Williams ended two games with game winning blocks. I agree that Williams hasn't shown he can guard a 3. Williams is however about the same size of Blake Griffin, and has a better standing reach that a lot of PF's. He should be able to guard PF's just fine.
Regarding JaVale, he did make a positive impact on defense. As I recall, the difference was about 1 point per 100 possessions improvement over Armstrong, Yi, Blatche, and Seraphin, who backed him up. On a team with a single decent defensive backup center, McGee would have been a net negative.
To each their own however.
