Post#1 » by 5DOM » Sun Jun 19, 2011 3:29 pm

@BlueJays
Blue Jays-Official

@Bluejays have signed SS YUNEL ESCOBAR to an extension for the 2012 and 2013 seasons worth US $10 million (five per season). The deal includes two club options of US $5 million each for each of 2014 and 2015.

that is a great deal... i'm happy we *finally* get to have stability at the SS position.. Maybe i'll post back later and try to list all the SS's that has played for the Jays over the past decade or so..

was expecting this. Escobar made 3 million in his first arbitration year, 10 million sounds pretty fair for his 2nd and 3rd arby years, even that's probably a bit of a steal. The real value could come from those options if Escobar is still a quality shortstop by 2014. 5 million a year doesn't get you anything on the free agent market, JJ Hardy who is a comparable player could make twice that amount and get more years in Free Agency this offseason

Another good extension by Alex!

What a great deal.

Key pieces locked in long-term by AA:
Bautista
Lind
Escobar
Romero

All at pretty reasonable deals given their performance. Very impressed with AA's signings and trades thus far. Now if only he could clear some of the deadweight to make way for our deserving minor leaguers...

To me he's another foundation piece for us. This year I've seen him get much more consistent on defense and his ability to get on base has become elite for a short stop.

We're using him in our leadoff spot because of his OB% skills, but to me he's really a perfect #2 hitter in front of Jose and Lind. Either way he's a table setter.

Locking him up and getting us that stability in the top of the order is going to pay dividends for us.

He has the potential for some pretty gaudy power numbers too (for a shortstop, at least). I could see his .OPS over .800 during those option years. $5M/per for a .800 OPS shortstop with above average defense is spectacular value.

Another source, not that it's needed since it was over the Blue Jays official twitter account.

I misread it. It's really a 4 year deal for $20 million and only $10M guaranteed. We're getting 2 years of free agency from him plus his arbitration years locked up. What a steal for us.

I love AA's frequent use of the team option. Perfect deal.

Wow. Another great deal by AA.

Now we just need to lock up Morrow.

Hard to say. So far AA has rewarded consistency of good play with signings. Morrow hasn't been very consistent at all. I still think he's going to be great (his stuff, when he's on, is just downright filthy), but he's not there yet.

But that kind of works in our favour at the negotiation table, right? If they feel he'll get there but just hasn't locked it in yet, we'll be able to point to his inconsistencies as to why we offer him a similar deal to Esco or Romero's.

At least I'd hope that's the case.

This is a fantastic deal. He's probably a top 6 or 7 short-stop in baseball and he is a two-way player. 2/10 for his remaining arbitration years is probably on the lower end of what he would have gotten had he gone year-to-year in 2012 and 2013. On top of that he has team options for the same amount in 2014 and 2015? I'm sold.

Another very good extension by this team, the options are great. Also maintains some much needed swag on this team for the next few seasons.

I cannot find any fault with this deal, whatsoever.
The price is great value. The term is good, in the sense that if , for whatever reason, things don't work out, he isn't locked up for some ongodly length of time and yet there's those two years to fiddle around with (once again, potentially for a bargain price) should he be a long term keeper.
