How come press is calling Brown the Lakers first black coach? Isn't he officially their 2nd Black coach?

Yeah, Magic became Lakers coach in March 1994, but they went 5-11 under him and he quit after the season. But I'd say that still qualifies him as being the Lakers first black coach.

MIke brown def seems hungry. but i feel like he should only add to the lakers. dont try so much to put his stamp on the team. I try to compare it to the pittsburgh steelers when tomlin took over. He didnt go and bring his tampa 2 defense just to boost his ego. he stuck with dick lebeau and kept the ball rolling. I think brown needs to stick with what works. (keep shaw, keep triangle offense)

Coach Brown was on the Dan Patrick Show Today. Here is a brief rundown on what he said.

– Brown said that a few teams contacted him before the Lakers. He said that he was farthest along in the process with Golden State. Brown said that the Lakers got a deal done before he could fly to the Bay Area to meet with the Warriors and possibly seal a deal. :o

– Brown talked about the interview with the Lakers. He said that in the middle of the interview, GM Mitch Kupchak said that the Lakers had lost control of the interview and Brown had taken over — but that wasn’t a problem.

– Brown said he won’t call Phil Jackson. “Right now it is not necessary for me to do that,” Brown said. He said he just doesn’t know Jackson. Brown said Brian Shaw is NOTon his list of potential assistants right now. Brown wants to see who he gets. :-?

– Brown said he sat down face-to-face with Kobe Bryant. He said they talked about family, and then later on got into basketball philosophy. “When I first talked to him, I think I talked to his wife more than I talked to him,” Brown said.

– Brown emphasized that defense wins championships, and said the two teams playing in the Finals prove that.

– Brown said that the Cavaliers were close to landing Amar’e Stoudemire last season. “We were close, but at the end of the day it just didn’t work out,” Brown said. :eek2:

– Brown weighed in on Shaquille O’Neal. He said that Shaq was very effective for him before he got hurt. Brown even said they ran their offense through LeBron. :sleep2:

Man, he's a tough read...

At times I feel like maybe he's a little too familiar and doesn't have the presence to inspire confidence through a long season/post season... I can kind of see where his relationship with LeBrick would go south because of it.

But then I'm inspired by his energy and confidence...

I think it will definitely have to be a wait and see sort of deal with him.

With Phil, you might have had Kobe go against him at times, but the rest of the guys would probably been too intimidated by his presence to ignore his wishes...

But with Brown, I don't think he has the presence to keep his players in line without a lot of 'interaction.'

Exactly one bad game at a crucial point Kobe, Odom or Artest get upset and blow up on the bench. What happens? Will he confront them and demand they chill or man-up. Will he melt like he did with LBJ?

I can easily see where BShaw would jump in the grill of Odom and Artest to reset their demeanor. I can see him going off on Gasol and Bynum to get their act together. I can see BShaw motivating Kobe and Matt to do better when the storm hits.

Can anyone visualize this? Think about it! Did Bron motivate the CAVS or did Brown run them? I think their motivation and level of play had more to do with Bron being the ALPHA, and less to do with Brown being a motivating factor.

Well, if JERRY WEST wanted him as coach, then we all should know this was a good signing!

– Brown said Brian Shaw is NOTon his list of potential assistants right now. Brown wants to see who he gets. :-?

No big deal unless he hires someone worse than Shaw. It really wouldn't be the best thing for Shaw to be an assitant here next year as it would cause Brown to be looking over his shoulder too much, knowing that the team initially wanted Shaw and is more familiar with him.

Smart move ...

Um, one of the Finals teams prove that ... Dallas, not so much.

– Brown said that the Cavaliers were close to landing Amar’e Stoudemire last season. “We were close, but at the end of the day it just didn’t work out,” Brown said. :eek2:

Had the Cavs had a smart GM and got Shaq a year earlier and Amare last year Lebron may be about to win his 3rd title this year ... I'm glad Danny Ferry was running things, hahaha.

– Brown weighed in on Shaquille O’Neal. He said that Shaq was very effective for him before he got hurt.

Could Shaq be coming back to play for the Lakers late next season ... pulling a PJ Brown? I think so!
