You're the PHX GM - What do you do?
This offseason, the PHX GM will have some decisions to make. All of which will shape the roster next year. Does he blow it up? Does he regear? This is where you come in. Let's say they listened to every decision you made. What would your roster look like?
Here's the gist:
1. You can make any trades allowed within current CBA rules. Just have them make sense. No Carter for LeBron bull. That just makes you look like an ass.
2. You have the MLE and Bi-Annual Exception at your disposal to sign FAs.
3. You have the #13 pick this draft - who do you take? (Feel free to trade the pick if conducive)
Show your moves and final roster. I'd love to get your thoughts on this, I know we have a few armchair GMs on here that could give us some interesting things to look at!

to draft your PG and PF/C.
Instead of a slow SF, small PF in Williams.... I'm sure he'll be fine, but I have doubts about being a superstar. Biyombo can be your Ben Wallace/Ibaka type defender... and you have Kemba to run the PG spot.

Re: You're the PHX GM - What do you do?
Assuming the Timberwolves keep the No. 2 Pick and draft Derrick Williams, I'd push hard for a trade for Michael Beasley. I can't see Minnesota keeping Beasley, Love, Randolph, and then Williams. That is too much talent in the PF/SF. I don't believe they want to offer a huge contract to Beasley if they couldn't even win 20 games. I'd offer Robin Lopez, No. 13, and the 2013 First (Top 3 protected).
Beasley is the perfect PF in the Suns system. He doesn't really possess much of a post game but Amare didn't really have one either. He can face up, take slower PF's off the dribble, and shoot the mid-range jumper. Nash-Beasley pick and rolls would be deadly.
That's it. Nothing major, but just a legitimate piece the Suns need.
Nash/Pietrus/Hill/Beasley/Gortat
Brooks/Dudley/Childress/Warrick/Frye
Oh, and then let's hope Mayo stays with the Grizzlies, so the Suns can offer him a max contract in 2012 where Memphis won't match the offer.

Re: You're the PHX GM - What do you do?
Suns get:
Andre' Iguodala
Michael Beasley
Timberwolves get:
Vince Carter + trade exception cash for Beasley's contract
Sixers get:
Hakim Warrick
Josh Childress
13th draft pick (from Suns)
Why this makes sense for:
Suns- we will get rid of our excess guards and bring in an explosive scorer that we can rely on, who also is a good defender, and can over-size many shooting guards (iguodala). we will also get a power-forward with a lot of potential, who is explosive and has a good near-by jump-shot, and can also work the pick and roll wonderfully with Nash.
Timberwolves: considering they already have a ton of powerforwards/centers, and will probably choose another one in the draft, they could get rid of Beasley. Also, they could buy out Carter (4 million dollars), which is payed for with the cash from the trade exception (5 million dollars) and have a spare million dollars for signing a decent free agent?
Sixers: they have been wanting to deal Iguodala for a while now, and this is a perfect chance. they get an offensively explosive powerforward, Warrick, and get a defensive/rebounding small forward, Childress. Also, this leaves them with about 1.5 million dollars in spending money, in which they could use to sign another free agent. On top of that, with a lack of backcourt scoring, they could choose Jimmer Fredette with the 13th pick.
Suns roster:
Nash-Brooks
Iguodala-Dudley
Hill-Pietrus
Frye-Beasley
Gortat-Lopez

Re: You're the PHX GM - What do you do?
Trade Pietrus + 13 for Jason Thompson
Sign Afflalo to the full MLE
Try to trade Brooks, don't know to who.
Buy out Carter.
Re-sign Dowdell
Nash/Afflalo/Hill/Frye/Gortat
Dowdell/Dudley/Childress/Thompson/Warrick/Lawal/Lopez
Defense, three point gunners, rebounding, fast, youth infusion, and still set up nicely for 2012 or future offseasons.

If I'm GM I push to keep the team going and let my owner figure out the finances....
Trade #1:
PHX trades VC, Warrick
PHX receives Roy, Camby, #21
Trade #2:
PHX trades Pietrus, Lopez, #21
PHX receives D. Lee
Try to sign JRich for the full MLE, resign Hill to the Bi-Annual Exception, draft Fredette
Nash/ #13 (Fredette)/ Dowdell
Roy/ J-Rich (Full MLE)
Hill(BAE)/ Dudley/ Childress
Lee/ Frye/ Lawal
Gortat/ Camby/ Siler

Re: You're the PHX GM - What do you do?
Ok, me as GM, here's what i would do:
BLOW IT ALL UP AND REBUILD AROUND YOUNG TALENT!
----------While maintaining financial flexibility----------
TRADES
Trade #1.
POR gets Nash
HOU gets Batum/Frye
PHX gets Miller/Williams/Hill/Thabeet/#21
Trade #2.
MEM gets Lopez/Pietrus
PHX gets Mayo
Trade #3.
MIN gets Gortat/#13
CLE gets Childress/#2
PHX gets Flynn/Randolph/CLE TPE/#4
Trade the #4 to a (current & future) Lotto team (TOR/CHA/DET/WAS) for a 2012 1st.
DRAFT/FA
Draft Iman Shumpert @ #21
Draft Jeremy Tyler with purchased late 1st/early 2nd.
Buy VC out.
Either S&T Brooks, or let him walk.
Sign Chuck Hayes.
2011 Suns Line-up:
Flynn/Shumpert/Z
Mayo/Dudley
Williams/Lawal
Randolph/Hill/Warrick
Hayes/Tyler/Thabeet
Super cheap team chocked full of young talent. It will take time to develop the youngins and for them to find their way and gel, but im fine with that, as it means a top pick in the loaded 2012 Draft (2 counting the #4 trade). Also with the league most likely to be a shortened season due to a lockout, it makes it even easier to tank with a loaded draft coming up. So instead of going through 82 games of developing talent and sucking, we would only have 50(?) games of developing talent and sucking! Chuck Hayes would be a great Veteran example for the young players. He is a gritty dirt worker, who doesnt have the size, yet brings heart and intensity to the court. Great defender, as Shane Battier said it best, "Water covers 70% of the planet, Chuck Hayes covers the rest.".
Future
Draft accordingly (2 lotto picks) in 2012.
If Flynn/Shumpert dont pan out very well, draft Kabongo or Teague
If Mayo/Dudley dont work out, draft Beal or Rivers.
If Williams/Lawal dont work out, draft Gilchrist or Barnes or Nash or Miller.
Randolph/Hill/Warrick replacements: Davis, Jones, McAdoo, Sullinger, and Henson.
Hayes/Tyler/Thabeet replacements include: Young
Suns 2011 Salary:
Thabeet - $4.8M (2 years)
Mayo - $4.4M (1 year)
Warrick - $4.2M (3 years)
Flynn - $3.2M (2 years)
Hill - $2.7M (2 years)
Williams - $2.2M (2 years)
Dudley - $2.1M (5 years)
Randolph - $1.9M (1 year)
Lawal - $473K (2 years)
Dowdell - $243K (1 year)
Shumpert & Tyler on rookie scale deals : About $1M each.

SUB-TOTAL: $28M

Add about $4M for Chuck Hayes. (4 years)

Fire the Gorilla
Erect a statue of Al McCoy.
Go back to Purple uniforms... throw backs to the '93 and '76 ones
Get rid of all things orange
Create a general admission/lottery draw for an entire lower section across from the teams. (think Cameron Crazies) Clean out the morgue-like cavern and return the arena to a madhouse.
Play preseason games at local AZ high schools with GenAd seats... all proceeds go to the schools.
Do not practice in San Diego.
Create a band... have tryouts and hire a marching arena band, seeded with lunacy but well conducted, and sit them behind the opposition's 4th Q hoop. They will provide all of the music rather than the current electronic assault on the ears. They also will perform at halftime with the dancers.
Hire more dancers.
Give Chief SpasticReaction a spotlit seat also behind the opposing basket.
Change the opening to this....

EDIT >>. ahhh scratch my player moves... I have no idea what to do... do we keep brooks ? Can we trade Lopez ? Can we sign Affalo ? Do we draft a PF... trade up trade down ??
13 more days of this confusion..... then , likely a freaking lockout.

I'm hoping the GM is watching Dallas in the Finals, and noting the following things:
1. Defense
2. Passing
3. Shooting
4. Cohesion

That sounds pretty much like our WCF squad a year ago, but with better shooting and less defence.

Rebuild while staying competitive.
Trade Nash and Hill to a CONTENDER
Get rid of Vince Carter
GET RID OF BROOKS
Hope Lawal pans out
Hope Silar gets better
Hope lopez remembers how to play
idk there are a lot of moves that need to be made
Man...our roster just isnt good. Im really looking at it right now lol... outside of dudley, gortat and frye, we dont have much. (assuming we get rid of nash and hill, which we might not)

Sign Afflalo to the full MLE
Try to trade Brooks, don't know to who.
Buy out Carter.
Re-sign Dowdell
Nash/Afflalo/Hill/Frye/Gortat
Dowdell/Dudley/Childress/Thompson/Warrick/Lawal/Lopez
Defense, three point gunners, rebounding, fast, youth infusion, and still set up nicely for 2012 or future offseasons.
+1

On the other hand -
Gortat, Frye and Chilly as 5/4/3 is a decent rebounding and defensive unit, only one 3-point shooter but a good slashing/alley-oop SF, a tough center who can finish the pick and roll. Hope that Lawal comes back to where he was a year ago and you have a good banger who is committed to his role and enjoys getting physical. Be nice if Chills could develop an outside shot ...
PG is, all things considered, still one of the best in the league and yes, a defensive liability but witha better defensive frontcourt, we can minimize the damage. Pietrus and Duds are both solid at the off-guard, 3-pt shooters and both capable defenders. Everyone mentioned so far is a competitor - none of them take nights off.
the second line is less ... good, shall we say
Grant Hill, excellent leadership, very good defender, rebounder and reliable offensively - though not a great 3-pt shooter he has improved and is much less hesitant. Doug Collins said many times when he was broadcasting, that he used to use Hill as PG when he was shorthanded .... i wonder of that's an option on the second line? At any rate we have Dowdell, who is a good backup, and cheap cheap cheap.
I'd play Duds as the 2 rather than start him, hoping for more of that off the bench energy we had 2 years ago.
Dowdell, Duds, Lopez, Hill, Lawal. That's a little light on the scoring but it's what we've got, right? I can't remember what ZD is like defensively but I think he's okay - Duds is solid and Grant is exceptional - Lawal will get used but he's a banger and a proud player - he'll give it right back. Lopez even at his best was never a very good rebounder. This is where we need to draft a guy with the build and length, to rebound and carve out turf, and the desire. Byombo, Faried, Singleton - all seem like the right type of player.
(And one more time, juts to amuse Frank, it would be nice to bring Janning back - he can play both guard slots but is a very good 2, excellent outside shot and great attitude and ethic. Think Vasquez with a touch of Nash. Like Steve he has great court vision and instincts - he knows the right basketball play to make. Also, cheap like cabbage.)
In play we have VC, who may or may not be dealt as an expiring but will certainly be gone by camp. That leaves ABrooks who did not cover himself with glory in his time here, to date. My preference is to peddle him to someone who wants a feisty, scoring PG and hopefully get someone more useful back.
If Lopez can get back to anything like he was he'll be a good second-string 5, and still easy on the payroll for the next year.
It's not that bad a set of guys - short on stars but long of teamwork and chemistry, witha PG who will get the most out of his teammates.
We're one good trade and a smart draft away from being a pretty good team, and on the road back to competition.
oooops - forgot Hak - well, I guess we'll use him where we can and hope for a way out. He won't be in favour with the announced commitment to defense, but if he ever committed to that and went after some boards he'd be very valuable. To someone

That might be a smart move for the Heat, the way he's basically Wade's bitch...
