Re: Welcome to the Knicks Iman Shumpert
If he can come in for 24mpg average 8-9ppg 1-2spg and make the opposing perimter scorers work I am fine with that. The Knicks needed more of a defending SG than a scoring one, they have STAT and Melo to score.

Re: Welcome to the Knicks Iman Shumpert
Scouting Iman Shumpert was easy to translate him into the NBA, the NY Knicks every year seem able to find the diamond in the rough. The Phoenix Suns were set to take Iman at 13 and like so many teams at the last moment decided a different fortune.
There are people in Phx that believe the Iman pick was preplanned as trade bait, but it is simply a big grade up from Landy Fields whom was a great find last year.
I had Iman as the 9th best player in the draft, depending on whether your team is offensive or defensive based.
He just has so many weakside intangibles on offense for a team to continue to build from and defense he was the best lockdown guard in the draft.

Why would it be stagnant? Don't let the playoff's cloud things, the Knicks weren't healthy.

Re: Welcome to the Knicks Iman Shumpert
My feelings on Shumpert are that, as the best athlete, he could really impress early on. However, he doesn't really fit our team short or long term. I'm wondering if this is a showcase draft i.e. if he was drafted simply for his value as an asset and we will look to move him this year for a young part that fits better.

People whining need a reality check. This draft was a total crap shoot after about pick 8 or 9. We walked away with a guy who projects to be a very good defensive guard and has some upside offensively. At 17 that is excellent value in a weak draft. Shut the hell up already...

There was no Jordans or Kobe's falling in our laps at 17. We drafted a player who can contribute right away and fill a huge need. I ain't even mad.

Contribute right away? that's debatable. Lets see if he improves his basketball IQ in the next months or so because I really doubt DAntoni is going to give this kid much burn this season.

First, some fans gotta stop obsessing about Pringles. ON the real he might not be here past this season. Look forward.
Second, Dantoni won't have a choice but to play Shumpert. We don't have the luxury since we don't have depth. Walker is a slouch so as long as Shumpert just comes in with some form of hunger he'll be higher on the depth chart. Fields wasn't exactly a lights out shooter and Dantoni played him...

Yes I think right away he can contribute. He might not start from the start but he can get some minutes as a reserve guard off the bench to harrass opposing players.
We didn't think Fields would amount to anything at first and he was a second round pick. He not only contributed but also started for us. I think Shumpert can at least give us something we need.

Re: Welcome to the Knicks Iman Shumpert
Here's towelie's patented analysis:
Shumpert was low on my draft board too, as I'm sure a lot of others. Questionable IQ, questionable jumpshot, but can jump out of the gym.
But look at who was available at our pick. No one we coveted dropped. Hell, both Morris brothers were picked above us, while most expected one to at least fall.
At 17, it pretty much came down to Faried, Shumpert, or Brooks for me. I was leaning toward Brooks of those 3, but none of them scream game-changer or future starter here. Faried was intriguing just for his rebounding prowess but it would also mean more Amar'e at C, which I never want to see again. Brooks may have a more complete offensive game than Shumpert, but he's not gonna be the next Kobe, and on this team, our SG will only be called to hit an open J and defend.
I'm fine with Shumpert and will just hope that those jumpshots he made at the Knicks workout that impressed our scouts were not just a fluke. One good praise I'll throw on D'Antoni -- he can turn a lot of players into good shooters...everyone except ared effries. Let's hope he can sprinkle some of that same magic dust on Shump.

The differnece being that Fields has A+ BBall IQ. He picked up the offense really quickly. Didn't make too many mistakes and knew how to play his role. What makes people think Iman will do the same when he's known to have poor BBALL IQ?
I honestly just don't get it..I really don't...

Yup that's how I see him. I don't see him as an NBA point at all. Andre is a good comparison point except I think Shumpert could become a much better shooter eventually.

anybody else kind of happy this is walsh's last pick for us.
According to multiple sources, Walsh took a poll of the Knicks' war room, of all the scouts and basketball staff, and there was a split between Shumpert and Singleton. Walsh then turned to Mike D'Antoni, who said he wanted Shumpert. That's when Walsh declared, "Shumpert is the pick" and the selection was submitted.

the whole draft day is a fast paced event that he is not capable of handling..getting beat by the nets for the 31 pick is inexcusable

Re: Welcome to the Knicks Iman Shumpert
Pharmcat, Brooks isn't really a shooter either. He's a scorer. So I don't get what your point is there...
We weren't getting an exact fit at 17. Some of you need to realize this. The great shooting 2/3 or 2/1 with great defense wasn't going to be available at 17. Shumpert is a very good approximation though...

Absolutely. He takes very few risks come draft time. I feel if we brought Pritchard here before this draft, we may even have moved up or taken Marshon Brooks from the Mavs the way the Nets had.

Wow one of Zeke's guys likes a player from Illinois what a surprise.
Appearing on ESPN moments after making the pick, former East Leyden star Glen Grunwald, the Knicks’ interim president, said about Shumpert: ‘‘We want to be better defensively. We loved his size, strength and athleticism. He’s going to fit in nicely with our team.’’
