Coulda gotten Liggins in the second round. Id bet anything he'll be just as good if not better than shumpert. Shoulda gotten either Brooks or Donatas. Even Selby woulda been better imo. Either way whats done is done. He's a knick and I hope I'm wrong about him. We need him to be much better than anyone here expects him to be. He should start by practicing hitting wide open jumpshots.

Historically Walsh hasn't been a big trade on draft day guy. He's convservative in that sense. He's a value guy. He believes in getting the most value for the pick. I don't really put this pick fully on Walsh though. I look at this as a group pick with Walsh's opinion having the most weight...

I'm a North Carolina Basketball Fan and I saw Iman Shumpert quite a bit during his career at Georgia Tech. He ALWAYS played well against us and played really intense defense. He's obviously a physical presence in the backcourt due to his size, but his mentality is a physical one as well. It seemed like he only got up to play big games. He played really well against Duke early in their game last year up at Cameron Indoor and got me thinking what he would be like on our team.

The great thing about Iman is that it seems like he understands fully what he will be expected to do from Day One. His job is to come in and be a defender. He can step into the league as one of the best backcourt defenders in the game. It's nice when you have a player who's basement is Raja Bell or Tony Allen, with a ceiling of a Russell Westbrook due to his freakish athleticism. He has excellent form on his shot, but simply needs more repetition.

Hopefully, he can come in and be a huge help defensively, while improving his other qualities along the way. I've learned through watching the NBA for some time that a jumper is the EASIEST thing to fix in this league, because it is the most rudimentary skill that doesn't necessarily involve athleticism. It's about taking a lot of them and maintaining solid mechanics, much like a baseball swing.

Very excited about having Iman.

Shumpert is already a fine spot up shooter. It's when he has to shoot off the dribble or create a jump shot for himself that he struggles - and at GT he was asked to do that a lot. He's a lot better shooter than people here seem to believe, he took a TON of bad shots at GT in that offense that really hurt his percentages.

They're checkers players trying to evaluate the chess player that is Donnie. They're still trying to figure out who won the Houston trade, while watching Houston fall into the lottery and seeing us jump into the playoffs. Sorry to see Donnie go.

Exactly

It also hurt his development that he had an awful coach in Paul Hewitt. If Shumpert goes to UCLA or Kansas and plays PG for Self or Howland, I don't think we are having this discussion about Iman, because he goes Top 5, just like Westbrook did.

there never was a question about who won the houston trade. anyone thinking otherwise has no grip on reality.

because nobody has ever shot well in a workout to then suck it up on the court. :lol:

for comparison, jared jeffries supposedly shoots well in practice.

Maybe the workout put him over the top...? It's not like he had a poor college career either. He didn't fool us...he's a good pick.

Walsh's choice came down to two defensive guys -- Florida State forward Chris Singleton and Shumpert. Some in the organization felt Singleton was the best player available, but Walsh chose the latter because of position. The Knicks are thin in the backcourt and Shumpert can also defend shooting guards.

"Internally we talked about that a lot," Walsh said of the choice between Singleton and Shumpert. "Fact is, we're going to have more room at the [point guard] position and 2-guard position than the guys we have at the 3 and 4. I know people say [Singleton] can play [against shooting guards] but it's difficult for guys that size."

so instead of picking who we thought was the best player, we picked a guy for need on a team where only 2 guys are guaranteed to be here after this year. what an astute chess player he is.

Last night I was on the fence with the pick. I wasn't mad, but I wasn't happy either. I was hoping with Motie and Brooks still there, we would take one, but after thinking about it I don't mind it. Defense was and still is a HUGE need for us, and while Shumpert doesn't solve our defensive problems, he is a big step in the right direction. Yeah, he's not a good shooter, but there's another guy on our team who was a brick mason when he first came out but with the help of phil weber his shot is wet now. Hopefully Weber can do the same here for Shumpert. If he can, we'll have something special. Whether you love the pick or hate it, the fact is he's a Knick, and in the end that's all that matters.

i tend not to post much in the offseason... prefer to talk about games as opposed to overreacting about front office moves and decisions and speculating about the future despite having no real information... but i digress...

figured id see most of this board killing our pick... nothing new there... i see a lot of people regurgitating draft site info and popular conjecture about shumpert... and very few guys posting real analysis...

so let me throw in my two cents... ive watched a fair amount of shumpert over the last three years... and listen to this guy... he knows what hes talking about...

Those two guys are our 3 and 4 respectively. If you have two guys that you value similarly why not pick for immediate need first and foremost? If for no other reason than that guy gets a showcase for a trade.
