Flyers Trade Carter To Columbus, Richards To LA

Post#1 » by WEFFPIM » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:07 pm

Jeff Carter has been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for restricted free agent to-be Jakub Voracek, the eighth-overall pick in Friday’s draft in Minnesota and Columbus’ third-round selection according to multiple reports.

Carter, 26, starts an 11-year $58 million extension this season. He notched that extension with the Flyers last season in the final year of his three-year, $15 million deal. The move is clearly a way of clearing cap space with the intention of signing Bryzgalov, the 31-year-old workhorse netminder.

EDIT: Richards Deal

The overhaul of the Philadelphia Flyers continued on Thursday, as the club shipped captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings.

Richards, who was named captain of the Flyers in 2008, is coming off a season where he scored 23 goals and 66 points.

The 26-year-old forward had a career high 31 goals in 2009-10.

Coming back to the Philadelphia are forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds.

How legit is Schenn btw? I know he's supposed to be a pretty major prospect but how major?

Geez... There goes the majority of the Philly offense. I was a little worried about Philly getting a legit goalie, but feel better now with them losing both Richards AND Carter.

The Flyers just got much better, especially moving forward. Both of those trades were absolute steals.

These trades opens up ice time for youngsters Claude Giroux, James van Riemsdyke and Ville Leino, not to mention they still have veterans Zherdev, Versteeg, and Briere. Also, Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmons and Jacub Voracek are all sick young forward with uploads of talent. Simmons in particular fits right into the Philly's physical style of play. Voracek has some of the best hands in the league and is ready to bust out playing on a good team with good linemates and Brayden Schenn is a superstar in the making. Not to mention three 1st round draft picks coming back to Philly. They also still have Chris Pronger on the blue line. If anything, WATCH OUT for Philly moving forward as they just locked up one of the best goalies in the league and absolutely stacked up their forward corps moving forward. Carter and Richards were both under-performing and had party/attitude/discipline problems. Sure they lost 2 of their top forwards but they gained 3 very good forwards who are all 23 years or younger and are going to improve, while already being good enough to produce. They signed an elite goalie and they have a butt load of first rounders. Philly knows how to draft well - watch out.

Philly just got stacked.
Go Raps!!

Brutal deal for Richards, it doesn't even make sense. Simmonds is nothing more than a 3rd line player, and Schenn could potentially one day be on the same level as Richards. Sorry, but there's no 'steal' there.

Pierre Gauthier better have Homer on the phone offering Gomez and Spacek for Pronger and Giroux right now. You trade Richards and Carter just to get Ilya freakin' Bryzgalov under contract, and for 9 years!? I can understand getting a Thomas/Rinne/Price, but Bryzgalov? Wow.

I like Wayne Simmonds, and Schenn is just potential right now. Voracek is Andrei Kostitsyn on a cheaper deal (inconsistent), and this deal only works if Dougie Hamilton drops to them, which I doubt.

What a mess for Philly, wow.

I can understand the Carter trade, and it's fair/decent value. However, what are they thinking dealing Mike Richards? I still don't get it.

On another note, if rumours are true that the Leafs had a package of Kadri/Kulemin in place, did they really pass that up for Simmonds/Schenn? I know you don't want to deal Richards to the East, but c'mon.

I'd take the Kings package over Kadri/Kulemin any day.

I knew they were going to have to deal one of Carter/Richards but I did not see this coming. They got great value for both of them, but trading your best 2 forwards so you can lock up a 31 year old goalie doesn't make much sense. I just don't get why they dealt Richards, if they would of kept him they'd be the best team in the league on paper.

The Richards trade is pretty damn shaky. They certainly are going with youth and potential.

Ya it looks that way. Why they locked up Bryz for so long is beyond me, that contract is going to kill them in a few years.

Schenn isn't that much better than Kadri, and you're severely underrating Kulemin. You're talking about a guy that just scored 30 goals, and was a +7 on a horrendous defensive team. After Kessel, he's probably the Leafs best player.

Is it just me or have the Flyers become the Coyotes, essentially? I mean, who will score consistently for them now, Giroux? Versteeg? Briere? I can understand trading Carter, but both Carter and Richards is absurd to me.

Like the deal for Columbus, not like they need any more young guys in there and they finally give Nash a second scoring threat. Love the deal for LA, who finally gets their big forward.

My thoughts exactly. This is a huge gamble for the Flyers, if those young guys don't step up and score over the next two years the Flyers are screwed.

Simmonds is incredible and Schenn is one of the highest rated prospects in hockey right now. How is Kadri/Kulemin a better package?

Schenn is alot better than Kadri, alot better. Right now Schenn's the best prospect not in the NHL right now. And its not Simmonds is trash either, solid two way player, good skater, and he plays with a ton of energy. Even if he doesn't get much better guys like him are tough to find.

No doubt Schenn/Simmonds is the better package. Schenn is a ridiculously complete center, major potential and Simmonds is a guy you just love to have on your 2nd line. Too much uncertainty with Kadri to do take the Leafs package IMO.
