Nick Calathes:

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri May 6, 2011 10:56 pm

In 2009, Nick Calathes made the unusual move of leaving a college powerhouse like Florida as a sophomore to sign a contract with a European giant like Panathinaikos. The 6-foot-6 guard, whose draft rights are owned by the Dallas Mavericks, doesn’t look back on what could have been and is now shooting for a Euroleague title with the Greek club.

You played at the World Championship with the Greek National Team last year. How was that experience?

Nick Calathes: It was good. Obviously being in that kind of atmosphere and fighting for a World Championship is a great honor. Obviously playing for Greece is a great honor as well. We wish we could have done better. We had some tough games. You know, right now I’m focused on Panathinaikos, but it was a great honor.

So will he return to mavs? I would like the 2012/2013 guard rotation of Roddy/Dojo/Nick

I will go out on a limb and say none of the listed players will be in the regular rotation in 2012/2013.

An interview from Chris Sheridan to Donnie Nelson about Calathes future with Dallas. Its on a Greek website so you have to use a kind of translator. If you cant understand something feel free to ask me to translate it by my self:
http://www.gazzetta.gr/article/item/192768-nva-vlepei-kalathe

Some important parts:
1)Its possible that Calathes will be with Dallas next season, but even more possible the year next. His buy out its low, only 500.000

2)We got lucky that slipped to us on the draft day. ''We believe him''. He reminds him Danny Ainge. Big guard who can play both positions well.

3)He is lucky that is playing for a coach that he used to be a PG his self too, so he can understand him.

My observations now: 1st of all he is really lucky that is playing for a legendary coach as coach Obradovic. He is on my team for 15 years, making Panathinaikos the best team in Europe, only 2 trophies away to catch Real. He has produced/developed some of the best guards of the Greek basketball such Diamantidis/Spanoulis etc. With him Nick started being non factor to very important player on Euroleague PO's/F4.

His D have been much improved as his decisions with the ball. Passing/running the offense is his best attribute. He still has shaggy J, but Diamantidis had the same issues early on his career too. His body is still rail thin but much improved those years. He has very good speed/quickness, but doesnt jump high. If he stays an other year with Pana, i think that will be ready to take a similar role to Kidd, being the PG on offense letting Roddy to do what he does best (scoring), and on D to guard the bigger/less athletic guards, letting Roddy to guard the speedsters.

P.S. Sorry for my poor English

You are probably right. I like building teams through the draft

Thanks for posting, many here have been following Nick and were wondering if Dallas was going to bring him back to the states, or try to re-sign JJ Barea.

Big game for Nick tonight, with absence of Diamantidis since he was injured in the first minutes of the game.
16 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds!

Panathinaikos became the champions of the league again.
