At first glance the buyout looks like an impediment but lets say we know he stays over for another year or God forbid two. He would not be a number 5 pick not even close. Therein lies an opportunity to trade down for him and rake in another asset. The thing that bothers me about a Val pick is finishing out the draft without any other intriguing 2011 assets added to the equation. It will look like a strike out at least in the short term.

His agent is Leon Rose. Rose has indicated he will strike a deal at least a week before the draft. If the deal is in place, and Rose says Valanciunas will be available when the season begins (whenever that is), Valanciunas won't go any lower than he would if his contract in Europe was over.

And reading the body language of David Stern tonight, I'd say it's a safe bet that there won't be any NBA ball until January 2012. So I am not particularly concerned about 2011 assets so much as what the team will have in October 2012.

It sounds to me like JV has Sarunas Broga as the agent dealing with his Euro contracts and Leon Rose as his American one. Broga is the name I'm seeing in the buyout reports and DX says he's "primary" and Rose is "secondary"
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change

Did I understand BC to say in today's teleconference that they'd narrowed down the draft board to eight "and that was being generous". So the eight would be:

Kanter
Val
Knight
Walker
BB
Leonard
Vesely

Utah may be interested in Vesely (smokescreen?) which would mean Knight would most likely fall to us.

I like hearing that we're looking strongly at Biyombo and Leonard with our pick... looks like BC finally has his head on right with regards to a defensive mentality for this franchise. I think Biyombo's going to be great... I was very skeptical about him earlier, but if he's legitimately 18 or 19 y/o, we absolutely need to take him... he's the best player available on the defensive side of the ball and he fills a huge need for our team.I love the way he plays and makes his presence felt when he's on the court... everybody needs to be aware of where Biyombo is or he'll come out of no where and make you pay. I think he can come in right away and be effective for us. Hope this is where BC's heart falls on draft night.

In his interviews the names BC has mentioned are Kanter/Biyombo/Valanciunas/Knight/Walker/Vesely/Leonard/Burks/Thompson. If I'm not mistaken, the first 5 have been mentioned in every interview BC has given since draft night. Burks was mentioned once, I think Leonard once or twice, Vesely once, and he mentioned being impressed with Tristan (although he also brought up duplication with Ed).

As long as its one of those first 5 you mention BB, then I'll be happy. Those 2nd 4 are all kinds of yuck for various reasons.

Kemba's got a 6 in Defense on NBAdraft.net

If he's that bad, why would we take him?

My thoughts exactly. Within those first 5 I do like the bigs better, because I think the three of them are solid young prospects that give us a chance to dramatically improve our interior D/rebounding at the 5 (and land the kind of bigman that you can rarely obtain outside the draft), but I suppose I'd be fine with a Knight/Walker pick as well.

Because it's not NBA live.

@DraftExpress
Jonathan Givony
That's why Toronto is strongly looking at both Bismack Biyombo and Kawhi Leonard with the #5 pick. Both would help a lot in that regard.

And nobody should be using NBAdraft.net to be basing opinions on or for...anything really. Awful site.

If we make a pick based on defence then it should be Biyombo hands down....especially when next year's draft is loaded with SFs better then Leonard.

Agreed, if we were to shore up on the defensive end, the center position needs to be addressed..so pick Biyombo this year and make a run for Michael Gilchrest next year and we'll be in the running for the NBA all-defensive team :D

I don't know who has more of a bust factor; Biyombo or Jonas Val. That said, I don't think we need Kawhi because there tons of SF in this FA market. Wilson Chandler and T Young being top of my list IMO:

That said, I rather pick Knight at 5 if he is available, then Biyombo. For Cs, we can sign Joel Prizblla or Sam Dalembert in the FA market. This is also not including what BC may do in trades. Going to be an interesting summer.

Last night I had a dream where we took Biyombo. I wouldn't take it too seriously though because we also passed on Brandon Knight to do it.

In terms of upside, you're probably right. I've never considered myself to be a great scout of talent (I thought Gerald Green would be good), but it's even more difficult to get an idea of how good Biyombo will be. As it has been said before, you can always find minutes for a defensive big man. He could be on the court the same time as Bargnani, Amir, or Ed Davis (or in theory, any other big man with a little bit of an offensive game). In that sense, Biyombo is arguably the best upside guy in the draft.

But as we all know, there's a significant downside too. He may not even be an NBA player - there have been many players in his mold that have failed in the NBA - a lot more than have succeeded. I can't root for it as a pick (I'm more interested in Kemba and Knight), but if we get Biyombo it would be a very interesting pick.

I'd pass on Knight for Kawhi but not for Bismack, and I wouldn't pass on either euro big for any of these guys.

Perhaps the order:

Valanciunas
Thompson
Biyombo
Vesely
Leonard
Burks

Things might change after workout.
