I was really hoping to get a late 1st/2nd rounder for Bertans, that kid is a very skilled scorer at SF (not just a Kapono-like shooter). Turnover prone, but he's just 18, and looks similar to a guy like Quincy Miller as a scorer. Could definitely be a huge steal.

I don't know why so many are slamming this pick. Valanciunas looks to have the physical tools to be an excellent C and, once he bulks up, could be a force in the paint with that wingspan. This is the same player that the Spurs were offering Parker to trade up to try and get. All in all, he was the BPA and really a no brainer for Colangelo. Cleveland is going to regret passing on him at 4.

CNNSI "scout's take" on Valanciunas

SCOUT'S TAKE: "He probably has the most upside of any European guys coming in the draft. Very good size. He's kind of gangly right now, but with his length and his ability right now to play ... you can see he has some solid moves, has a pretty good up-and-under [move], can finish around basket, is very good up and down the court. He's young, but if he puts on some weight he could mess around and be a really good player. With his position and the stuff he does, he conceivably could be better than Marc Gasol. He could be Pau Gasol-ish. He's pretty skilled right now. If he gets stronger, I could see him being an All-Star."

The front court of Davis and Valanciunas has the chance to be very Randolph/Gasol like in my opinion.

What exactly do you mean by identity and image? We got a tough, rebounding, defensive big man. Did you want Donatas Motiejunas instead?

Davis is nowhere near as good as Randolph offensively.

you're right we need to change our identity... and by hiring a strong defensive coach, and bringing in a 19-year old elite level rebounding C with great length and two-way potential (and many of the same qualities that make Amir/Ed so valuable to us, but with legit C size), that's a huge step towards changing that identity.

Its hard to get excited about any player outside of Irving or Williams.

While we have spent the last month or so picking the guy we wanted and justifying how great they were to ourselves the reality is that the majority of this draft was filled with some intriguing talent that that was horribly flawed in one way or another.

Valanciunas was a pick I wasn't ready for simply because much like the Ed Davis pick I simply didn't think he would be on the board at 5.

We are a team light on talent and at five I wanted the BPA.
Is Valanciunas the BPA based on who went before him? Its hard to tell because the draft class was so terrible but he was certainly in the discussion.

I will reserve judgment till I see him play in the context of an NBA game

Honest question, do you really see Colangelo trading away Bargnani?

I just don't see it. He trades Bargnani, he's admitting the mistake. Then people will question his decision to select Jonas (don't like the pick at all btw).

LOL.

Laughing at this **** who think that Brandon Knight is going to be an elite PG.

Elite PG's can use their left hand at least decently well. This guy is going to be a 6th man at best,

Too many whities. White people are soft. They're also less athletic.
