Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Society
Since we have a very limited budget after resigning Hill, adding the #13 pick and paying off VC, something in the $4mil range, I thought we could use a thread where we suggest players to fill our needs that have fallen through the cracks.
I'm kidding about GGreen, though not a lot. Remember when it was "The Gerald Green Show"? But Gerald doesn't fit a need right now not like ....
Jeff Pendergraph ... who came up on another thread (ho ho, what do you know, it was me who brought him up as a possibility) - currently waived and teamless. Is he a vet min candidate? No reason he can't be fully recovered from the ACL injury.
And how about Lester Hudson, who bizarrely has failed to stick anywhere - an upgrade on Dowdell defensively and as a shoot-from-anywhere scorer, he's a good enough point guard to play either position dependant on need. Played in China last year after being waived by the Wiz.
And I still say we could use Ammo off the bench as a shooter, although he is also an excellent passing forward. Put him in at the 2 just for shooting - let that elite frontcourt defense hide his sins. Serious
okay, I'll wait for the sniggering to subside.
Point is - if nothing major happens (VC to someone else in return for a big contract who's useful to us, i.e Iggy/Hamilton), we have most of the seats filled on our little adventure ride into the future and the remaining ones need to be filled cheap, and I'm sure we all have some player who's close to our hearts that just didn't make it for some reason.
Who you got?

Re: Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Soci
Pendergraph is a definate vet. min. candidate. Love the hustle, etc. Reminds of a Lou in that sense.
God I miss Lou.
Don't forget about Lawal though, I still think he'll be a solid addition to the regular rotation.
Our roster will finally be down to managable.
PG - Nash / Brooks
SG - Dudley / Pietrus
SF - Hill / Childress
PF - Frye / Warrick / Lawal
C - Gortat / Lopez
My main concern is that it doesn't feel like we have an actual SG or PF on our roster. Anyone that we play at the 2 is really a SF and in terms of the 4, Frye is a C that can shoot and Warrick is a tweener 3/4 that can dunk.
I'm happy at PG, SF & C. Which leads me invariably back to PHI as a trading partner with Igoudala/Brand coming to the Valley.

Dowdell is still under contract, right? That's 12 - who else is missing? Siler - makes 13. They both have a year left. Brooks and Hill are expired. VC is a buyout but $4m onto the cap regardless.
We have 5.7mil and 1.9 TPE but I don't know when they run out.

Re: Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Soci
I love threads like these, because its very realistic, and also very interesting to see how much knowlege peoplehave about the NBA out of LeBron and Kobe.
PG- Ishmael Smith
If Brooks is let go and Dwodell is kept as the full time backup point guard, I would love to see the Suns go after Ishmael Smith. He's 22, went undrafted, and really, was quite solid off the bench as the backup point guard for the Rockets and Grizzlies. Th Grizz are already very deep at the pg (Conley, Vasquez), so I think we would be able to pick him up.
SG- Sonny Weems
Not sure how much of a barigain Weems will be, but with the emergence of DeRozan, and the presence of Barbosa, Weems may be the odd one out. Weems is a teriffic athelete, and is capable of some very exciting plays. Not a bad shoter either.
SF- Julian Wright
This former lottery pick has had a rough start to his NBA career- bouncing from team to team and not really getting many meaningful minutes. He's 6'9, has an excellent wingspan and is very versatile. He even has the ability to shoot the three ball. If Hill leaves, I would pick up Wright jsut because of the potential.
PF- Jarvis Varnado
Everyone was clamouring for him last year leading up to the draft. He's an excellent shotblocker, tenacious rebounder, and has a nice looking mi range jump shot. If he was drafted by any other team than the Heat, he would still be in the NBA. If given the oppotunity, this guy could be a GREAT player for us.
C- Byron Mullens
Stuck on the bench in OKC, Mullens is a former 1 round pick back on 2009. A legit 7 footer, with a 9'3 standing reach and a 260 pound body, Mullens has big potential to become very solid in the NBA. He has good hands, runs the floor really well, and establishes good position in the post.
(As Mentioned Above)

I went off Sonny a bit watching him with the Raps but maybe I just saw him haves some bad games - he was explosive at times.
Varnado is a great pick - I completely forgot about him
I'd also like to see what Javaris Crittenton is up to

Re: Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Soci
I thought we would have more space due to VC going. We supposedly were interested on Crawford, West... those two would adres some of the lacks we have.
I do not agree with Pietrus not being a real two. He has more handling than we thing and can shoot over almost anybody. A good defender, in addition. I hope he plays more next year. He should.
I really believe we need a PF or center who can play down low and atract the defense so he can pass out the ball to Pietrus, Hill, Dudley, Nash. We lack that kind of player. Gortat can do that a little bit, Lawal could do that and Brand or West would be great fits.
I believe the Hornets need a center to fill Okafor lack of phisical abilities. He cannot jump as he used to. May be a sign and trade with them for West including Robin (who definitely should be sent far from here for his and our own convinience) and we could get West and, hopefully, a back up center, even is he is Aaron Gray, who could be as effective getting easy buckets from Nash as he has been with Paul.

--- I'd like to see Chill at the SF and MP as the 2. Get another defender on the frontline and we're solid, without sacrificing offense

Humphries better get a raise after the $2 million ring he bought Kim K. On a $3 mil salary.
As for the topic, I think Pendergraph is definitely one of the better bargains to be had. Largely unproven but definitely has potential, and he'd see time if we don't make significant changes.
I do wonder how much stock our FO will put in Gani's recovery and development. I'm not too confident really, but if there's any shot of him becoming a contributor it'd be nice to give him some of the "bargain basement" minutes.

You're supposed to spend 3 months salary on the engagement ring - an interesting sum which I believe was first proposed as the standard by .... diamond merchants.

Re: Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Soci
My List.... Part 2.
PG- Marcus Williams
Young guy, former first round pick. Has quite a bit of talent but never really made it in the NBA. I would bring him in for pre-season just for a look. Very good passer, bt lacks experience at running the show.
PG (2)- Acie Law
Never really stuck to a team so far in his career. Seems to move cities every season. He's got great size for a Pg, which he uses to ihs advantage to shoot over shorter Pg's. Great playmaker, and even though his first step isnt the fastest in the world, he gets to the rim well. I would be extremely happy with him as our third string pg.
SF- Victor Claver
A Euro at the moment, in which Portland owns his right to. If we do go through with the Aarom Brooks trade, I would really want to have Claver coming back our way. Getting big minutes in Europe, I could see him as a Gortat/Splitter/Jenning kind of guy that really benefitted by going to Europe.
PF- Eduardo Najera
A veteran big man that could use the quality training staff here. Owns a pretty decent jump shot, and isnt a bad rebounder. Vets min contract for sure.
C- Kyrylo Fesenko
This guy has SIZE. 7 feet tall, 280 pounds with a 7'5 wingspan and a 9'4 standing reach. BIG dude. Could really help lock the paint as a third string Center.

Re: Bargain Basement, or, The Gerald Green Appreciation Soci
I like the idea of a guy like Pendergraph. Team really missed Lou last year. I am not sure why he wasn't brought back but Lou should have been brought back. You see it in the playoffs - guys like Haslem, Collison, Tony Allen - they come off the bench and just contribute.
So, if Lawal is getting better, thats fine. Or a guy like Pendergraph - they hustle, they board, they foul, they clank layups, they foul some more - but they really bring value to the team by creating extra possessions. Good players to have on the roster.

Why not Reggie Evans? I don't think he'll be that expensive, and he's a master when it comes to rebounding and hustle. He plays good on the defensive end, he can get his shots when he needs too. He's a good guy in the locker room too, in Toronto he seems to be a big fan favourite, kind of like Jerome aka JYD.

Gah, who cares TASTIC. The Suns board is pretty low traffic.
