Does Shaq deserve a statue?

Post#1 » by PurpleGold » Sat Jun 4, 2011 7:38 am

I say yes. Gretzky has a statue in front of the Staples Center and played 7 1/2 years in LA even though everyone remembers him for his time with the Oilers. Oscar de la Hoya has a **** statue outside the Staples Center. Jerry West just got one and he had only one title to Shaq's four. If they deserve one, Shaq certainly does as well, as does Kareem in spite of his public complaints.

He sure does. His most iconic moment is point towards the bench when he got the lob from Kobe in the '00 Porland series. What would be a whole lot of awesome is if there was a statue of when Kobe and Shaq one their first ring together and their reaction right after, I doubt their egos would allow it, but that would be a sick statue.

How many statues are there going to be? KAJ is next in line, Kobe is in 100%, I deserves his jersey to be retired but not a statue.

I didn't like the idea of Shaq's jersey being retired, but he does deserve it. However, he does NOT deserve a statue, by any stretch.

The most memorable Lakers become "Laker Legends." The best of the Legends have their jerseys retired. Only the VERY best of the best--who are Lakers through and through--get statues.

Shaq doesn't make it to the "statue" cut. At least that's my opinion.

Thats a tough one. Im going to say no though. I think his jersey being retired is enough. At some point you have to seperate the differences of what Kobe and Shaq meant to the organization. One spent his whole career here winning 5 (maybe more) rings and the other won 3 and went and signed with the Boston Celtics.

all I remember from that iconic moment is how he left Kobe hanging with the high five, but then Shaq can never do wrong, right?

Staples Center is going to have to turn one of their parking lots into a statue garden.

YES, it's a no-brainer .... but he should have his statue AFTER Kobe has his. If Kareem is going to get a statue, Shaq definitely deserves one ... 3 straight titles, 3 straight Finals MVP's, 4 conference titles in 5 years, put the Lakers back on the map after Showtime disappeared and the lake show was just a run of the mill team, come on man, of course he deserves a statue.

In my opinion he voided his right to a statue when he went to play for Miami, Phoenix, Cleveland and Boston.

waaay past his prime.

But the jersey is good enough. I really do not think Oscar deserves a statue. But Kareem definitely deserves a statue. If Shaq would of retired as a Laker then yes. But he did not.

Hehe, I always noticed that as well. Kobe slaps his wrist, almost a high five Kobe, almost.

Yes he obviously does. Guys think to much about his time after the laker days, it's about what he did for us. He deserves it as much as Kobe or even more, but I honestly couldn't care less about a statue. The true Lakers will remember what he did against Pacers, how he single handly beat them down.

Shaq is a legend and for us he'll always be a Laker.

No. as of right now the honor of getting a statue is for the most legendary of Lakers, who at a point and time were considered the greatest in franchise history. West was considered the GOAT Laker, then Kareem and Magic came along, now it's Kobe and it should remain that way. However, I'm not opposed to the idea of say a Lakers Museum inside Staples, to show off the History of the franchise

No, he wasted his physical advantages with lazy attitude - unlike other Lakers' legends.
But he was fun, so maybe a sign on Hollywood Walk of Fame next to Mickey Mouse

They should just change the name from Staples Center to Getty Center

Really? The capper to probably the greatest comeback in franchise history, and that's what you remember?

IMO no player who did not finish their career as a Los Angeles Laker shouldn't even be considered this prestigious honor.
