Alec Burks discussion thread
I like to make new threads when finding a video or some info about someone that i would like to discuss, but a lot of people have a cow about it. So if you want, we can just discuss him here.
I'll start by posting this 2010-2011 Alec Burks video:

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
I like him, he's a pure scorer with the ability to create for himself which is something every good team has. You have to have a guy who can get himself to the rim, or get to the free-throw line and convert once he gets there, and Burks has that potential. He also gives us some speed and athleticism from the wing.
A real plus his is ball handling and rebounding, I like the idea that he can grab the rebound (one of the best rebounders from the wing in college last year) and start the break by himself.

He's good, very talented. Should have gone higher, tons of potential. Not sure about the fit. Doesn't really seem to do any of the things the Jazz want their SGs to do and the team's defense already sucks...

I hate putting this comparison up, but ill be damned if he doesnt remind of dwyane wade. Excited about the pick, I though from the very beginning he was going to the bucks at 10. Glad he was there at 12.

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
As for prior players that played for the Jazz in the past, He reminds me of Ronnie Brewer in that he can finish at the basket, but he is a much better ball hander able to create his own shot. Brewer is probably better defensively. Outside shooting will be the key as neither are good long distance shooters. Brewer had a physical injury that made him unable to improve his shooting, but Burks doesnt have that problem and Hornancek should help him alot.
As for players currently throughout the league, The best comparison would be Harden of OKla City.

Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
As Bat pointed out, he was a great rebounder for a shooting guard averaging 6.5 per game and he is also a willing passer averaging 2.9 per game which is pretty good for a SG from what I understand.
Also, based on the interview between ESPN and Coach Corbin, it sounds like he was high on their board and they were surprised he was available at the #12.
I just love his ability to create his own shot. We need that big time. I think he has great length and his dunks are fun to watch haha. Nice alley-oops in that first video.

I had the same thought, right down to hesitating to make the comparison. So that's his absolute ceiling.
He also reminds me of Marcus Thornton. I'd be happy if he falls somewhere between those two.

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
I have no idea where the Dwayne Wade comparisons come from considering he doesn't play a lick of defense and is pretty small for his size...but sure, whatever you guys say. Wade is a once in a few decade kind of players so going that far with the comparison...well, don't get your hopes up.

Do you mean his musculature? He just hasn't hit an NBA-caliber doping program yet. There's only so much a college kid can do at Colorado. While I'm not sure the Jazz have access to whatever LeBron and Dwyane Wade are on, I'm sure he'll bulk up appropriately.

Also, check out Burks' Advanced stats:
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/pla ... sal01.html
His True Shooting percentage as a Freshman was 62.2%. As a Soph it went down to 57.4%. Obviously his TS% is helped a lot by his free throws, but that's no reason to discount the metric (at least in my eyes).
He shot a respectable 35% on threes his Freshman year, but that dropped to 29% as a Soph. (Similar to what happened with Hayward)

Ha ha everyone keeps forgetting that Jerry Sloan is no longer here. We dont know what Ty will want his SGs to do.
It is safe to say that the Jazz may not have ever had a player with Burks potential at the 2. So i would look for Ty to find a way to help him fit in the offense. THey wouldn't have picked him if that wasn't the case.

I agree. Ty has a few different tools to work with and we really can't say who fits or not yet. This is Corbin's first offseason as head coach and can finally have some time to think about what he wants to do.

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
I think Burks will be a ok shooter. He was a good ft shooter at 82.5, he'll have to tweak a few things and he should be fine. I haven't seen him play much but his ceiling sounds like a brandon Roy - Tyreke Evans and his low would be a Keith began - courtney lee?

Re: Alec Burks discussion thread
Jamal Crawford perhaps? 2 guard that can fill in at one, good ball handler an passer but really a scorer through and through. Sub the three point shooting for an ability to get to the line, I could see them playing similar roles.

I think Burks is an all-star. Utah and Rockets must be laughing that they got Burks and Motiejunas where they did. As usual, good franchises like Utah, Houston, Spurs make the good decisions, bad franchises like Minny, my Raptors, Bobcats crap their pants in failure...

He really is a big time athlete, it doesn't always show, but I think he has close to top tier athleticism.

Jason Richardson comparison, I think his ceiling could Jrich, Dwade is seriously out of the conversation but, and I doubt he is the phenomenal athlete that Jrich is too, but Burcs does have alot of athleticism he looked nice in that video/making difficult shots look easy. I can see him extending his range pretty easily.

I'm torn. I want the Raptors to be good because their fans deserve it, but I would really miss the hilarious self-loathing sigs on RealGM. I still laugh out loud thinking about the "Season Ticket Cancellations: 1-800-Raptors" one.
