It never ceases to amaze me how people can call LeBron one of the greatest talents or most skilled players in the league. He's neither. He's just a guy that is so physically gifted that he can impose his will under the right circumstances (open court, one-on-one). He has no post game, no mid-range game, and as many have stated, he doesn't play well off the ball at all. He's pretty much just a spectator when he gives up the ball.
The reason he gets a lot of assists is not that he has otherworldy court-vision (although his court vision is elite), it's that he always has the freaking ball in his hands. In many ways, Rajon Rondo is as effective a player, and does it with much less hoopla.
I would argue that Rondo is a LOT more effective than James as a play-maker. LeBron gets his teammates long range shots (which is why they failed him last year -- the rim shrinks in the playoffs), whereas Rondo breaks down the defense and gets his guys great looks from all over the court. This is exactly why Shaq went from having one of his most efficient seasons playing with Nash to having one of his worst playing with LeBron. He just wasn't getting the same great looks, and not all of that is on the coach either.
Anyway, regarding his mentality... from the wiretap...
James won’t get mad, and James won’t get even and make people pay a price. When opposing players hear people insist they ought to be respectful of James out of fear of retribution – be careful they don’t stir him with words – they privately giggle.
“Different guys are different,” Stevenson told Yahoo! Sports in a corner of the Mavericks’ locker room Thursday night. “Kobe Bryant feeds off stuff like that. He looks for it every time. LeBron’s a different kind of person. Obviously he’s a freak of nature, able to do a lot of things, but everybody in this league is built different.”
