This post reeks of ignorance. Why haven't we needed a PG? Because we ran the triangle. We're probably not going to run the triangle anymore, so we do in fact need an actual playmaker. Magic wasn't a PG on defense? Hmmm, maybe that was because he was slightly larger than the average PG. By about half a foot. He made plays for others, he was the playmaker for the Lakers on the floor, thus he was the PG.

That's like saying Jason Kidd isn't a PG on defense because he guards Kobe Bryant whenever we match up.

Miami doesn't have a PG, but they have a point-forward who creates for others in LeBron, and Wade is a good enough playmaker to also create for others. The Lakers don't have anyone like that full-time. Kobe can't create for everyone each time down the court. Unless you want him to be completely worn out in the next two years.

Serious? Magic not a PG? Well I know he was big for the position but you can't say Magic wasn't a PG. He averaged an unreal amount of assist for this team. We need a freaking PG NOW.

PG is a useless postion on the lakers. Kobe, and Lamar handle the ball so much.

Really when you talk PG, you thinking of guarding other quick guards. I agree they need another guard. But it can be a 2 o 3. He just needs to be quick.

We do not need the traditional PG that gets guys into their sweet spots. That is not the roster we have.

Kobe will never be a off the ball kind of guy like Reggie Miller. He has played his whole career with the ball or in the post.

I think its more fantasy. We never had a PG in the Kobe era. It was always guys like Ron Harper or Fisher.

But 2004 showed me how a PG looks with Kobe. Payton looked awful with Kobe. All getting payton did was make into a jump shooter which he is not.

We don't need a great PG. We do need somebody with pulse.

False, they need a quick player. It does not have to be a traditional PG. I think they need more an Ariza type of guy. A guy that can guard quick guards and athletic SFs. Then you can interchange Kobe, by allowing Kobe to play the slower man.

Its not a traditional PG they need. Kobe is an old dog. He needs the ball. Lamar needs the ball.

PGs do not fit with Kobe. Steve Blake is one of those traditional PGs like Gary Payton. They really do not know fit with Kobe because they are poor shooters. And playing with a Kobe makes you a spot up shooter.

There is a reason guys like Jordan and Kobe never play with a pure PG. They have the ball in their hands. They need more of a guy that can slash and hit open shots.

And somebody that can defend PGs...

Magic didn't really play PG on defense... We had a string of defensive/spot shooter specialists for that... Nixon, Scott, Jordan, Lester, etc...

The pure PG is a myth. Kidd was always slower then most PGs. He guarded Kobe since he came into the league, and did a good job.

Steve Nash is a pure PG, but he cannot play defense.

The Lakers need athletic guards. Asking for a 1 is asinine. We do not need one, and most 1's cannot guard pgs. Its usually bigger guys that give pgs trouble.

So we should just run Kobe with dual role of facilitator/primary offensive option until the wheels fall off. Fantastic. I don't see how that could possibly be a problem. It's not like Kobe is ever going to age, or that he's not as athletic or quick as he used to be. We'll be fine.

I don't care how you choose to define it. But we clearly need somebody to play our other guard spot who isn't going to get torched on defense and can contribute at a reasonable level on offense, in whatever capacity they can. If that's another spot-up shooter, fine. But we need something.

The Lakers were running the triangle then. That system didn't need a traditional PG. They will not be running the triangle as the primary offense now. Payton also strayed away from the offense a lot.

Not to mention Gary Payton was 34 and on the tail-end of his career.
