Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
looking at his stats from Eurobasket...
his stats rebound, block shots, ft numbers are good ...
he needs to get stronger so that he can afford to get fouled more .. if he can do that he will get more points, but he looks like he's fearless around the rim.

Celtics fan here, this mourning Danny Ainge came on local Radio WEEI and was asked who would be franchise players or just the best players in this draft. He mentioned D williams first but then said your guy with some flattering comparisons. When the link comes up I will post if you want.

Almost 7 feet, 7'4 wingspan, 71% shooting from the field, good motor, good rebounder, 19 years old.
What's not to like?
Oh, we could have had Biyombo, Knight, Walker? They have huge questions marks around their games.
I just hope the fans give this guy a chance.
I'm just glad BC and the organization will give him a chance. Don't really care what the casual fans think. In a couple years when Jonas is one of the better young Cs in the game, they'll jump on the wagon and pretend to have always liked the pick.

Val certainly looks smooth. Also tough, active and composed. And long. Liking it.
U18 so this is the equivalent of HIgh School in the US, right?

His length and quickness are what impress me the most. People in other threads are complaining that the guy doesn't show off a 40 inch vertical, but frankly if you're 7' with a 7'4" wingspan, you don't need to jump all that high to get the job done. And lifting your arms and hopping will always, always be quicker than lifting your arms and jumping. Playing fundamental defense relies much more on getting into position as quickly as possible than it does on lift. And unlike Bargnani, he seems to show good instincts when it comes to positioning too.

+1
He is long and in the video I see toughness. He has a good foundation to build off of. Casey should be able to work with him.

Another thing I notice too is that he knows how to use his length for rebounding. Watching some of these highlight videos, some conclude that Val "doesn't know how to box out, etc". My interpretation is that he's getting lots of rebounds he has no business getting.

Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
Remember also guys, Jonas Valanciunas was one of the best-rated players in Hollinger's recent draft rater story:
He had him 4th on his big board.
My Euroleague translations say two players in this year's draft, Jonas Valanciunas and Nikola Mirotic, would be rotation players immediately if they came to the States. Valanciunas rated higher, with a translated PER of 14.70 (albeit in limited minutes) compare to 13.66 for Mirotic. Of perhaps more importance is that Mirotic is contractually bound to stay in Europe for a few more years. He'd be a top-10 pick on my board if it weren't for that; as it is, I've dropped him behind all the players I consider relatively safe bets.

Oh no! Not the Utah Jazz! Not the team that has only missed the playoffs twice in the last 20+ years. Who knows whether this pick will turn out or not but it's definitely not a bad pick since many teams were trying to trade up to pick him up (based on the rumors we were hearing before draft) and the only reason I believe Clev passed on him was because of his buyout, and going into a possible lockout year seems very short sighted to me. The dude basically fell into our lap again.
As far as you go. We don't want you as a fan. So .... have a nice life.

Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
Is it possible that BC finally has learned the concept of a 2-3 year rebuild instead of blowing his load every time he has a scrap of cap space. We will likely be the worst team in the league next year and if we can land the top 1 or 2 picks and possibly score another lotto pick in a strong draft we may be able to actually begin the root process of a great team soon.

From some of the highlights.. He's really good at catch and Dunk, and Alley Oops, and he's got quick hands and quick feet, and he's got some good jump for a 7'. He knows how to go get the ball that's for sure, unlike some other 7 footer we have he actually rebounds...

Untill now, I hadn't realized how quick he is. Not just foot speed, but very quick in making his move, getting to his position. When he gets the ball, he does not wait with it, he's very fast to finish at the rim.

Although I do feel Val is a really good prospect, ( I had him ahead of Kanter)..He's no sure thing. But he definitely has the tools.
I rather have done something similar to what Cho and Charlotte did; acquire assets.
Picking up Kemba and Biyombo ...wow... Both these guys possess character/leadership qualities. Cho is not done yet. I think they'll be just bad enough to earn a high draft pick next year. If Biyombo pans out and they acquire another scorer...they're foundation will be set.
