I want to make the case for trading up and targeting the "other two" players who will make big impacts in the league: Enes Kanter and Brandon Knight.
In my dreams we'd make deals to get both the 3 & 4 picks, but we'd be lucky to get just one of these guys. I think Kanter will be a quality 5 in this league. He has the length skills and size to deliver a post game and range outside for scoring. Questions for sure on his defense and intensity, but he seems (by reports) to be a guy motivated to be great, so hopefully he will work hard to improve those things. Our greatest need right now (other than outside shooting) is a player who can make a difference in the post. We need a 5, and enes is certainly big enough to play that in today's NBA. For that reason Kanter should be our #1 target. But Knight is certainly 1A.
I believe Brandon Knight could become a better PG than Kyrie Irving. He may not be as flashy, but Knight already has a quality game on both sides of the ball, is a leader, and has all the intangibles to become a great PG. In a league that highly values PG's who can score, pass and defend, Knight is the man in this draft for that job. He's obviously very young, and still needs time to develop his distribution skills. But he's incredibly smart and dedicated. His progress in short bursts has been impressive.
So how can we get one of these guys? I doubt we have enough to offer, especially since the 9 & 19 won't be enough to move to 3 or 4. If Cleveland is unable to trade up to 2 in order to draft Irving and Williams, are they more inclined to deal the 4? If they are prone to take Williams at #1, I'd offer them the 19th, the 39th pick and DJ for the #4. That may not be enough value, but they get a young PG with some experience to pair with Williams, plus another pick that allows them to add depth. Their fans would probably howl at passing Irving, but they need Williams, who becomes the "new" King of Cleveland. Would I trade the 9 and DJ to get to #4? If Kanter is off the board to Utah, it would be a tough call, but I'd pull that trigger to get Knight.
Silas said you only trade up to get a star. No guarantees obviously, but I think both Kanter and Knight are borderline future star players. While I like other players later in this draft (Brooks, Vucevic) neither may become more than a solid reserve. I think that's the case with most players in this draft. But Kanter and Knight will demonstrate that they belonged in the same discussion of top-quality players as Irving and Williams. The coach speaks highly of DJ but I'm not convinced they really think he's THE MAN for the future at the 1; I know I'm not. Still we are starting over, and I doubt we "swing for the fences" with our picks or with a trade.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.
