Jays need a better message board

Post#1 » by Griff83 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 11:25 pm

The Raps have a massive following on a good website like Realgm.
The Leafs have a massive following on a good website like HFBoards.

The Jays message board on there main website is awful.
Hardly anyone use's the Realgm baseball section.

What prompted this topic? We're probably the most active baseball board on this site at the moment. We probably have the most and best team-specific blogs in the baseball world as well.

Being the most active on this site doesnt say much. Plenty of team dont even have any action on there board.

I just dont see why there isnt one big site like the Raps or Leafs have. It allows the fanbase to grow at a better pace when theres a very fluid and informative message board. When there isnt a game ongoing you'd be lucky to have more then 2 posts a hour on this site.

It depends what you're looking for from a message board.

Do you want quality or quantity? Personally , I started posting here because there seems to be a good mix of both.

The forum I used to post on slowly dwindled to nobody, eventually briging me here.

Hfboards for hockey has too many people, you read a game day thread and theres 500 to 1000 posts to be read, which is rather annoying. There is also more trolls, more of a chance of less knowledgeble fans and less of a chance of your or someone elses opinion to be discussed.

I think the Brewers have the most active baseball board on RealGm.

Frankly, I like having a smaller board with as few retards as possible. As Hoopstarr said, there are a surprising number of good, but fairly small, Jays boards and blogs out there, but if they were condensed into a single site, it'd probably be a clusterf*ck.

I kind of wish the Raptors board isn't as big as it is now. If it's game day or if there are any big transactions there's literally 100+ pages of posts to go through. People that tend to avoid those threads (like myself) have no choice but to throw out the baby with the bath water because it's so tedious and time-consuming to go through so many useless posts to get to those that actually provide insight.

I like this Jays board because I think it's a right mix of activity, quality and quantity.

There are more than enough quality blog communities and forums to post about the Jays online. If you don't think so, you haven't looked hard enough.

And I much prefer this place to the Raptors board.

useless thread is useless. plenty of places to talk jays ball, both for the casual and really hardcore fan. this board imo is pretty solid. no standout idiots, several knowledgeable posters.

Yeah I can't imagine what you're looking for that you're not getting here, perhaps a reason to brag to your friends about how you post on some super-popular board? You're not likely to find one with the collection of knowledge, insight and banter as this one.

I actually think we're in a very hard to achieve sweet spot of attributes I listed above; I loathe the day that the Jays turn it around in a big way and all the bandwagoners show up and make this popular like the Raps board. I don't think we'll be as bad them (for reasons I'm not about to share) - but I definitely intend on enjoying it while it lasts. You should too - or take sideshow's advice and get your own started...

+ 1

Most posters here are good other than that guy who always wants the team to bunt. The Jays also have several fan blogs. The closest thing to a big website so to speak is the comments section of Drunk Jays Fans.

Many years ago I designed and ran messageboard(s) for an online game.
I can tell you from firsthand experience that there is a fine line when it comes to being a quant enjoyable online community compared to transforming into an overpopulated drop-in center for all types (good and bad). It's easy to feel as though you can pick and choose some sort of middle ground but with alot of forums it's a pandora's box situation. Once it teeters over the top and starts pulling in a larger amount of traffic, before you know it that board(s) become a breeding ground for trolls, spam and alot of nonsense in general.

I like this messageboard. With it's small(er) size it gives more of a online friend sort of atmosphere. You see a name post and you actually notice it, remember it, have an idea what sort of personality is behind the keyboard and the history they have on this board. When it comes to topics like the OP made it really is cliche-ish but it trully comes down to quality over quantity.

Ditto. I like having a smaller number of people who actually know the game of baseball and dont throw around stupid options or ideas. As for the Raps board, I havent posted there in probably 3-4 years, cannot stand all of the useless threads and even more useless posters.

Between this board, BB Banter and Battersbox, I think I have everything I need.

A lot of quality on all the sites and I like having a small number of intelligent posters here as opposed to the dumbasses on the blue jays forum.

No offense to any blue jays forum members.

Yeah I agree with all of this. The Raptors board is just a **** these days, and it's too bad. I still visit it because it's always on top of any breaking news, but I can't be bothered to sift through threads anymore.

Truth be told I'd kind of like it if there was a little bit more activity here on the Jays board, but I'd much rather it stayed at this level than that of the Raps board.

What everyone else said, I like this place for intelligent discussion.

DJF and Batters Box are also worthwhile but stay away from the Jays MLB forum.

Yeah, Battersbox is great at the niche that it fills, as is DJF, as is Jays Journal, as is Tao of Stieb, etc. It's better having sites like those that can cater to the various subsections of the Jays' fanbase...combined, the angry, sometimes absurdist ranting of DJF and the stat geekery of Battersbox would be a horrible mix, but separate they're both excellent.
