Why are the Lakers so stupid?

Post#1 » by dhh2h » Tue Jun 21, 2011 5:25 am

Just realized that the pick we traded to New Jersey along with Sasha for Joe Smith was a 1st round #27 pick!!

For those of you that know your draft stuff

We could have drafted Reggie Jackson! Nolan Smith! Norris Cole! Josh Selby! Darius Morris! Any one of these point guards could have been ours. Reggie Jackson is a BEAST. And the Miami Heat are projected to take him with the 31st pick!! That angers me so much that we could have potentially had him Ugh

That's not really true though. If the Lakers are do desperate to get one of those picks they could simply take the money they saved, ramp it up, and get that pick back and then some. If they're willing to spend it that 9m could be used to buy two first round picks. I hate when they penny pinch though and 27 is ideal for Nolan Smith.

hindsight is 20/20. at the time the trade was made, the lakers were favorites to 3-peat and had/have the highest payroll in the league. they got rid of the pick to avoid paying the guaranteed contract that comes with a first rounder. it was a good move back then because the lakers didn't have a use for a first round player, they already had a championship team so no need to rebuild through the draft just yet, and they get to save money.

it's easy to say it was a stupid trade NOW after the playoffs really exposed the lakers point guard problems, but it wasn't that bad of an idea when it was completed.

8mil for a bottom 5 1st round pick will always be a good move.

I never liked the Sasha trade. As much as he messed up on offence alot with his ill-advised shots, he was usable.
We gave away A GUARD who was in a contract year. He was giving Kobe / Fish a rest at times, preety feisty on D at times & was way more serviceable than that dinosaur Smith we got in exchange.

Wasn't he an expiring contract soon anyways? Couldn't we just have kept the pick and sasha and just let him come off the books at the end of the season?

The trade helped with the luxury tax, the main reason for the trade.

Especially when you can easily buy back in at around $3 mil and if it looks like no one you want would be there, you save the guaranteed money of a first round pick.

We also could have drafted Paul Milsap or Sergio Rodriguez or traded up from our pick to get Rondo. No one expected him to be the monster PG that he is (hence being drafted 21). The top 5 picks that draft?

Was clearly a money move to save money. Looking back, it was a bad move. We could of used Sasha in the dallas series and we could really use that pick in the draft. I really hope they package some of their 2nd round picks and cash for a late 1st.

Reggie Jackson is going to be a BEAST. He is purposely not really working out with teams in order to hurt his stock and hopefully get onto the Heat which is the best situation for him. I HOPE we get a 25-30 pick to snatch either him or Nolan up before the Heat do at 31

Apparently Boston is taking him at 25. If there is any truth to that we would at least have to move ahead of Boston.

Wouldn't have been hard to move ahead of Boston. Still they have the money. Worst comes to worst you just pay a little more than 3m (first grab a second then pay 3m) and we can get the pick back.

This is assuming that everyone of those prospects are going to pan out.

Reggie Jackson isnt a beast, he's not NBA ready. The real beast is Charles Jenkins out of Hofstra. 6'3 / 217 PG/SG with an NBA ready body. He would be an explosive force off LA's bench with his nonstop hustle, ability to penetrate and draw fouls and knock down the three-pointers. He is a solid defender with his rock solid build and would help this team ALOT !!!

Hes said to go in the late second round @ 47 or 48. The Lakers hold the 41 / 46 /56 / 58 picks and should snatch Jenkins AS SOON AS ITS THEIR TURN (and if hes still available)

They could all be horrible, and they would still be better than Derek Fisher at this point. And then theres the chance that we draft a keeper. Rondo went in the 20's, what makes you think we cant find a franchise PG too? You have to take risks to get the big rewards, and this isn't even a big risk we don't have to trade any players

people still on this Sasha boat? Lets get back to reality here, Sasha wasn't going to change that series, if anything he would've been worse, he is horrible at guarding speed given his idiotic way of playing up on speed guards and his shooting wasn't going to get much better, his stats in NJ is misleading, he got the green light to shoot anytime he wanted he wouldn't have gotten that luxury here.
