Deal with Suns close?

Post#1 » by dukeknicksirish » Sat Jun 18, 2011 10:03 pm

The Timberwolves have long been rumored to be shopping their No.2 overall draft pick for a proven veteran shooting guard or center.
One rumor earlier this month mentioned the possibility of a trade involving Suns center Marcin Gortat for Minnesota’s No. 2 pick.

Gortat for the Timberwolves’ No. 2 pick seems like an unbalanced trade, so the Suns’ No. 13 pick could also be involved. Even better, **fingers crossed**, a possible deal could involve point guard Steve Nash, who we said would be a perfect mentor for rookie point guard Ricky Rubio.

Update: 6/17 Chad Ford of ESPN.com reports the Suns are interested in this very scenerio.

“Phoenix is in hot pursuit of Williams and may have interest in a deal that would send Minnesota center Marcin Gortat and the No. 13 pick for the No. 2 pick and Nikola Pekovic.”

I would probably do that. 13 puts us in line to pick up one of the SGs, and Gortat is signed longterm for only $2 million more than Pekovic.

If Nash is coming, we can send Flynn there.

Nash& Gortat and we are fighting for the PO.

For the 8th seed? Maybe.

Yeah I think we'd make the playoffs (assuming Rambis is gone) but contending? No.

I'm going to bite into my table if we deal the #2 away for Gortat. He's a pretty good big man but nowhere close to being worth a #2 pick. Offensively, he benefited a lot from the greatness of Steve Nash.

If something like this went down I would shoot my load. This in my eyes is PERFECTION.We get a legit superstar ala be it in his twilight of his career, but he can help sellout the Target center and be a mentor for the next season or two while Rubio grows into hopefully a star starting PG.While we will also land a solid center with a ton of upside that's still in his twenty.

I would due this deal in a half a second flat if I was the Wolves.Give them the # 2 pick,Flynn,Darko or Pekovic,Ridnour and Webster.Hell I might even throw in whatever else along as we keep our core five in Love,Rubio,Beasley,Johnson and Randolph.

Two big problems I see with a deal like this is firstly the Suns would be giving up their face of their francishe which would be a very hard sell and would be a very clear sign to their fan base that their full on rebuild with alot of unproven talent. Then secondly Steve Nash himself,I doubt he would be to keen on playing with a Wolves team that even with him would have a hard time making the playoffs next season. He's 37 years old and wants to win a ring before he retires. But lastly he only has one season left on his contract. So in all likely hood we could be renting Nash for one year and lossing out on a lot of talent in Flynn,#2(Williams)...ect that could in theory land us a young star player with years left on a contract(Bogut,AI,Gay,Ellis..ect) or maybe in the case of Williams could turn out to be a star play on our own squad if we keep him.

This would be a very huge gamble that could blow up in our face if we just pretty much land Gortat,Nash leaves after this season and Rubio isn't ready to go as the starter in the 2012 season.

I'll be a little disappointed if Gortat and 13 is the package. I feel like we need a little bit more. He just doesn't excite me as much as some of the other names out there.

Well the update on the bottom line says a deal like this might go down.

Suns Get:
#2 pick
C-Nikola Pekovic

Wolves Get:
C-Marcin Gortat
# 13 pick

I don't know if I would due that deal as is.It would give us the center that we need and some more another pick that maybe we could use to draft a SG or us that and our other pick along side Flynn to land us that second tier star(AI,Ellis or Gay) which I think might be a hard thing to due without give up Beasley,Johnson or Randolph in a deal.

Uh, Gortat is a double-double center who plays good defense and has a nice pick and roll game. This would be a great trade for us to get a viable center. I feel like Beasley will be a much better player than Williams in the end anyway.

I would do it, and I'd probably add the 20 as well.

I think I would as well, now if we got Nash I would probably change my mind or at the very least throw in Childress whom could fill our void at SG for the season while we groom whomever we draft at SG.At the very least Childress would give us a solid back up SG.So if the deal is something like Nash/Gortat/#13 pick or Gortat/Childress/#13 pick for #2/Pek and whatever else I would probably due the deal.

I'd want more back. Too bad Grant Hill is a free agent, otherwise I'd include a Hill for some bench players swap.

I'd also rather have it be Darko instead of Pek. Pek has a different skillset that I think would complement Gortat. Darko is also more expensive, and might well become a bitchy whiner as soon as he's the backup.

edit: As I've been yammering about, my ideal addition is Marc Gasol. I'd much rather have him. There are a number of trades that I'd like for either vets or trading down in the lottery. However, if the "baseline" plan is to draft Williams (I agree with the projections that see him as becoming David West) and keep him, then I'd rather do some variation of this deal for Gortat and draft Burks/Brooks at 13.

I think is better use the Nash's salary money for get Marc Gasol and keep the #2.

Id love to get Marc gasol but we wont have enough money to sign him outright. Sign and trade would work but the #2 would almost certainly be included.
