The Wizards selected Yawn Vecsey ... errr, Jan Veseley.
Safe pick. We'll see. Ordinarily I'd blast Ernie, but I guess this guy will be pretty good. That's all I've got.

I don't know... I like the pick for some reason. It'll be fun for sure.

Re: Slather me, Lather me, Blather me - Draft Thread 5
I'm a little bit irritated that we didnt trade down, with Knight available, I think we could have swung a nice deal, but I think as has been clear for the last few days, the teams board almost certainly read:
1. Williams
2. Kantner
3. Valunciunas
4. Vesely
Or something of that sort, and then a huge tier drop from there. So I suppose the team didn't like the options available if we did a trade down (probably viewed them as similar value to the 18th pick). I'm glad we'll have the 18th pick anyway.
Hopefully by the end of the coming season we'll know exactly who we have in McGee, will he have made another developmental leap forward and negated the need to get a Kantner? If he does, then we did the right thing tonight, and it's very possible that he will, of course we still need Vesely to get the job done for it to be complete, but in the end, I like what the scouts generally think of Vesely, and I'm just going to have to hope with the rest of us, that the scouts are right, and that the metrics people and posters here are underrating him (although at least the Synergy metrics people apparently found that Vesely did, statistically speaking, play quality defense).
Let's hope we don't make a moronic pick at 18, and hell, maybe buy another pick. This draft has 10-12 guys available between 12-28 or so that really look special. I'd love to steal Norris Cole to be Wall's backup with a late first rounder if possible.
Sympathy out to Ruzious from me as well. I came back from the first vacation I've taken in seven years two weeks ago to discover a layoff notice from my school in the mail. They laid off myself and half the rest of the staff, they're cutting costs, hiring first year teachers on the cheap, and keeping the cheapest teachers on staff. Wonderful way to come back from vacation let me tell you, even better, I had Sinus surgery yesterday (part of the reason my posting has been wack).
Cheer up though, we still got two picks, and as another poster mentioned, the second the lottery screwed us, and freaking rewarded the jazz and the clippercavs, that combined with half of the first tier prospects in the draft staying in school totally screwed us. To me anyway, this draft was all about the big 3, as well as Barnes, Sully, and the stud from Baylor that's clueless. Those 3 being in it would have guaranteed a legit player for us. After they begged off, suddenly a hodgepodge of college guys valued as slot 11 to 21 type talents suddenly, guys that I bash like Marcus Morris, guys like Klay Thompson, and yes even Knight, Walker, and freaking Fredette wouldn't be sniffing top 8-10 land. But they are. To me, that's why Vesely, or Valunciunas had to be the pick, the rest of the options screamed, "you can get these guys in any draft between slots 10 and 20" which is where we'll be drafting for another two years anyway, and considering that the past two drafts feature 3 guys taken exactly in that range (Booker, Seraphin, and the 18 slot this year, and possibly even 34 this year), I don't see the point in swinging for shallow right field with a Marcus Morris or Kawhi Leonard type pick (though I'm curious about Leonard, if he could learn to shoot, he could be scary good), I'd rather swing for the fences. This team absolutely has to hit a home run or grand slam to get in position to win titles/contend consistently, we probably only have this draft, and next, possibly 2 more to find that guy. We aren't getting that player in free agency unless we're absolutely special by the end of '12-'13, and we weren't going to be special with a cautious pick at 6.
I'm glad we decided to swing away, hopefully in time we'll see that we launched it into the upper deck (and not in foul territory), if not, hopefully its as good as another pick would have likely been at 6 (which is what I view most of the other players being speculated about).

Cramer wrote:I don't know...I was called a hater but if we end up with Vesely I don't think it's the end of the world. Ain't excited but apparently the Wiz have wanted him for a while so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt (yea, I'm an idiot) and assume they know what they're doing. Even if he ends up being a piece of **** he's our piece of ****. Can't say I'm excited about pick number 6 though. I wasn't sold on Kanter either so if we aren't getting Williams, it is what it is, and McGee and #6 (plus 34?) would have been way too much. I guess I'm drinking until about pick 13 and then getting the game face on.
If nothing else, Wall on the break with Vesely on one wing and McGee on the other should lead to some nice You Tube clips........and Sullinger this time next year.
This.
Let's have another season. Stink another year. Get Flip fired. And draft well in 2012.

Don't get the Brandon Knight fascination. Great, a skinny 6-3 combo. I might have traded down to get Klay Thompson. Maybe we'll get Alec Burks at 18, though he appears to be lacking a consistent jumper.

In the wake of all this wailing and gnashing of teeth, I'm OK with the pick and look forward to seeing Vesely on the court. I'm guessing his shot improves consistently over the next two years.

I would have taken Brandon Knight and traded John Wall into better than what Cleveland drafted or what Charlotte or Sacramento parlayed on draft day.
Just was listening to Chad Ford on ESPN radio a little prior to the draft. GMs tend to overvalue what they have and undervalue what other teams have. I think like this: Knight is not Wall, but Knight is compared to Billups. I MIGHT HAVE conceived of a deal to trade Wall to the Knicks along with Blatche and got back Billups, Fields, and multiple picks INCLUDING keeping Brandon Knight.
OR, MORE LIKELY, I would have drafted Knight just to package him with Andray Blatche this season.

lets move up and take Klay Thompson.
Brandon Knight was the BPA. We are in no position not to be taking a BPA at this point

Doubtful, I suspect the great mind (aka - GMEG) will select some obscure Euro guy again...

I am definitely not worthy. Thanks to you, CCJ, and everyone else with the kind wishes. It really feels good to have your support.
But it's a time for celebration - it's the year of The Flying Ostrich! Jan Vesely - welcome to the capital of the world!!!
And Jan, please remember you're here to help the Wiz win basketball games; not to figure out how to win dunking contests.
