Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
This has to be a 2+ year rebuilding plan if we are ever going to be an elite level team. BC should have done this in his first year but his ego and need for instant recognition got the best of him. It can be a true conflict of interest when a GM puts the needs of his career ahead of the long term success of the team. I hope he doesn't blow his load too quick again because cap flexibility is nice to have as other teams get desperate. If this organization focuses on trying to make the playoffs next year it will almost certainly mean many more years of a bad to mediocre team. We have to focus on a 2-3 year plan!

Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
i updated my OP to include Barbosa opting out because of the recent news. If he opts out it puts us at
42,904,072
meaning we have a ton of cap space and instantly become a huge contender in going after a guy like Marc Gasol, Greg Oden, Deandre Jordan, Etc.

I'd prefer to keep Stew and give Monte Morris
I'd really prefer to keep Morris and Stew and give the great Killian Hayes and 2nd round picks

no problem. Me too if we can swing for one of the defensive C's and draft Knight i would be thrilled. That and getting one of the many SF prospects next year this team would be on the right track.

Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
Here's the rookie scale for 2011-12, so once we select the player at 5, the cap hold will be at $2,900,100 (if I'm not mistaken), and the player will probably be signed for 120% of that.

so 3,248,112? That sounds pretty close IMO so i think your right. Ill update the OP with that number. Gives us an extra 150,000 or so to spend lol.

Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
from the latest Simmons article it looks like the existing cap is going to be done away with in the new CBA talks - My guess is that there is going to be a hard cap - simmons mentioned that the Spurs will lose 8.5 million this year - Average committed Salaries per team next year - $52 million - Hard Cap at $55 ? - If each team was able to re-negotiate existing deals or amnesty 1 contract most teams would be able to easily get under the cap - teams with issues - LA Lakers, Orlando (but amnesty Arenas and they fit under the cap), Boston, Miami, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta.
So assuming a hard cap of $55 million - and we trade/amnesty Jose Calderon - the Raps would be around $20 mill under the hard cap - easy enough space to add some pieces -

With all of the bad press/negativity, I'd have to think that Bargs would be amnestied not Caldy.

I still don't believe that there will be a hard cap. Players will give up money, shorter contracts, partially guaranteed contracts, stiffer penalty for exceeding cap, more revenue sharing...
Players will agree to all of those things before they allow a hard cap. And as long as the percentage of revenue gets reduced significantly they won't to.

You can also bet that rookie salaries will be cut drastically look for minimum 30% to 40%.
The amnesty is nice but really how many teams will use it????

That would be a waste, Bargs is very easily tradeable. Calderon not so much. And that said, I'd consider Amnestying Kleiza, since Calderon will be an expiring contract next offseason...

Why? Insurance pays for Kleiza's contract until he's back. Plus, Kleiza is getting about $4.6 million for the next 3 seasons (assuming he exercises his own option in his last season). That works out to about $13 million. Calderon is getting $9.8 and $10.5 over the next two. Yikes!

Teams should have the ability to trade their amnesty clause for a period of up to one year. So teams who've been fiscally prudent don't get punished for it.

Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
I would be that there's going to land on a hard cap plus a designated franchise player. I could see an NFL style franchise tag as well. All the small and mid sized teams are going to be pushing for that to prevent players from forcing their way out.
Calderon is a good amnesty candidate. If we're going to have a hard cap, I doubt that Barbosa opts out though. He'd be giving up money with the flood of free agents and dearth of cap space out there.
With our talent level, we should be way under the cap because we're so under talented.

Re: Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation
If there is a hard cap (like the owners want in place by the 13/14 season) then Toronto might be in a tough situation.
Bargs might make up 20% of that 13/14 cap by himself... and Amir+Kleiza could take up another 20% of the cap.
Not to mention DD is a FA that summer and could be looking for his first big payday... Raptors might not have the option to go over a cap to resign him so they had better be careful about what money they are spending these next two seasons.

Every team will be in the same position as us, not too worried about bargs contract. If there is a hard cap it will be phased in slowly plus I would expect some kind of salary roll back or something, grand father clause etc.

Not really ... we have enough flexibilty coming up in Barbosa and Jose's expiring. Even if a hard cap is implemented, there will be a 1-2 year transition period to give teams like LA/Dallas find a way to cut to their spendings. A hardcap could also mean a reduction in salary for players, meaning Andrea's salary will be cut down.

If we take Val in 5th that will free up his salary this year against the cap.

Bump.
Barbosa's decision could be huge. Think it's expected in a couple of days
